YearComment
2016 The Phillies were Harang's seventh team in the last six years, and he was brought on for the explicit purpose of taking his turn every fifth day while the club developed and otherwise looked to acquire heirs apparent for the rotation. For a time, it seemed the club might even be able to flip the journeyman at or before the deadline—a 2.02 ERA and 53 strikeouts to 15 walks through May sure seemed like it would be mighty appetizing—but Harang began to combust in June. Over his last 18 starts of the year, Harang posted a 6.86 ERA and allowed his opponents to brand a gruesome .932 OPS on his file in 467 plate appearances. A July DL stint for a bout of plantar fasciitis allowed him enough rest to finish out the season, just not enough to finish it strongly. He's nearing the end of a career that has now spanned 14 seasons, and he's not going to be able to be choosy about the short supply of major-league offers he's likely to receive from here on out, assuming he hasn't retired by the time you read this.
2015 "We thought he would get better, and, frankly, with the injuries we were desperate and he was the best and easiest guy to get. We got lucky," Braves assistant GM John Coppolella told us in April, after Harang had raced out to a majors-best 0.85 ERA through five starts. You know what comes next: Yes, he pitched worse from that point forward. But not that much worse. Harang recorded a career-best quality-start rate and his raw numbers, though respectable enough, would've been better were it not for a few bloody encounters with those pesky Marlins. (Insert your Old Man and the Sea jokes here.) Harang didn't necessarily reinvent himself with a better pitch or tightened mechanics, but he did reestablish that he's a tolerable back-of-the-rotation option, albeit one nobody had cared to throw a bunch of money at as this book went out the door.
2014 Exiled from the Dodgers eight-man spring rotation, traded by the Rockies without so much as an appearance, cut from a Mariners team that let Joe Saunders throw a beanbag underhand for 32 startsand finally, the indignity of four not-half-bad outings for the 2013 Mets. Harang became more sinker/slider-dominant in 2013 than in previous years, likely just going with whatever keeps him competent enough to stay employed. And hell likely stay employed, somewhere; he hasnt lost a tick of velocity in two years, even if hes gained a few ticks on the scale. Wherever he is, he may want to keep his bags packed.
2013 A season pitching for the Padres in spacious Petco Park helped paint Harang's comeback from forearm and back woes in the most flattering light, so he figured to be one of the riskier bets among Colletti's backloaded two-year deals. Like Capuano, Harang survived the season intact, with his highest totals of innings and starts since 2007. More often than not, he kept the Dodgers in the game, partly because he got very lucky in the home-run department, with a 6.3 percent home-run-to-fly-ball rate, well below his Petco and career marks (9.3 and 10.3 percent, respectively). With a whole lot of regression on his horizon, his salary jumps from $3 million to $7 million in 2013, with a $2 million buyout on a $7 million option as well, meaning that he'll be tougher to move than Capuano should the Dodgers stock their rotation more fully.
2012 Harang hasn't been the same since his 2008 forearm strain, but he joined a long line of down-on-their-luck veteran starters trying to rebuild value in Petco Park. Despite missing a few starts in June due to an injured right foot, the local product accomplished his mission by taking full advantage of the big ballpark. Batters hit .240/.304/.380 against him in Petco, .317/.374/.504 on the road, a red flag that didn't stop Colletti from signing him to a two-year, $12 million deal$3 million in 2012, $7 million in 2013with a vesting option for 2014 that can be bought out for $2 million. The next Dodger GM may as well cut that check as soon as Colletti cleans out his office.
2011 Pitchers have limited shelf lives, and the problem with talking up an underappreciated one is that hes liable to be a lot less special by the time people come around. Such has been the case with Harang, who labored in virtual obscurity as the Reds durable, late-blooming ace from 2005-2007, but seems to have buckled under the combined strains of advancing age and heavy workloads in the seasons since. Last year, the big righty posted his lowest innings total and strikeout rate since 2003, and walked batters at a career-high clip. He isnt throwing any softer than he did in his prime (not that he ever threw hard), but hes getting less movement on his pitches, and coming up lame with a myriad of physical complaints. Harangs season ended on a low note, as batters teed off on his offerings to the tune of a .396/.492/.585 line following his return from a back injury at the end of August. Harang signed in his native San Diego in Decemberhe will attempt to resuscitate his career in a park built for just that purpose.
