2009 For reasons that have never been made clear, the Yankees never gave Chris Britton much love despite a fine rookie season in Baltimore and strong work at Scranton. Non-tendered, he signed a minor league deal with the Padres.
2008 Britton is young and had a useful rookie year for the O's, so when Brian Cashman acquired him for Jaret Wright, it was a major steal, something for an expensive corpse. It soon became apparent that the Yankees were satisfied with winning half the battle, ridding themselves of white elephant Wright, and didn't care much about making use of Britton. The rotund reliever put up good numbers at Triple-A Scranton, but failed to stick in the bigs despite the bullpen being more than unsettled. Rumor had it that Britton was unpopular with Joe Torre, that his stuff failed to impress, and that his 20-stone build was a turnoff. Whatever the reason, to paraphrase Billy Preston, nothing for nothing leaves nothing. In order to get something, the Yankees need give Britton an honest shot at this year's pen.
2007 Britton burst on the scene in 2005 with a dominating relief season at High-A Frederick; when he continued to impress, striking out six of the first ten batters faced at Bowie last year, the Orioles brought him up to the majors. Britton was a lucky accident for the Orioles, an eighth-round pick from 2001 who was nearly written off after injuries wiped out his 2003 season, then moved to the bullpen in 2004 to pitch himself back into shape. `Shape` is going to be a problem with Britton, who was rather generously listed at only 280 last year. The Orioles let that scare them into trading him to the Yankees for Jaret Wright; see the Kris Benson comment.
2006 Britton was the Orioles` minor league Pitcher of the Year, a rare honor for a non-closing reliever. He`s been around for several seasons, had some adventures-like having a metal plate inserted in his forehead after he failed to catch a come-backer-and missed all of 2003 with injury. He has generally pitched well, using a mid-90s fastball and slider, without getting any attention. That changed after this year; it`s amazing how striking out twelve batters per game and holding opponents to a .172 average will do that.
