DateQuestionAnswer
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any free agents with solid fantasy value out there? Jermaine Dye, Elijah Dukes, Pedro, am I forgetting somebody?
(dangor from New York)
John Smoltz, at least as a reliever, is somebody who can help if he's so inclined, though I guess he's content to go the broadcast route for the moment. A healthy Jarrod Washburn can certainly sponge up a useful number of innings. David Weathers is a handy reliever to have around even at his age. Carlos Delgado might still have something left once he recovers from hip surgery. Gary Sheffield is still a badass who can be a useful bench bat if so inclined, and Joe Crede can pick it at the hot corner if his back is right. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)At this point, Jason Pridie is the Twins' extra outfielder. If they sign someone, who would be a good fit? I'm hoping it's not Darin Erstad, who has Gardenhire written all over him.
(russadams from Baffin Bay)
I'd be more afraid of Podsednik (on a self-avenging deal aimed at his former employers, a la Joe Crede), or Reed Johnson as a right-handed bat they could use all three outfield positions, and an overly imaginative reputation for speed and value in center. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bill Smith says he expects that Ron Gardenhire will keep Nick Punto in the lineup somewhere. This guy is supposed to be Gardenhire's boss. Can't he make him see sense? I'm tired of this cycle where Punto is handed an opening day job, fails miserably, gets replaced by even worse players, gets the job back for the last month, hits decently, and gets a job again the next year. And since it also seems that the Twins are considering bringing back Joe Crede at third or Orlando Cabrera at second (in order to keep Punto somewhere), which is the better alternative? Finally, wouldn't someone like Felipe Lopez be great for the Twins?
(russadams from Target Center)
I'm not sure Nick Punto is so much the problem as an inability to put real players at third base and left field is the problem. If Punto can bat ninth, hit what he hits and play plus defense, he's an acceptable solution on a team with seven or eight actual hitters. Punto is better, relative to his position, than Delmon Young or the collective nightmare at third base or what Alexi Casilla (who I like) did this year. Focusing on him and not those problems is a mistake.

Lopez is a good player who brings more offense than defense, and that's always been a good path to the bench in Minnesota. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Christina, As a Twins fan, I was wondering if Joe Crede was the right man to acquire to fix the Twins problems at third base, and could we have gotten a better offensive shortstop who played the same good defense as Nick Punto?
(twinkies25 from MN)
I guess I have issues on this one, in that I sort of like the idea of putting Crede within the division to take his chance at putting the hurt on his former ballclub, and because a healthy Crede is an adequate source of right-handed power at the tail end of a lineup, not to mention a plus defender at the hot corner. The problem is that, by being a Twin, he becomes one of their perceived major power sources as a matter of their selection bias for a few too many powerless options.

The Punto quandary is a bit more complicated, in that there's a well thought-out group that says Punto's terrible when he's more than a utilityman, but Punto's pretty good when he's your top infield reserve. It might have been nice to go after Orlando Cabrera, but there really weren't that many options at short available on the market, and I'd rather still have Punto than, say, taking another spin with Adam Everett. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-02-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Joe Crede? I figure there's a chance that he'll perform better than Buscher/Harris, and if/when he gets hurt or sucks, Buscher/Harris is still there and all the team lost is a couple million dollars. On the other hand, Gardenhire loves crappy players, especially when they are veterans who can play defense, so there's no guarantee he'll come out of the lineup no matter how bad he is.
(russadams from St. Paul, MN)
I think the Twins can't help themselves sometimes. Year in and year out, they bring in no-upside veterans, usually good with the glove and with lousy OBPs. Then they wonder why they missed the playoffs again. Crede almost works in a Garret Anderson, the-other-guys-might-be-worse sense, but that's the nicest thing I can say about the deal. Was there really no way to trade anything for Hank Blalock? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)OK Steven, it's over. If you're Brian Cashman, what is your five-point-plan for the off-season?
(Joe from Washington, DC)
1. Take the Phillies job after the Steinbrenners keep me dangling as punishment for this season's results.
2. Find a comfortable home in the Philadelphia suburbs, maybe on the Jersey side of the Delaware.
3. Spend a lot of time thinking about whether to re-sign Pat Burrell.
4. Address the team's longstanding third base problems; try not to confuse Joe Crede with nostalgic feelings for Scott Brosius.
5. Take Joe Torre out for cheesesteaks when the Dodgers visit. (Steven Goldman)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)OK, as a Sox fan I would love to see Huston Street on the Southside, but what on Earth do we have to trade for him? Nothing, thanks Kenny.
(Doug from Chicago)
Josh Fields is being brought up in that context, and that doesn't sound so terrible to this A's fan. Yes, it's a weakly-stocked system, but if you decide to plan on using some of your playoff revenue to re-sign Joe Crede, Fields is just a prospect on the hoof waiting to be converted into something you can use. Given this team's core, no time like the present. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-04-25 15:00:00 (link to chat)White Sox: Fluke or for real?
(Izzy from DC)
I'm not a huge believer in the White Sox, but it's clear that at least in the early going, two things are going very right. First, you've got the bouncebacks from Joe Crede and Carlos Quentin that have helped resurrect that offense while marginalizing some rather unproductive players. Second, them Gavin Floyd and John Danks appearing to have finally put it together. These were well-regarded pitching prospects who've taken a long time to live up to their billing, but with a good coach like Don Cooper it shouldn't be terribly surprising to see them make the kind of nonlinear jumps that pitchers do when they finally Get It Together. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)A question about back injuries, specifically herniated discs. Being someone who had a microdiscectomy and laminectomy in mid 2007, I have NO idea how players like Joe Crede could possibly be thought to be close to 100%. Admittedly, I'm a 'weekend warrior' when it comes to athletics, but also am a known gym nut who concentrates on flexibility - almost nine months later and I still am super cognizant of the surgery. Thoughts?

You don't have Herm Schneider working with you, a contract that relies on your health, or the athletic base (I'm guessing ... few do.) 100% is a high standard and I'm sure Crede is as cognizant of it as you are. Doesn't mean he can't play and play well, though he's certainly risky. (Will Carroll)
