2013 Despite his abysmal year at the plate, Descalso was the best thing in the store for the Cardinals at second base last September, and the club reaped the benefit of his steady glove and timely hitting down the stretch and in the postseason. His numbers suffered from an abnormally low BABIP last year, but even at his best Descalso is a max-effort grinder with gap power and only moderate on-base skills. He can play a reasonable shortstop and fill in anywhere around the infield, meaning he’s ideally suited for a utility role—a position he’ll assume either immediately or at the dawning of the Kolten Wong Era.
2012 Pegged in the role of late-inning defensive replacement at third base, Descalso filled in admirably as a starter early in the season while David Freese battled injury. With 24 extra-base hits in part-time duty, Descalso’s short, lefty swing brings gap pop. “Dirty Dan” also logged time at shortstop and second base, where he could battle for more regular playing time as a younger, less expensive alternative to Skip Schumaker and pending free agents Ryan Theriot and Nick Punto.
2011 Descalso fits the profile of so many Cardinals prospects these days: older than you’d hope with little projection and a mixed set of skills. He’s a contact hitter with gap power who draws a few walks, though there’s some concern that big-league pitchers will knock the bat out of his hands. More importantly, he’s solid in the field and would be a huge improvement over Skip Schumaker’s cast-iron glove at the keystone. That would make him popular with the pitching staff, who will spend the spring secretly hoping that Descalso appeals to La Russa’s unrepentant grinder-love and heads north with the big club.
2010 An infield grinder from UC Davis taken in the third round of the 2007 draft, Descalso improved his bid to escape the marginalization so many organizational second-base types suffer by adding power for a second straight season. Because Schumaker's conversion to the keystone seems unlikely to be a permanent feature of future Cardinals infields, Descalso has an opportunity to slip into the mix, perhaps as soon as the second half. He'll need to retain last year's gains at the plate, because he won't help a lineup with much besides hitting them where they ain't, having little patience or speed.

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-10-28 18:00:00 (link to chat)Who is most likely to be the Cardinals' shortstop in 2014?
(whjohnson37 from Houston)
None of the above.

Seriously though the internal options aren't appealing. Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso both seem like fill-ins or utility options as opposed to starters, and while some have suggested that Kolten Wong can't be any worse at the position, I think he'd be too big of a stretch at the position defensively to give him a try. My guess based on internal options is Kozma. It wouldn't surprise me to see the club explore a trade or someone like Yunel Escobar is the market is right. (Mike Gianella)
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do the Redbirds turn to for inexpensive middle-infield help? With the Pujols situation looming, I'm guessing they won't have lots of money to spend.
(Matt from Chicago)
I'm willing to invest a measure of faith in Daniel Descalso at second base, which allows them to skip the now obviously abortive Schumaker experiment at the keystone. Which really leaves them shopping for shortstops, and the market's pretty weak on that score if you consider Jeter's not really in play. It's probably J.J. Hardy or bust, which is OK--you're the Cardinals, and you exploit the advantages of playing in front of the game's best fans in a fine park, playing with some of the best players in baseball while having a legit shot at contention. Haggle, sign, enjoy. (Christina Kahrl)
