BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2009 Claimed off waivers by the Padres in November, Denker was previously the player to be named later when the Giants sent Mark Sweeney to L.A. in late 2007. Denker rocketed from High-A to the major league bench by late May of last year, then put together a solid showing at Triple-A after being demoted around the All-Star break. A short second baseman lacking in secondary skills, he does have a solid approach at the plate and doubles power. Given the quality of his competition, that might be enough to win him the Padres’ second base job this spring.
2008 Travis Denker is a small second baseman picked up from the Dodgers in exchange for a few weeks of Mark Sweeney's time. He doesn't do much other than hit, and he's not a power guy, so his future could come down to what he does in Double-A this year
2007 Despite tearing up the Sally League in 2005, Denker struggled in a late-season promotion to Vero Beach. Given his age and the sample size, that hardly caused alarm. A repeat go at Vero----this time playing third base so Blake DeWitt could test out second----went almost as badly, and by mid-June Denker was back in Columbus and at the keystone. While he didn`t replicate his 2005 showing there, at the lower level he`s shown outstanding plate discipline and excellent power for a middle infielder, drawing comparisons to Marcus Giles (especially due to his size), but a lack of range and fringe-average arm suggest he`ll resume his journey down the defensive spectrum. An outfield corner is a possible home, but if Denker can`t crack the code of High-A pitching, it will hardly matter.
2006 Just 19, Denker destroyed Sally League pitching, out-hitting his more heralded teammate, Dewitt. A promotion to Vero Beach proved a bridge too far, at least in the short term. As impressive as his power and plate discipline are, Denker`s got a couple of things going against him--his glove and his size. Often compared to Marcus Giles, he`ll have to work as hard as Giles did to improve his defense or find another position. Stay tuned.
