BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)How do I value Addison Reed if I just started a dynasty rebuild? I know closers should be the first thing to go in a rebuild, but I can't help but believe he's relatively stable and likely to help me when I compete again in 2-3 years. Thanks
(JoeTinker from Chicago)
Here is a list of all closers who recorded 25 or more saves in 2010: Brian Wilson (48), Heath Bell (47), Rafael Soriano (45), Joakim Soria (43), Matt Capps (42), Neftali Feliz (40), Francisco Cordero (40), Carlos Marmol (38), Billy Wagner (37), Jonathan Papelbon (37), Kevin Gregg (37), Mariano Rivera (33), David Aardsma (31), Juan Oviedo (30), Bobby Jenks (27), Ryan Franklin (27), Brad Lidge (27), Jose Valverde (26), Francisco Rodriguez (25) and Andrew Bailey (25). (Bret Sayre)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)Rumors are emerging from St. Louis media that Ryan Franklin may not be long for the Cardinals' roster. Got anything on that? If the rumors are wrong and they're intent on holding onto him, why? He's clearly cooked.
(Bill from New Mexico)
I think he's on the way out in St. Louis. (John Perrotto)
2010-07-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ken, The Mets have lost three road games in the last five days in their opponents' last at-bat, while K-Rod only got work in mop-up duty on Saturday in a 6-1 win. Manuel says he's not wavering from his belief in the "no closer in tie games on the road" mentality, but we're falling out of wild card race on the backs of Ollie Perez and Fernando Nieve. What did we do to deserve this?
(Dan from Brooklyn)
While last night, as an example, TLR let Ryan Franklin work the 9th and 10th on the road in a tie game. And hey presto, they won! Meanwhile, Carlos Marmol pitched only the 9th and gave way to the immortal Brian Schlitter (whose one-line comment in the 2009 BP Annual is one of my all-time faves), who worked two innings and took the loss. I hate, just hate, stuff like that.

What did you do to deserve this? You chose the wrong hometown team to root for, I guess (something I, too, am guilty of). (Ken Funck)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you do with Ryan Franklin this year if you have him in a keeper league (and no reason not to keep him)? Try to trade him? Ride him? Cut him anyway?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Trade! Trade him! (Marc Normandin)
2010-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Sure, but what is Ryan Franklin worth in trade in a dynasty league? A couple of curly fries?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Mmm...curly fries. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Of the six divisions, is there a safer pick than the Cardinals winning the NL Central?
(Steve from St Louis)
I'm not even sure that one is so safe. PECOTA certainly isn't convinced, projecting them at 84 wins currently. I think they'll be lucky to get one full-time rotation spot out of Penny and Lohse, and I'm skeptical that Ryan Franklin is all that. I'd still call them the favorites, but I'm not going to hand out my Locks of the Week until later in the spring as I see how camps play out. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Same question as your first one here, but this time about the Cardinals. How should TLR manage the pen for the post season, now that Ryan Franklin is turning back into a pumpkin?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Stop asking my questions about the file September 24_09, open on my desktop and mocking me openly as I chat with you people! (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why are there 5 relievers on each All-Star team? Also, just like in the NBA we forever get All-Star Jamal Magloire, we now get All-Star Zach Duke and Ryan Franklin.
(Jon from DC)
I'd take more. What category of player is better prepared for an All-Star Game than a one-inning pitcher? (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)I just traded Nelson Cruz and Scott Kazmir for Matt Wieters and Ryan Franklin in a keeper league. Bad move?
(bam022 from Chicago)
It's Cruz for Wieters and a shot at some saves. I'd have done it, and I think Cruz is for real. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a decent chance Ryan Franklin stays Cardinals closer the whole year? If not him, is Chris Perez and not Motte the likely top candidate?
(Rob from Dallas, TX)
I rank the Cards' relievers Perez, McClellan, Motte, Kinney, Franklin. I don't know that any of them will hold the closer's job long enough to be fantasy-viable. Franklin looks like last year's George Sherrill to me. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jay, what's your take on the closer situations in St. Lou and Seattle? How much is the flux costing each team?
(murphy654321 from Waltham)
Well, I can certainly see how TLR's fidgeting might quickly destroy Motte's confidence. He seems bent on having Ryan Franklin as his closer, and as somebody who's rooting for the Brewers in that division, I welcome that move.

As for Seattle, it seems quite likely Morrow didn't get enough innings in Arizona to be ready for the season. I know he wants to be the mariners' closer instead of a starter, but that doesn't mean he should be before he's physically ready. (Jay Jaffe)
