2013 Three years removed from his last major-league appearance, Vinnie Chulk popped up in the Milwaukee relief corps last May and stuck around for a few minutes, which tells you all you need to know about the Brewers' bullpen woes.
2009 A handful of rough relief outings last June got Vinnie Chulk dropped from the 40-man roster, which, along with the fact that he slipped through waivers, is an indication of his remaining value after his strikeout rate more than halved itself over the past four seasons.
2008 The other guy in 2006's Shea Hillenbrand trade, Chulk pitched well in an ill-defined role for most of last season before picking up set-up innings for a while after the All-Star break. Circulatory problems possibly related to his use of chewing tobacco ended his season in August, but he's expected to make a comeback in spring training. His upside is set-up man, but in the Giants' deep pen, he's more likely to resume a low-leverage existence.
2007 The Incredible Chulk spent the first half of the season running back and forth between Toronto and Syracuse due to an overly generous impulse when handing out gopher balls. The Jays gave up on him, sending him to the Giants with Shea Hillenbrand, which means the Giants get something longer-lasting than three months from the trade. Chulk`s top PECOTA comp above, Bob Chakales, wasn`t a great pitcher but he wasn`t a bad hitter, hitting .271 in 96 lifetime at-bats with three seasons over .300 in small samples. When your top pitching comp isn`t known for his pitching, you could be in trouble.
2005 Chulk has been bounced back and forth between the rotation and the pen three times in five professional seasons. He was one of the only Jays relievers to not get a crack at the closer's job last year, instead serving a the main set-up guy in June and July. He had problems with left-handed batters (905 OPS) that he needs to address, unusual for a guy whose best pitch is a sinker. Fantasy players: Here's your sleeper in this bullpen.