2010 If Harangs 2008 season was a disaster marred by bad luck and bad decisions (specifically, a 63-pitch relief outing on two days' rest that derailed him for nearly three months), his 2009 was just a bummer. Harang was hit harder in 2009, and more of those balls in play fell in for hits. He was unable to establish any start-to-start consistency, and after he strung three solid outings together in August, he was struck with appendicitis and had to undergo a season-ending appendectomy. Approaching his 32nd birthday, its clear that hes not a late-blooming ace after all, just a solid, mid-rotation starter in need of some better luck.
2009 Whenever a guy gets labeled as having a rubber arm, the designation is temporaryeventually, even rubber dries up and snaps. In the case of the Reds' workhorse, some regard the four-inning relief appearance Harang made on May 25working on two days' restas the breaking point. Prior to the relief appearance, Harang was having a fairly normal year, with a 3.50 ERA. In the eight starts that followed, his ERA was more than double that; afterward the big righty spent a month on the disabled list with "forearm stiffness." Although Harang was effective in September and seemed to be pitching at full velocity in his last two starts, forearm stiffness often graduates to elbow pain. Buyer beware.
2008 Harang stands out on the Reds' pitching staff like a stripper at a James Dobson rally-the one attractive option in a big homely pile of hurlers. Harang's hardly a looker, but winning 16 games for one of the worst teams in baseball is an accomplishment, and he's managed to maintain excellent peripherals to go with those impressive win totals. A late-bloomer on a bad team, he's managed to avoid attention, but he's an ideal anchor to build a young rotation around.
2007 While Arroyo got the headlines, the completion of Harang`s slow development into a quality starter was equally satisfying; credit former Assistant GM Brad Kullman with landing Harang as the prize in the Jose Guillen deal of 2003. Harang had already taken a big step forward in 2005, but he showed improved command of his five-pitch arsenal in 2006. One of the penalties of becoming a trustworthy workhorse on a team with a bad pen is that you`re asked to go deep into games, and the fatigue showed. Harang took 24 quality starts through six innings, which would have put him among the league leaders, but blew nine of them after that point by pushing his earned run total past three. Four of those blown quality starts came in September. In his other two starts that month, he held his opponents to four total runs in a pair of complete-game wins.
2006 Harang survived the nine-car pile-up that was the Reds rotation in 2005 quite nicely, blossoming into a solid starter despite his average stuff across the board (two-seamer, four-seamer, cutter, slider, split). His ERA and record were much better in the second half, but that seems flukish, as his other stats were worse. Better command of his sinker resulted in more dead worms and fewer gopher balls. While he`s not going to get any better, Harang should be a solid third man in a big league rotation for years to come.
2005 Check his game log. Harang was miserable through his first 11 starts, tossing up a 5.43 ERA, with ugly peripheral stats. When the Reds diagnosed a sore elbow and placed him on the DL, you had to expect the worst. But then Harang came back strong, yielding just one run in his first three starts back, racking up 21 strikeouts in 18.2 innings and showing vastly improved command. Harang's last few starts were erratic, but the Reds are optimistic that some of his post-injury goodness could carry forward. Even so, he'll need to cure that gopheritis (a homer every 6 IP last year) to succeed.
2004 A fourth starter picked up from the As for Jose Guillen, Harang doesn't throw that hard for a big guy. He works up in othe zone, which got him into trouble last year with long balls, something that's not likely to go away. Harang needs a big outfield patrolled by gazelles; he'll have neither in Cincinnati, so his success will depend on his walking almost no one.
2003 Yes, the As grabbing pitching from Texas. Harangs filled in nicely as a #5 starter, and with the trade of Cory Lidle, hell get a crack at the rotation again. Hes got a decent, slightly straight fastball, but hes really more of a work-the-strike-zone guy than an overpowering guy, despite his enormous 6'6" frame. But hey, angles are angles. Harangs going to have to pitch well to hold off Harden.
2002 The A's going to the Rangers for pitching talent is a little bit like Paul Allen mugging a homeless guy. Who can't see. Or move. Harang pitched remarkably well in Midland and should spend this season in Sacramento. His repertoire isn't filled with amazing stuff, but he has good command of his pitches, changes speeds well, and scouts like his compact delivery. If he had been in Texas last season, he might well have ended up in Arlington for eight or ten gruesome starts.
2001 Aaron Harang pitched well at Charlotte but faces an uphill battle to have a major-league career. His stuff is average, with control that's pretty decent but not exactly Bob Tewksbury. Harang is worth keeping an eye on in Double-A. If his strikeout rate jumps, his chance of having a major-league career triples. He was sent to Oakland for Randy Velarde.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2015-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)You are the president of baseball ops and have 5m to spend. Where do you see the biggest bang for your buck? Pay all your minor league players a living wage so they can eat real food, sign Aaron Harang, buy a few Crays, or have a bobblehead night for your radio only announcer? For the life of me I can't figure out why the relative paltry sum isn't invested in minor league pay to help them focus on baseball instead of, you know, surviving.
