YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2015 Henderson burst onto the big-league scene in 2012 with a high-90s fastball and a monster strikeout rate, eventually taking the closer's role. As the 2014 season approached, though, Brewers coaches became concerned when he struggled to touch 94 mph in spring training. The organization attempted to ease him into the season, removing him from the ninth inning and pitching him in low-leverage situations. Finally, after a five-run implosion against the Reds on May 1st, Henderson went inactive with a sore shoulder. The vague diagnosis crystallized later in the year, though: After a setback in his minor-league rehab, he had shoulder surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff in August. Given the prescribed four-month recovery—it was only a cleanup procedure—he should be ready for spring training and another shot at a meaningful bullpen role.
2014 Henderson's fastball (96 mph average velocity) can get him a swinging strike in any count. More importantly, unlike the two-pitch closers Milwaukee has had in the past (think John Axford and Derrick Turnbow), Henderson can throw his slider for a strike almost at will. His 66 percent strike rate was well above the league average. The ability to change speeds in some form is key for a two-pitch reliever, as both Turnbow and Axford discovered when control of their breaking balls (both shaky to begin with) disappeared in their second years as closer. Henderson has that ability, and it should keep him working high-leverage innings for the foreseeable future.
2013 Perhaps the final Expos draftee ever to make his big-league debut, Henderson spent a decade kicking around the bus leagues before last years Milwaukee bullpen implosion finally gave him his shotand unlike, say, Lance Zawadzki or Luke Montz, he may stick around awhile. Like bullpen mate Axford, Henderson is a well-traveled Canuck with a big fastball and spotty control thats caused him to walk nearly five batters per nine innings in the high minors. When he commands his fastball and can throw his sharp-breaking slider anywhere near the strike zone, as he did last year, he can punch out batters at a breathtaking rate. That should be enough to earn him a set-up job, though his ability to keep it will depend on his ability to avoid ball four.

2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)In a league that counts holds, do you have any sleeper picks for non-closer relievers?
(Ron Kettle from Chicago)
Don't know if he's a sleeper anymore because George keeps talking about him but Liam Hendriks. I like Jim Henderson on the Mets if he's healthy. He has looked great this spring and was solid that one year with the Brewers before he got hurt. (Mike Gianella)
2016-02-25 12:00:00 (link to chat)Any hope that Jeff Walters amounts to anything as a major league reliever? I have a sliver of a hope he still has nearly elite relief upside.
(Gigi from Jackson Heights)
Let's do some very fringy Mets dudes.

I don't know that Walters ever had "elite" relief upside. His 2013 in Bingo, he was 92-95 with an average slider. That isn't nothing, but it isn't that uncommon in Double-A pens. I saw him on rehab and the velocity wasn't quite all the way back, but the command looked okay. He is also 28 now. I think he pitches in the majors this year, because there is always relief arm attrition and he's on the 40, but I also wouldn't be surprised if his 40 spot goes to Jim Henderson or someone like that on 3/31. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2014-04-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is it time to say goodbye to Moose Tacos. I have him as Donaldson insurance in a 14 team points league. Should i drop him for Blackmon or Jim Henderson? My OF are Puig Martin and Aoki. My RP are Jim Johnson Chavez and Benoit Cody Allen and Daniel Webb also available
(John Candelaria from Altoona)
Yeah you know, I think it's time to say goodbye to Moustakas. If all the guys getting saves are gone I'd probably add an offensive contributor in front of guys like Allen Henderson and Webb. Blackmon is an interesting name but dig a bit deeper and see what's up. (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-04-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)So, who do you have finishing the season with the most saves for the Cubs, Cards and Brewers? thanks
(Kevin from Boston)
For the Cubs, I would have to guess Kyuji Fujikawa. Carlos Marmol might get the job again, but he would probably be put in there to showcase him for a trade. Trevor Rosenthal isn't the closer now in St. Louis, but Mitchell Boggs has already struggled so if I'm going to guess, I'm going to guess the guy with the skills and the stuff. Milwaukee is a mystery to me. I thought John Axford would lose the job but had no idea it would happen so quickly. I would guess Jim Henderson, but he has some of the same control/command issues that Ax does/did. My sleeper in this pen is Brandon Kintzler, but I don't see Kintzler as having a path to the job at the moment. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)I'm concerned about the Brewers bullpen. Do you see any improvement from 2012, and, if Axford is as awful as he was last year, who might replace him?
(MJSilverman from Calistoga, CA)
I see improvement for all bullpens that were below average last year, and the opposite of improvement for all bullpens that were above average last year. I find myself getting a bit dogmatic on this point.

Axford's so-so. Probably keeps the job all year, but he's not one of those rare relievers who I trust. Every day I learn how secretly awesome some scrub reliever was last year, and today that scrub reliever is Jim Henderson. Jim Henderson might replace him. (Sam Miller)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Given the volatility of the closers role in baseball, are there a few players you feel may emerge as dark horses during season or maybe even during upcoming spring training? I have seen the cubs fujikawa and a few names in Houston thrown around. Any others you feel may become somewhat relevant or just like in general granted some current closers fail? Thanks Jason!
(joe from CA)
Gregerson, Rex Brothers, Brandon Lyon, Jim Henderson, Al Alburquerquequequque (Jason Collette)
