2013 Greene may be a replacement-level player so far in his career, but he's the sort of 0-WARP guy who can help a team, even if his power barrage with Houston shouldn't be expected again. He has played almost nowhere but shortstop in the minors, so being used as a utilityman in the majors has hurt his fielding metrics. And while he won't ever be confused with fellow Georgia Tech alumnus Nomar Garciaparra against left-handed pitching, he's not an automatic out. He'll never have the on-base or righty-hitting skills to warrant a bigger role, but as an average-fielding shortstop with a little pop who can hit one hand of pitcher, he can be a cog in the machinery of a good team.
2012 For the third year in a row, Greene spent the season shuttling between Triple-A and the big leagues, solidifying the suspicion that at 27, what you see with him is what you get. He’s a passable reserve at second base and shortstop who can even play the outfield in a pinch. But his offensive skills have never translated to the majors, and the former first-rounder appears destined for a career in a utility role.
2011 Injuries and a hacktastic approach have kept Greene from employing the tools that made him a first-round pick back in 2005, and his prospect clock isn’t approaching midnight—it’s ticked past into the wee hours. Greene has always had the power, speed, and strong arm to grow into an above-average shortstop, but he’s become a soufflé that didn’t rise. He hasn't hit during his brief auditions with the big club, and since his defense isn't eye-opening the Cardinals' lids are growing heavy where he's concerned.
2010 It's worth wondering if the future will ever arrive for the former first-rounder. He has some power and some speed, hard work on his approach has yielded slightly better patience, and he has the range and arm for short. He's still hack-happy, however, and on a team where so many guys caught breaks that translated into jobs, somebody had to be left out. Even the utility role was filled with the acquisition of Julio Lugo. Greene is error-prone at short, which won't help, but put in a smaller park he could start for someone and have his moments.
2009 Tyler Greene put up almost exactly the same OBP and SLG at Double-A last year as he did in 2007, and the 2005 first-rounder isn't even the best bit of Greene-ry at short after the acquisition of Khalil.
2008 Knee problems hampered 2005 first-rounder Tyler Greene last year, and he underwent season-ending surgery in July. That won't help his unimpressive work at shortstop
2007 Greene fished his 2005 debut in the Florida State League, where he played well, and he returned there for his full-season debut last year. Things started off poorly and stayed that way; he was striking out a ton and making an error every three games. In June, Greene was shipped down to the Midwest League and found it more to his liking. The power he showed in college returned, and he got back into the prospect groove. The ship has been righted, for now, but the stormy weather of Florida is calling once again. Greene will still have to prove himself at the higher level.
2006 Polished high draft pick with a shine on him in the eyes of the front office. Given the state of shortstop play in the National League, Greene could be up fairly quickly. Even if he`s not the next Alex Rodriguez, he could perform well enough for the Cardinals to get a leg up on their competition. He could also be trade bait, if Jocketty`s track record is any indication.