(brentdaily from colorado)
I'd invest in tracking systems (installed and portable), nutrition (MiLB and MLB) and I could use a new flat screen TV, too. (Harry Pavlidis)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)Reading about MiLB players and some of the odd jobs they take in the off-season it struck me that there is an incredible risk of injury in most (e.g. construction). Given the game is awash in money why is it that teams aren't throwing an extra $25k per player (on average) in the minors in order to allow them to eat better, work out, and not operate heavy machinery? In the end it's an extra $5M that would go much further than signing Aaron Harang. What am I missing?
(sir nerdlington from the nerd box)
You'll have to ask the owners this because I never understood why they'd let their million dollar investments eat like trash. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)How much more of a leash does Aaron Harang have? What would you do with Harang in a 10-team dynasty League?
(Dave from Canada)
Don't keep Aaron Harang on a leash. People will stare. (Bret Sayre)
2014-04-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Help! My AL-only team has six players on the DL (Parker, Fister, Willingham, Profar, Izturis, and Pryor), two others nursing hammys (Hardy, Eaton), and a reliever sent down to AAA (Feliz). I can't convince anyone to part with an extra infielder for picks, so I'm stuck relying on the supplemental draft this week. Two picks. I plan on taking an IF and pitcher. Is Yangervis Solarte for real? Should I take him? The alternatives are Roberts, Goins, Flaherty, Sogard, and Wilson. How about Betances? Or should I go for a more stolid Colby Lewis, Aaron Harang or Chris Capuano?
(touchstoneQu from Erie, PA)
The best part about Scoresheet is that you dont have to answer the question of whether Yangervis Solarte is for real. When looking for playing time, your more pressing concern is whether the Yankees think hes for real, and thats likely been answered in the affirmative. We discussed this in the pod, but Solarte should be good for a little pop and some flexibility at both second and third. Sogard would be next, but maybe we just want to overturn that #FaceofMLB fiasco. As for pitchers, stolidness rules the day. We lean towards Lewis or the surprisingly resilient Harang. Betances is enticing, but if youre in the hunt, you can probably get top shelf relief from a non-contender later in the season. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)Is Aaron Harang worth picking up?
(Lona Misa from The Projects)
Depends on league depth. Inside of 18-20+ team leagues, I can't imagine so. Let's see more before deciding. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Erasmo Ramirez... seemed like your boy, but can't beat out Blake Beaven or Aaron Harang for a rotation spot. Droppable? If hes as hurt as claimed, might he be passed by Hultzen or Walker for the second half
(Hugh Jazz from Backside, LA)
Well ya kinda answered the question there. It wasn't that he couldn't beat those guys out, rather that he was hurt. He hasn't pitched yet. Reserve roster AL-only or deep mixed, hang on; otherwise go ahead & move on. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Aaron Harang in Seattle worth a flier pickup?
(TobyL from Victorville)
I think the Mariners should have moved their fences out instead of in. Out to like Vancouver. Maybe some visa issues with that but as close as possible. Then sure, grab Harang, grab Kazmir, grab anyone the Orioles are releasing that week, and go to town! (Matthew Kory)
2013-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Daniel, thanks for the chat. As the rumor guru, what is the biggest deal you think might happen before opening day? Conversely, what is the deal you would most like to see happen?
(LoyalRoyal from Tourney town)
I don't think we'll get any blockbusters over the next 10 days, but I could see the Cubs finding a taker for Carlos Marmol or the Dodgers unloading Ted Lilly or Aaron Harang. I would like to see the Rangers find a way to trade for an established starter, given that they have the prospect depth to do it, but I'm not sure that either Harang or Lilly would offer a material upgrade over their internal options. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-02-23 11:00:00 (link to chat)Where do you fall on the fence debate concerning Petco Park and do you think the Padres have done an adequate job in utilizing the park's spaciousness as an advantage?
(Venzor from North Park)
You could say I'm [removes shades] on the fence. But seriously, I think the team should be extremely careful in modifying the dimensions. The law of unintended consequences can be a cruel mistress. As for utilizing the park to their advantage, the Padres have been hit or miss. Having athletic outfielders like Maybin and Venable is good. Right-handed power hitters are useful if they aren't Ryan Ludwick. And the team has done a good job bringing in pitchers (Kevin Correia, Jon Garland, Aaron Harang) who look better than they are thanks to the park. Volquez could be another one of those. (Geoff Young)
2011-09-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Both small in stature, large in talent. Who do you like more? Martin Perez pitching at the Ballpark in Arlington or Robbie Erlin pitching at Petco?
