2013 See the “B” up there next to “Bats:”? That’s kind of misleading, since Betemit is a switch-hitter in name only. Not once has he been allowed to bat from the right side even 90 times during a season, and it’s easy to see why: his career TAv is .204 vs. lefties and .301 against righties. Betemit has spent a long career treating southpaws like Resident Evil zombies genetically engineered to throw 500 mph. That seems out of line with Umbrella’s M.O. to us, but we’re not the ones with the delusion . . . or the 100-point platoon split. He’d be more valuable if he could feign playing defense, but as a part-time player or the strong-half of a DH platoon, he can definitely help a ballclub.
2012 A leather-deficient corner infielder and nominal switch-hitter, Betemit traditionally struggles against lefties but has posted a solid .292/.363/.486 line against right-handed pitching over the last three seasons. Acquired from the Royals last July, Detroit plugged him into its yawning third-base void and made the most of the incremental benefits his bat can provide, but a sore knee slowed Betemit down the stretch and he is not high on the Tigers’ free agent wish list. His modest power and ability to at least masquerade as a third sacker make him a decent low-cost option for a contender spending money in other places, especially one with a strikeout-oriented pitching staff and a more defensively accomplished platoon partner. Funny, that sounds a lot like the Tigers.
2011 After signing a minor-league deal prior to last season, Betemit became one of the Royals' most productive hitters. It was all due to the switch-hitter's performance against southpaws. A career .230/.275/.362 hitter against lefties heading into 2010, Betemit crushed them to the tune of a .312/.398/.532 line last year. It's a small sample (88 plate appearances) and therefore hard to believe—he didn't hit nearly as well in Omaha before getting the call in late May, and hit a combined .240/.302/.396 in September and October in the majors—but as the player picking up the majority of starts in a platoon, Betemit could provide plenty of pop against righties. The Royals may still be left wishing that they had cashed in their chips rather than attempting to re-bottle lightning.
2010 The Sox hoped Wilson Betemit could be their supersub in the infield, but his bat had him playing that role at Triple-A—and not well. He'll be in the Royals' camp this spring.
2009 It was a disastrous season for Betemit; after he struck out seven times in his first 13 at-bats, it was revealed that he couldn't actually see the ball because a case of pink eye prevented him from wearing his contact lenses. A few days after returning from the DL, he strained a hamstring and disappeared again. Once he came back, Girardi kept trying to give him playing time substituting for A-Rod and Giambi, but Betemit consistently spit it back, striking out prodigiously and piling up errors at third. Traded to the White Sox for Swisher, he'll get a chance to win the third-base job. He has the pop for the position, but as a notional switch-hitter (.232/.276/.360 career vs. lefties) with a swiss-cheese glove, he's only an asset if you're comparing him to Juan Uribe.
2008 Wilson Betemit might have been more aptly named Wilson Betamax. Like that 1970s technology, Betemit is a potentially useful appliance that has failed to find acceptance in the marketplace. This is partially due to his having been stuck behind better or more expensive players-specifically Chipper Jones, Nomar Garciaparra, and Alex Rodriguez-but also in part because of his limitations. He's a switch-hitter who doesn't hit switched (.232/.281/.353 career batting righty) and can play all over the field, but doesn't excel anywhere. If you're in need of a platoon solution to keep you above replacement level at one of the infield corners, he's quite valuable, as his lefty swing has a bit of pop (career .268/.347/.464, 22.6 AB/HR). As a reserve, he's the sort of luxury the Yankees have tried to win without this decade. Given their situation at first base, it's good that they've given in.
2007 Illegally signed out of the Dominican Republic at the tender age of 14, Betemit endured a rocky relationship with the Braves as the shine wore off his star prospect status. Honored as a minor league All-Star from 1999 to 2001, Betemit`s career stalled at Triple-A, where he made almost 1,300 plate appearances over three seasons; he made the big club in 2005 partly because he was out of options. Despite hitting well above expectations that year, he was consigned to fill-in status; the Braves refused to move Chipper Jones off third base and decided that Betemit`s body had thickened too much to merit his taking over shortstop. Still a reserve as 2006 dawned, Betemit hit well when Jones was sidelined in April and July, but scrambled for at-bats in between. Desperate for relievers, the Braves sent him to L.A. for Danny Baez and Willy Aybar, a younger and less-heralded, but essentially comparable player. The Dodgers hoped Betemit would solve their third-base vacancy, but he ran hot and cold. He`s still the starter, but Ned Colletti openly trawled for upgrades over the winter, leaving open the question of how committed the team is to Betemit despite his youth and low salary.
