BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 To appreciate how bad the Padres offense was in 2011, consider that Gonzalez finished third (behind Will Venable and team leader Orlando Hudson) in RBIs with two out and runners in scoring position. Defensively, Gonzalez has the range, hands, and arm to play anywhere on the infield. That said, Ron Washington would be well advised to avoid a repeat of a September 23 contest against the Dodgers, in which Bud Black started Gonzalez at first base.
2011 It's too easy to describe the Attorney General's at-bats as torture, but happily Riggleman kept him safely reserved for defensive-replacement duties and double-switches last year, generally to get Cristian Guzman off the field. Along with Wil Nieves, he's on the short list for least dangerous bench bats available in the free world, ahead of most pitchers, hitting coaches, and a few zombies. You need that projection about as much as you need scabies, which would have a similar effect on your fantasy team.
2010 Peruse the 2009 numbers produced by the Attorney General at your peril, as they have been known to cause nausea, headaches, and an extreme feeling of sympathy for both the player who suffered through such a difficult season, and the fans forced to witness it. Uncharacteristically bad defense, poor baserunning, and a pestilential .228/.262/.281 line against right-handed pitching led to the National League's lowest WARP. Gonzalez isnít quite as bad as all that, and his glove at least should bounce back, but the arrival of Ian Desmond and a front office keen on adding another veteran infielder should preclude him from anything but a token role on the 2010 club. In layman's terms, this is referred to as progress.
2009 Picked up in an easily overlooked deadline deal with the Yankees in exchange for pitcher Jhonny Nunez, Gonzalez is the shortstop version of Emilio Bonifacio, picked up a week earlier in another trade for a pitcher. He's a slick fielder with a bat as soft as his hands. Call him Guzman insurance, expect him to spend the next year in Syracuse, and get on with your life.
2008 Alberto Gonzalez, the shortstop that some have nicknamed "The Attorney General," began the year at Triple-A, but headed back down a level for a refresher on the strike zone before his September call-up. His glove will inspire someone to give him a shot at some point. His bat is off of the Rey Sanchez shelf-better than Tony Pe?a Jr.'s, but that's all.
2007 Venezuelan Alberto Gonzalez is an especially slick fielder who skipped a level and didn`t get blown away by Double-A, though his bat is still nothing special. He went to the Yankees in the Big Unit deal. Perhaps in a year or two he`ll be able to pry Miguel Cairo`s cold, dead hands off of the utility infield job.