(Trey from Frisco TX)
Perez is probably still the better pitcher, though his prospect luster is a little less, well, lustrous these days than it has been in the past. From an un-park-adjusted perspective, though (read: fantasy), I like Erlin better. A talented flyball guy pitching in the park that made Aaron Harang fantasy-relevant again? Yes, please. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Any chance the Reds' AAA affiliate could beat the Pirates in a 7 game series? They're trotting out a lineup of Dave Sappelt, Chris Valaika, Yonder Alonso, Todd Frazier, Juan Francisco, Danny Dorn, and Devin Mesoraco, with Sam LeCure, Matt Maloney, Aaron Harang, and Aroldis Chapman among their pitchers.
(Joe from Cincy)
I was going to rip you and talk about how massive the different is between Triple-A and the big leagues is, but they might have a chance. I'll still favor the Pirates though. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-04-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Aaron Harang turn it around and who would Chapman replace if the Red's call him up?
(Denverbengal from Denver)
I don't think so and probably Leake if he continues to struggle with his control. Dusty Baker hates walks in all their forms. (Will Carroll)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Aaron Harang produce anything close to his 06'-07' value this year?
(Ken from Pittsburgh)
I think that ship has sailed. He was doing well last year, outside of his record. More of that is in the cards. (Marc Normandin)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)I claim the Indians must add a league-average or better starter or 2010 will be a completely wasted season: what would it take to talk Capt. Walt out of Aaron Harang? Failing that, who could Cleveland reasonably target? A Westbrook, Laffey, Carmona, Huff, Sowers/Masterson rotation depends far too much on unrealistic hope.
(buffum from Austin TX)
The Reds think they're in it next year, so I'd go elsewhere for your shopping needs. As is, I think you're already stuck with 'unrealistic hope' being the defining theme of this winter for the Indians. Not that they need to blast down to bedrock, but next year's more likely to be about seeing if you can sneak into third place ahead of whichever one of the Sox, Twins, and Tigers falls down. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)What would it take to get Aaron Harang from the Reds? I'm wondering if their desire to shed salary and his misleading numbers might make them likely to unload him. Their catchers and shortstop were horrific this season: could the Indians craft a package with Kelly Shoppach, Jhonny Peralta, and a pitching prospect not named Hector or Nick, or would the Reds be looking for a pure prospect package?
(buffum from Austin TX)
Do they have a desire to shed salary? They're not paying that many people as is. I can't see your offer getting it done, even granting your premise. That's a terrible deal. You'd have to do it with real prospects. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Aaron Harang - what do you see being the reason for his struggles in '08, and will he be past them in '09?
(ericmilburn from San Francisco)
Overwork. Ask Dusty. (Will Carroll)
2008-11-24 15:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Micah Owings? Can he get back to the pitcher he was in 2007? As a Reds fan, I like him. His minor league numbers compare favorably to Aaron Harang's.
(Brandon from Charleston)
Harang is an interesting comp, because he struggled through his first couple of seasons and didn't break through until his age-27 season in 2005. With Owings, however, there just isn't all that much data to go on--he only threw 200 innings in the minors (Harang threw over 500). I'm not all that high on Owings, and you have to be concerned about the shoulder issues, but I think he can be a solid No. 4 starter. With his bat, that has a good deal of value. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)Do you expect Aaron Harang to return to his normal 2005-2007 form next season?
(smitty25039 from Charleston)
As much as I wish I could be optimistic because Harang's fun to watch when he's on, the Gap's no friend to pitching, and playing for Dusty Baker hardly helps matters any. (Christina Kahrl)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableHappy Opening Day. I got onto MLB.tv just in time to see Albert Pujols launch a solo homer off Aaron Harang in Cincy. If that doesn't say BASEBALL IS HERE I don't know what will. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-06-09 14:30:002009 Draft Coverage"Jason (DC): Assuming he gets healthy, how does Gibson compare to Aaron Harang?"

Completely different type of body, is what jumps out to me. Gibson is tall and skinny, and very projectable. Harang is well ... not skinny. I would think Gibson's slider should be better, and Gibson should be a bit less of a flyball pitcher. I gotta think there's a better comparison available. (Bryan Smith)
