BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 He was once touted for a sweet swing, but Cepicky is just Ron Calloway except with a bit more power. Also like Calloway, the Nationals don't have any place for Cepicky to play and no pressing reason to create one for him.
2003 Frank Robinson raved about Cepicky seemingly every other day after his call-up. It must have been the cool, refreshing breeze of his prodigious whiffs. Like Vladimir Guerrero, Cepicky swings hard at everything that moves. That’s the last time he’ll ever be compared to Vladimir Guerrero, unless you count both men’s ability to effectively exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen. With every year that passes, it becomes clearer Cepicky will never learn the strike zone enough to be anything resembling an effective big league hitter. Spare outfielders we’d rather see make the club over Cepicky: Ron Calloway, Val Pascucci, Terrmel Sledge, Herm Winningham.
2002 To witness Cepicky’s prodigious power, you’ll need to get to the ballpark early—at least 90 minutes before the first pitch. He maintains his batting practice mentality when the game starts, swinging at everything that’s thrown. The Expos think highly enough of him to have sent him to the Arizona Fall League, but he continued to show that he just doesn’t get it. Wilton is being way too charitable; Cepicky won’t begin to approach that projection until he realizes that the strike zone exists for a reason.
2001 Matt Cepicky is a chunky ex-football player who gets high marks from scouts for his power potential after being a first-team All-American at Southwest Missouri State. After an inauspicious start, you could give him some benefit of the doubt. It was his first full season hitting with wood, and the Florida State League is a tough place to hit for power. Cepicky’s lack of patience as a hitter is an enormous roadblock to success.
