YearComment
2013 The retooled swing that Matt Downs unveiled in 2011 was exploited mercilessly last year, and even a willingness to play wherever needed wasn't enough to make him an asset.
2012 Downs has a long, slow swing. This is news only because he had a short, compact swing in 2010, but tinkered with it to add power. Broad-shouldered and tall for a middle infielder, Downs was killing mistakes, launching rockets and bombs to produce a slugging percentage better than anything he'd done in full-season ball—even topping his California League marks. So far, the price he's paid is a strikeout rate almost double the 11 percent he posted in the minors. Considering he had the second-leading VORP total among the surviving Astros batters while playing about one third of a full season, that's a pittance. Pitchers were caught by surprise by his power surge in 2011, and the book on him will change for 2012. Expect more strikeouts and a lower batting average, but as a player with multi-positional flexibility and the ability to play nearly average defense at the keystone, he's definitely a waiver wire success story.
2011 The Astros claimed Downs off waivers from the Giants late last August, but he played only sporadically down the stretch. Armed with a short right-handed stroke, he has always been able to hit, especially for average—in the lower levels of the minors, anyway. He has a strong arm, but limited range keeps from being able to play shortstop and tarnishes his value as a utility infielder. The Astros already have a similar player in front of him in second baseman Jeff Keppinger, meaning that Downs' best chance to make the club may come as a pinch-hitter.
2010 Downs is sort of a fair-haired organizational soldier, a scrapper they like for his quick bat, which contains a little bit of power. He's gifted with a strong enough arm that they can ponder his uses at second, third, or in the outfield. Unfortunately, he lacks the range to stick at second, and his bat doesn't have the power to fix any of the Giants' problems at any position. If he can adapt to the rigors of pinch-hitting, he could have a Dobbs or Norton type of career, but that's not usually a definition you find in the dictionary under 'upside.'
2009 Utility man Matt Downs has played everywhere but center field and catcher as a pro—he even worked as a relief pitcher at the University of Alabama—and offers power, speed, and a .310 lifetime average, though he’s been old for his levels.
