2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)How bad or good are the Orioles? I know we have a very small sampling so far but nobody in the American League east looked like worldbeaters. At least the O's can score runs. That said, CC did impress in his second start.
(john from ct)
The Orioles are moving in the right direction, but they have no chance this year, not in that division. Scoring won't be a problem, but a rotation that leaves the gate with Adam Eaton and Mark Hendrickson is an ugly sight to behold. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-10-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Buchholz pitched about 140 innings between MLB and AAA. How is that a "lost" season? He didn't pitch well with the Sox, but isn't the experience of the year worth something?
(JL from Portland)
It's a lost season in that he was a replacement level pitcher who was basically interchangeable with - Miguel Batista? Mark Hendrickson? Josh Fogg? - somebody like that. A more valuable season could have flipped the AL East standings, perhaps even giving the Sox home field advantage throughout the playoffs, for one thing. For another, it's a reasonable assumption that Buchholz will be a better pitcher about 6 years from now when he costs more money and has leverage on the open market.

That said, the Sox are in the playoffs, his arm is still attached at the shoulder, and the experience of dealing with adversity is a lesson not to be taken lightly. Stuff happens, and he and the Red Sox will hope for better just like Hughes and the Yankees will. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-10-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marlins outlook next year and the year after?
(james from bk)
If they can keep the rotation healthy for once, this is a team that can do some serious damage. Ricky Nolasco is true ace material, and Josh Johnson's pretty damn good himself. If Anibal Sanchez can at least settle in as a #3, the rotation will be an improvement on this year's mess, one that started with Mark Hendrickson involved. Hanley Ramirez improved on his defense, making him even more valuable, and is one of the top players in the game--possibly #2 in overall production next to the peerless Albert Pujols. I like them more for 2009 than I did for 2008, given the problems and injuries in their rotation. That's the key to the whole team. as their lineup is good enough to be carried by a great set of starters. (Marc Normandin)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener Roundtable"bobbob1313 (Miami): With all of the ragging on the Vicente Padilla's of the world going on here, I've got to ask: Off the top of your heads, who is the worst opening day starter you can think of in recent memory? Is there a better (worse?) choice for this than Mark Hendrickson?"

I don't even know if Padilla was the worst opening day starter this year. I think Westbrook may hold the honors there. Or maybe Frank Francisco. (Colin Wyers)

Hendrickson is certainly a good choice (no pun intended), but I distinctly remember one Carl Pavano, post-buttocks injury, taking the ball on Opening Day a couple years back. (Steph Bee)
