YearComment
2015 Emmanuel Burriss hit six home runs for Syracuse in Triple-A; his previous career total, majors and minors, 2,900 plate appearances in all, was six.
2013 Burriss was a below-replacement-level player yet again last year with the Giants. The Reds, needing to replace negative-WARP machine Wilson Valdez, signed Burriss to a minor-league deal, and while his versatility in the field and above-average speed might allow him to stick around as an injury replacement or a pinch-running option when rosters expand, his noodle stick makes that his ceiling. Meanwhile, Valdez went to San Francisco, so the Giants won't have to miss Burriss.
2012 Between Fresno and San Francisco, Burriss played seven positions in 2011 as the Giants scrambled for injury replacements and Burriss scrambled for a chance to be something more than a pinch-runner. Burriss switch-hits, rarely strikes out, has good speed, and learned to take ball four while he was in Fresno this year, which, in theory, puts him about 10 home runs shy of being a perfect super-utility player. Alas, those 10 home runs aren't coming. He hasn't hit a ball over an outfielder's head in the majors since May 2009.
2011 The fifth metatarsal bone that Burriss broke in his left foot in June 2009 cracked again in the Giantsí Cactus League opener on March 3, requiring a second surgery that erased the first half of his 2010 season. The latter operation, performed by Carolina Panthers orthopedist Dr. Robert Anderson, saw the screw inserted in the initial operation replaced with a larger one and marrow extracted from Burrissís hip sprayed on the fracture as part of a new experimental technique to accelerate healing. Burriss avoided another recurrence after returning to action, and almost perfectly replicated his career minor-league batting line in 67 Triple-A games, but that last isnít encouraging, and there are concerns about whether the two foot surgeries will have a lasting negative impact on his speed or mobility in the field, since both seemed diminished after his return.
2010 Burriss got dibs among the non-answers at the keystone, but that really only meant he got to be excused first. Two months in, he was sent to Fresno, where a broken foot shut him down by July, so there was no second act. It's worth wondering whether there ever will be. Rapid advancement hasn't helped him establish any element of his game: he's fast, but doesn't provide that much value on the bases. There is no power yet he pops up quite a bit, and he's impatient. While he might have the tools to be a good second baseman, he needs reps, having ping-pong'd between short and second. Figuring out whether there's something to be recovered should require time in Triple-A.
2009 By the end of April it seemed as if the Giants were filling out their roster by taking players in alphabetical order off an organizational list. Bowker nearly skipped Triple-A to platoon with Aurilia at a position heíd never played in the minors. Bocock was their first attempt to fill the shortstop position vacated by the injured Omar Vizquel, and when Bocock didnít hit, they turned to Burriss, who flunked out of High-A in 2007 only to inexplicably start 2008 with Triple-A Fresno. The teamís first-compensation-round pick out of Kent State in 2006 acquitted himself surprisingly well. A speedy slap hitter with a decent plate approach and a good glove, Burriss settled in as a solid backup at second and short and will battle for the second base job in spring training.
2008 Burriss runs very well and has the kind of slappy approach at the plate that should lead to Juan Pierre-like .300 batting averages. The California League owned him last year, however, to the point that he had to be sent down to the Sally League. While his line at Augusta is nice, it makes him a 23-year-old who hasn't gotten to High-A yet. His speed and glove will get him to the majors; they just won't get him playing time once there.
2007 A supplemental first-round pick from Kent State, Burriss is a leadoff hitter all the way. He has no power at all and isn`t expected to develop any, but, unlike a lot of similarly-skilled players, he knows it and doesn`t swing for the fences. He`s a contact hitter who will take a single or a walk and then use his speed to get to second--his 35 steals led the league by 13. No one doubts that he has the range to play shortstop. The questions all have to do with strength-whether he`ll ever be strong enough to keep the bat from being knocked out of his hands or to make throws from the hole.
