YearComment
2012 Dave Bush is a journeyman without stuff, so he is only suited to emergency roles or roster filling.
2011 The only right-handed starters currently working in the majors with less velocity on their fastballs than Bush are knuckleballers Tim Wakefield and R.A. Dickey and necromancer Livan Hernandez, and with Bush’s strikeout and walk rates quickly converging, the Brewers cut ties with the veteran right-hander. They received 870 innings of occasionally good work out of him over the last five years, but recently his spot in the rotation had been more a matter of hope than faith. Milwaukee’s often immobile defense hasn’t done him any favors, and perhaps a move to a larger ballpark would reduce his sky-high home-run rate and help him achieve a Moyer-esque late-career revival, but the odds aren’t good.
2010 While it may look like Bush fell off a cliff last year, it was really just the culmination of a slow, steady decline. When he arrived in Milwaukee, Bush was a ground-ball pitcher with a fastball that touched 90 who kept his walk rate low, threw first-pitch strikes and let his infield make plays behind him—but four years on, that’s not him anymore. His fastball, which he threw less than half the time, now sits at 88, his first-pitch strike percentage has dropped, his line-drive percentage and walk rate have increased, and among NL starters only Ted Lilly induced fewer ground balls last year. The ingredients that led to Bush’s modest success are nowhere to be seen, so new pitching coach Rick Peterson will have his work cut out for him.
2009 Bush’s 2008 performance was really a tale of two seasons. Early mechanical struggles led to a brief exile to the bullpen and even a trip to Nashville; through May 22 he made just two quality starts out of eight (6.56 ERA, 4.6 K/9, 3.5 BB/9). Luckily, he turned things around, making 13 out of 21 quality starts with a 3.38 ERA, 5.5 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9. Don’t take his tidy ERA as evidence that he’s finally pitching up to characteristically strong peripherals; his already-problematic home-run rate soared and his strikeout and walk numbers deteriorated. What changed was the defense behind him; Bush’s BABIP dropped 85 points to an unsustainably low .238. He’s a solid innings-eater, but when his luck evens out, next year’s numbers might look more like 2007's than 2008's.
2008 Bush appeared poised for a breakout after posting the best strikeout-to-walk ratio among NL ERA qualifiers in 2006; PECOTA envisioned his 2007 ERA to be around 4.00. Instead, everything went in the opposite direction: his strikeout rate went down, his walk rate went up, he generated fewer grounders and more fly balls, and was burned by an increased BABIP (thanks, porous infield defense) and the highest rate of fly balls becoming home runs on the team. Topping it off, his career-long pattern of struggling at the start of games continued-opposing hitters ripped him at a .350/.390/.540 pace in the first frame. For all of that, Bush remains a low-cost inning-muncher who still provides reason to hope that his ERA can catch up to his peripherals.
2007 Of the many Bushes plying their trade in public these days, this one is by far the most productive, and he was only league-average last year. A college closer turned starting pitcher, Bush arrived from Toronto and was slotted into the rotation, where he put his groundballing ways to work. Bush`s already great control improved even more, and he even found a few extra strikeouts. Ned Yost`s comparisons to Chris Carpenter might be a bit premature, but Bush has become a steady, productive rotation regular. Those PECOTA comps are a scary bunch; Garcia had a solid run of about a decade, but the other three had a useful lifespan of about two seasons apiece.
2005 We hear a lot about converted starters who become good relievers. Bush was actually a closer at Wake Forest and became a starter in 2003, his second pro season. He has little upside, but with a healthy arm, reasonable command and four good pitches, he's ready to be a mid-rotation innings muncher for a few years, Jim Clancy to Halladay's Dave Stieb. Not pitching until college, and being a reliever until he was 23, bodes well for his health.

2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)Just got a tweet that Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder would like to have a word with you regarding your comments about the Cubs. Why is it more likely that they and their buddies will crater than that the Cubs will continuing being what they've been?
(Bill from New Mexico)
In my opinion, the Cardinals need every single start from Chris Carpenter from here on out to have a fighting chance at the playoffs. And as far as the Brewers go, I mentioned earlier that acquiring a top-tier pitcher might actually put them ahead of the Cubs. But I get a bit wary when I see that four of their five rotation spots are filled by the underachieving Dave Bush, back-end extraordinaire Braden Looper, the disappointing Manny Parra, and the hang-it-up-already Jeff Suppan. I leave the odds to Clay and Nate, but it's really Dave Bush or Rich Harden. I think I know who I'd want pitching of those two. (Will Carroll)