2005 Because of the excessive hype early in his career, he'll always have the patina of disappointment about him. But there's still a strong chance Betemit will develop into a useful contributor at the major league level. He can capably man third, provide some pop and make good contact. His likely destination is probably somewhere in non-Coors Vinny Castilla territory, which has its uses, provided you're not paid like Vinny Castilla and provided you're not trotted out there every day.

DateQuestionAnswer
2012-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it possible that people place too high an expectation on prospects to produce at difficult positions? Its like some people are satisfied with a first baseman that posts a .750 OPS who wasn't a highly touted prospect and act like a prospect has no value at all unless he posts a .800 OPS at catcher. Nobody cares if Wilson Betemit puts up .775 OPS at DH. On the flip side, it would be a catastrophe for Jesus Montero to do so because he has no value unless he is catching.
(Tim from Seattle)
Sure. It's human nature to grade against expectations rather than an objective standard, and it's a hard habit to break. There are mediocre movies I've enjoyed far more than good movies, because I had expected the good movies to be great ones. I like to call this the "Matt Wieters Conundrum". (Ken Funck)
2012-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Endy Chavez going to get 400 abs this year?
(Abe Froman from Chicago)
I’ll give him 300, but not 400. With Wilson Betemit signing in Baltimore this off-season, it seems more likely that Nolan Reimold gets a lot of the LF time, also spending some time at DH with Betemit and giving Endy some starts in LF on those days. If Chris Davis happens to crash and burn or get injured, it’s possible Betemit plays first/third, Reimold DHs, and Endy plays close to full-time, though. (Derek Carty)
2011-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be your vote for the AL Manager of the Year? Also, will Mike Napoli be eligible for the ALDS after his kiss to the Angel dugout in the season's last game incites a brawl? :-)
(jhardman from Apex, NC)
Good question. A few weeks ago I'd have said Terry Francona, but his stubborn refusal to move Lackey out of the rotation and stretch Aceves out is one of the main factors in the team's slide.

I think Jim Leyland might be a good choice given that you really have to squint to figure out how Detroit has gotten to the top of the AL Central given all of their injuries and roster mismatches. That's also a credit to Dave Dombrowski, whose acquisitions of Wilson Betemit and Doug Fister have really helped. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-03-15 16:00:00 (link to chat)Any big 2011 free agents that you particularly like? Crawford, CLee, Webb, DLee? Who should I hope my team signs. These days it seems like a big contract is almost always a bad deal. Holliday, Bay,
(Ron Lewis from Atl)
Well let’s see here. There’s this guy named Mauer who looks pretty good as a free agent. (Oh, I know, the Twins are probably going to sign him. Other names that I would love to have on my favorite team: Victor Martinez, Adam Dunn, Jayson Werth, and maybe a guy like Wilson Betemit. The big stars in position players mostly have options or are likely to be signed before they get to free agency. The free agent crop next year, isn’t a place to find game changers, but there are some good, solid players in that bunch. On the pitching side, CLee and BWebb are welcome in my clubhouse any day of the week. Preferably, every fifth day. I also still believe in Matt Capps, and he’ll be available to the highest bidder. (Dennis from Monterey Park, CA)
I'm not a fan. He was over his head last year, and easily overmatched. We'll see how good he is in 2009 though. (Marc Normandin)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)WHAT A DEAL FOR THE YANKS!!!!
(YankeesFan from (NY,NY))
A lot like this here in the chat queue. I think that is the one aspect of this that's pretty wonderful regardless of what happens with Teixeira. The Yankees gave up Jeff Marquez, who seems a good bet to never pitch in the big leagues, dealt a pitching prospect for another who looks even better who doesn't have to be put on the 40-man, and Wilson Betemit, who played his way off the team. What's not to love about that? (Steven Goldman)
2008-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Pink eye? How do you get DL'ed for pink eye, Wilson Betemit?
(Seth Rogan from Cali)
A) You don't want anyone else getting it.
B) Needed the roster spot. (Will Carroll)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were going to take one 3B upside pick late in the draft, would it be Willy Aybar, Wilson Betemit, Morgan Ensberg, Dallas McPherson, or someone else altogether?
(Fantasy Manager from Scoresheet League)
Third base is loaded this year, but it's also kind of cut and dry. I'm not particularly fond of anyone on that list, though taking a late, late flyer on Ensberg is tempting. (Marc Normandin)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you were forced to pick one former 3B prospect to return to glory this year, would you take Andy Marte, Wilson Betemit, or Dallas McPherson?
(theguag from Louisville)
Betemit, albeit in a supersub role. (Christina Kahrl)
