BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Brian Fuentes struggled mightily in the Oakland and St. Louis bullpens last year, and the long-time closer decided to retire in order to spend more time with his family; while there’s certainly no reason to question the motivation behind his admirable decision, it’s rare indeed to find a player who does this when they’re not struggling mightily.
2012 Fuentes used to be considered one of the better closers in the game, selected to four All-Star Games in a five-year window for the Colorado Rockies and later for the Angels of Anaheim. But his stuff has slowly declined, and despite solid (not spectacular) production for Oakland in 2011, the second-tier closer candidate didn’t live up to his $5M price tag. That money could have been better allocated. With another $5M paycheck coming Fuentes's way in 2012, Oakland hopes he provides production better than just-slightly-better-than-replacement-level.
2011 Fuentes was all but untouchable after the Twins acquired him from the Angels late last August, but Minnesota declined his $9-million club option for this season with the expectation that erstwhile closer Joe Nathan would reassume the role. With another past and potential closer on the roster in Matt Capps, Minnesota is well-stocked at the end of the bullpen. Fuentes isn't a classic closer, since his fastball rarely breaks 90 mph, but he spots it well and complements it with a good changeup. He also has a track record of finishing games, with four 30-save seasons to his name, which should help him get another chance to close somewhere.
2010 In reclaiming the Rockies' closer job in 2008, Fuentes set career bests for ERA, strikeouts, and homer rate, so moving to a more pitcher-friendly park via his two-year, $17.5 million deal certainly didn't figure to hurt his cause. While he did lead the majors in saves, Fuentes put the lie to the value of that stat by finishing just 20th in the AL in WXRL. His fastball velocity decreased after spiking in 2008; his strikeout rate fell by 57 percent, and righties punished him at a .261/.358/.428 clip, up from .211/.290/.306 the year before. The Angels might want to mind his workload in 2010, as Fuentes has a $9 million option for 2011 that's based upon finishing 55 games, two fewer than he finished last year.
2009 Fuentes saved his best for last, saving 30 of Colorado's 74 wins and putting up career highs in several categories just in time for free agency. He doesn't have classic closer stuff, but his 91-94 mph fastball features both deception and a lot of movement, while his slider is outstanding at times. He was absolutely dominant away from Coors last year, allowing just 14 hits in 29 1/3 innings with a 1.84 ERA, and he could end up as one of the better bargains on the free agent market.
2008 Ten days in June put a damper on Fuentes' season, as he allowed half of the runs he would allow all season over five appearances from June 22 through July 1. Whether pitching through an injury-he pitched just one more inning before hitting the DL on July 13 with a strained left lat muscle-or just having a bad stretch, Fuentes blew four straight saves and allowed 13 runs, 10 hits, and three walks in just 3 1/3 innings, losing the closer job to Manny Corpas in the process. Before that he was awesome-1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 innings-and as the primary set-up man after his mid-August return he was just as good: 1.52 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. He'll remain in that set-up role in 2008 and deliver more of the same.
2007 The first Rockies closer with two 30-save seasons, Fuentes uses his slider on the outer half of the plate with devastating effect on left-handed hitters (.186/.250/.390) and locates his fastball and changeup against right-handers (.217/.317/.367) in combination with a deceptive motion and release. Despite a climbing home run rate, he should be equally effective in his third year as the team`s closer.
2006 One of the few pitchers who appears to have figured out how to pitch in Coors, Fuentes now owns a 3.71 ERA at altitude. Finally made the closer, he started to get a little of the recognition he deserves for one of the more amazing feats of pitching in the last decade. The Rockies are talking about locking him into a multi-year deal, which sounds like a good idea until you remember that relievers are often interchangeable.
2005 He doubled his ERA from 2003 to 2004, but that's more a function of luck switching from good to bad than his underlying performance changing much. A strained back muscle that knocked him out for several weeks didn't help, and the Rockies will monitor his condition closely this season. It'll be interesting to see if the real Fuentes is the specialist who fared 258 OPS points better against lefties than righties in '04 or the balanced pitcher of '03.
2003 Improbably, Fuentes cut his walks when he got called up, posting a 25:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio at Coors, with a 3.31 ERA. Over his last 16 innings he struck out 22 and walked only 3. Alongside Darensbourg, he gives the Rockies a nifty pair of lefties in the pen, arguably among the best in the league.
