2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 In 2008, just after going undrafted out of the University of Buffalo, Geltz signed with the Angels and joined their rookie-ball team in Arizona. Check his player page online and you’ll see Geltz’s SO9: 27.0. Sure, it was only 2 1/3 innings, but in the slow climb from undrafted free agent to the majors, Geltz has always struck batters out: 12.3 per nine in short-season ball, 11.3 in High-A, 13.9 in Double-A. He’s a short righty, so instead of hopelessly trying to achieve downhill plane, he throws almost uphill, giving his four-seam fastball “rise.” That trajectory also makes him one of the most extreme fly-ball pitchers in the sport, and Geltz will allow more home runs than a high-leverage reliever should. His first half, in Arkansas, was the best stretch of his career; his second half, in Salt Lake, was the worst.
2012 Steven Geltz has struck out 103 batters in 65 Double-A innings, primarily using a low-90s fastball with a ton of movement. Always root for undrafted free agents.
2011 Not to be confused with 1980s futility infielder Steve Jeltz, Steven Geltz is an undersized reliever who has improved with each promotion. His violent delivery constrains his control, but results in enough strikeouts that he will earn a major-league look, perhaps as early as this season.
