BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2003 Expected to challenge for a rotation spot in camp after coming over in the Albie Lopez deal, Bierbrodt endured a trying spring training where he had trouble finding the plate. For three months he went through all sorts of off-field regimens and extended spring training to iron out his control. He had just begun pitching in A-ball when things went from bad to worse, as he was shot twice in a restaurant in Charleston on June 7. He spent the rest of the year rehabbing and is supposed to be ready to pitch in spring. Piniella has already said Bierbrodt will get a shot at the rotation if he’s ready to go.
2002 When the Devil Rays cashed in Albie Lopez, the take was Bierbrodt, a young left-hander with a history of injuries and inconsistency. With Tampa Bay, he showed none of the former but plenty of the latter, alternating gems and torchings with a randomness that would make Jason Bere envious. There’s a school of thought, though, that says you’re better off taking a guy who runs hot and cold than a guy who’s unfailingly mediocre, because a hot-and-cold guy has at least shown that he’s capable of pitching very well. Bierbrodt has shown that; how often he’ll actually do it is anyone’s guess.
2001 The question of whether Nick Bierbrodt will develop into a prospect has been put off again. He missed a good part of 1999 with elbow problems, a strained back cost him almost three months during 2000, and he went down with a tender elbow during winter ball. Assuming he can pitch, he would be in the mix for the fifth spot in the rotation. He’s got a good sinker he can get into the mid-90s, with a good curve and change-up.
2000 He’s been pushed hard since being the organization’s first #1 pick, and in large part he’s responded. Bierbrodt had a rough end to the season after pitching for Team USA in the Pan Am Games last year. He has to get those ratios under control to be truly dominant; there’s plenty of time for him to work out the kinks in Tucson next season.
1999 One of several good pitching prospects in the D’backs’ low minors, I'm less impressed with Bierbrodt than a lot of other analysts. He's had some pretty unimpressive ratios, even before adjustments, and he's tall and thin, which makes me think he's an injury risk.