2002 His delivery—a quick, short-motion, side-arm sling—produces heat in the 90s and makes him murder on left-handed hitters. Jeff Bower calls Fuentes "Mike Venafro with better stuff." If rosters do expand to 27 players, you’ll never be able to get Fuentes out of a uniform. He was traded to the Rockies as part of the Cirillo package.
2001 It doesn’t take a degree in Nadi Astrology to forecast Brian Fuentes’s ultimate destination. He isn’t conservative enough with his pitches to be a starter, and his unorthodox delivery makes him especially tough on left-handed batters (.216/.289/.328), so he’s fated to become a lefty specialist. Until Fuentes slices his walk rate, however, Kullaya Swamy sees the color red in his future: Trailways red.
1998 Fuentes has overpowering stuff and a supposedly amazing move to first base. Hopefully for Seattle fans, AL umpires won’t escape the spell Andy Pettitte’s cast on them and suddenly starting calling balks. If his walks drop even a little, he’s a grade A prospect, as much as a pitcher can be. My favorite Mariner pitching prospect.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)The A's just signed Grant Balfour and now are apparently targeting Brian Fuentes. All this on top of the signings of Rich Harden and Brandon McCarthy. Obviously a lot of injury risk, but do you see the A's looking to move one of their relievers in a package for another bat?
(Tom from Madison)
Someone is going to have to go somewhere if they keep doing this, but I'm just not sure who they are going to move. It was smart of them to wait until the market died down a little though. You know a reliever is going to get hurt in the spring or a team won't have as many quality options as they thought they did. (Marc Normandin)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is the Tiger's payroll so high that their name isn't even surfacing on Brian Fuentes? His price seems to be falling, and would see the Tigers as desperate for a closer.
(LyleCox from Cleveland)
Skip closers, the Tigers should be desperate for relief help in general, and one high-profile signing by itself doesn't fix the pen. If anything, they're better off penciling in Zumaya as the guy who gets the most save opportunities, accepting that they have a bit of lefty help already in hand, and could use a power right-hander. I'd rather see them chasing Juan Cruz. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Quick follow-up: do you think Fuentes would be less of a risk, even though he's about several years older than K-Rod, because he'll likely want a shorter-term deal (i.e., four years or under)?
(wrightfan5 from New York, New York, Big City of Dreams)
Does anyone really think Brian Fuentes is worth $10m a year, even for one year? Really? (Will Carroll)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)Who is a better bet to get traded: Brian Fuentes or George Sherill?
(Robin Quivers from NYC)
I'm guessing both stay right where they're at. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-30 12:30:00 (link to chat)What, in your view, is Brian Fuentes actually WORTH in a trade? Not what (if anything) the Rockies will get for him, but what comprises a deal that's "fair" -- whatever that means.
(Bill from New Mexico)
I would say a good upper-level prospect. (John Perrotto)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)If the Rays are looking to add a reliever, why would they deal Dan Wheeler, who has been one of their best relievers?
(Tommy from Outsperswing)
It's a value equation. "Cardiac Dan" has been supplanted as an 8th inning guy/CIW by Grant Balfour, but has good numbers and is seen by the league as a premium setup guy. That has a pretty big value, considering someone like Brian Fuentes would cost a David Price to acquire. If you can trade Wheeler, get a RH bat, and plug in one of the available guys or even Price in September, shouldn't they consider it? (Will Carroll)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Would it really take David Price to get Brian Fuentes? Fuentes must be better than I thought.
(Stephen from Louisville)
That's what O'Dowd asked for. (Will Carroll)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina! Do you think that Brian Fuentes will end up in another uniform on July 31st? If yes, do you think that the Rockies will have made a good deal?
(PJ from Montréal)
Hi PJ... yes, but perhaps not as much as you might wish for if you're a Rockies fan. He'll be a free agent at season's end, after all, and while keeping him via arbitration would be great for the acquirer, it's more likely he'll leave for free agency and get a multi-year deal. So the team getting Fuentes is looking at two months with him plus a draft pick. It could turn out well if O'Dowd plays bidders off against one another, especially with this being another seller's market, but that's not guaranteed. (Christina Kahrl)
