2016 It may seem strange to look at Ellis' numbers from 2015 and think “what a rebound,” but that's where we are with the veteran backstop. After a dismal 2014 in which Ellis was among the majors' worst catchers to receive regular playing time, he posted the third-best WARP of his career last season. Ellis reached base at an impressive clip, rediscovered his modest power and upgraded his framing numbers from “oh god look away” to “well, okay.” He'll turn 35 in April and has a modest skill set to begin with so there's little margin for error, but when you carry enough clout to write the foreword to Clayton Kershaw's book, perhaps your margins are a little wider than they first appear.
2015 It took a long time for Ellis to get his chance in the majors. He was entrenched as the Dodgers' starting catcher the past three years, but his 2014 campaign was, on the whole, miserable. He posted the lowest batting average and TAv of any regular catcher (non-Jose Molina division). Ellis' only saving grace in the regular season was his career-best walk rate of 15 percent. It may have been a lengthy con, as he turned into Babe Ruth in the NLDS against the Cardinals, hitting .538/.647/.846 in the four games. Ellis is bad at framing (by our metrics, he cost his team the second-most runs in baseball last year, behind only Jarrod Saltalamacchia), but Clayton Kershaw adores him and he works well with the rest of the pitching staff. Those are decent notches to have in one's belt.
2014 The modern catcher is employed primarily to manage a pitching staff and hang tough behind the dish, so any offense is icing. The fact that Ellis carries a potent walking stick buffers his value when the results on contact are compromised, as was the case in 2013. He further made up for lost offense by nailing 44 percent of runners attempting to steal, the highest rate in baseball among regular catchers, though he received an assist from a pitching staff skilled at keeping baserunners close. At his advanced age, Ellis could suffer from a rapid decline at almost any moment, but given his late bloom it's all icing.
2013 The Dodgers' decision to let Rod Barajas walksomething he himself is unaccustomed to, of courseopened the door for Ellis to become a major-league regular for the first time at age 31, and the decision paid off handsomely. He flashed newfound power and showed that his walk rate wasn't entirely a function of batting in front of the pitcher, drawing unintentional passes in 8.7 percent of his PA batting eighth, 14.5 percent elsewhere. Unfortunately, Don Mattingly squandered that revelation by keeping him at the bottom of the lineup two-thirds of the time. Ellis did fade late in the season, and underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, but it's clear he's a keeper, one who should be under club control for most of his remaining shelf life.
2012 Ellis renewed his membership in the International Brotherhood of Backup Catchers, but even with Russell Martin's non-tender and Dioner Navarro's injuries and ineffectiveness, he found playing time hard to come by. When he did play, he gave the Dodgers more of what they've come to expect, namely solid on-base skills that are less valuable when he bats eighth, a minimum of pop, zero speed, and sound defense (27 percent caught stealing, in all of 15 attempts). With Rod Barajas gone and Tim Federowicz quite underseasoned, the Dodgers appear ready to grant Ellis a larger share of playing time; he offers nothing fancy, but he won't be a detriment.
2011 This 18th-round pick in 2003 beat the bushes long enough to develop solid on-base skills despite a lack of power, so Ellis's overdue induction into the International Brotherhood of Backup Catchers made for a silver lining when Brad Ausmus and eventually Russell Martin got hurt. He threw out 28 percent of base thieves, dutifully took the walks that came with batting ahead of the pitcher, glaciated around the basepaths, and scored fewer runs per time on base than all but two hitters with at least 100 plate appearances. Even without Martin, the Dodgers need look no further for their starter's caddy, though it appears Ellis will have to battle Dioner Navarro for the "honor" of backing up Rod Barajas.
2010 Just as a man who shows up at a barbershop every day will eventually wind up with a haircut, Ellis has hung around the high minors long enough to develop solid on-base skills despite a lack of power, though his OBP is boosted considerably by batting eighth in front of pitchers. The only non-converted catcher on the roster, he's well-regarded defensively, and threw out 29 percent of basestealers last season. Whatever major-league future he's got likely lies elsewhere, as Joe Torre prefers his backup catchers in the salty veteran flavor.
2009 At 28, A.J. Ellis is more suspect than prospect, but the defensively sound backstop (43 percent caught stealing) is on the 40-man roster, so they may as well give him a shot at the backup job, particularly in light of his improved hitting.
2008 A defensively sound backstop who's made glacial progress up the organizational ladder, A.J. Ellis outslugged his OBP last year for the first time as a professional

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-07-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Welcome to the chat room! Got any idea why the Cardinals found it necessary to defenestrate George Kottaras so quickly as Yadier Molina stand-in? Is he THAT bad at catcher defense? Supporting evidence?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Yeah, he is. In 2013 he put up -33 runs per 7000 pitches. That's really bad. Worse than Salty, and worse than A.J. Ellis (who admits he's a terrible framer). (Noah Woodward)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)He's got a career .882 ops in the minors and as a SS. He doesn't seem to get a lot of love but plate discipline always translates so well(the reason AJ Ellis has been immediately succesful imo) and he's got tons of it.
(Derek from LA)
I'm lost. Who does?

A.J. Ellis is fun. Pretend for a second that small samples and arbitrary endpoints/playing time thresholds aren't things, because I want to mention this stat and don't want you to make fun of me: Ellis has the second-highest OBP (.383) among catchers since 2008, min. 300 PA. (Ben Lindbergh)
