BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Bethancourt is blessed with all the right tools to become a special defender. The only thing holding him back from claiming a big-league gig is his bat. Thereís some potential to be found in his raw power and bat speed, but his approach is tedious. Bethancourt looks fastball and swings fastball, regardless of the location of the pitch or situation. Age is still on his side, and he could become a backup without much offensive improvement. Bethancourt remains a candidate to post the worst walk-to-strikeout ratio on his team.
2012 Basestealers should avert their glance when on the same field as Bethancourt to avoid demise from mere eye contact. Bethancourt has the tools to become a defensive stalwart, since his arm is elite and he pops out of the chute quicker than a bulletóscouts talking about his pop times is akin to old men exchanging fish tales; the stories border on fabrication. While defense is Bethancourtís best act, he may become an asset at the plate, too. Above-average bat speed creates the sweet sound of power potential each time he makes contact, although his in-game results are yet to bear that out. Further, Bethancourt still treats the strike zone like a theory, and his susceptibility to secondary pitches make him a candidate to post the worst walk-to-strikeout ratio on the team.
2011 Young catcher Christian Bethancourt is a potential defensive whiz whom people expected much more from offensively in his full-season debut. He's still young and talented, and there's plenty of time.
2010 Teenage catcher Christian Bethancourt has shown impressive power for his age, and is worth keeping an eye on.

2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Christian Bethancourt taking the full time gig from Evan Gattis at anytime during this year?
(Derron from ATL)
Could depend on the rest of the Braves offense. If BJ gets it in gear and is a productive hitter, Uggla bounces back, etc. then the Braves will be able to go defense first behind the plate. If not, they'll need Gattis' pop. My guess is that injuries create plenty of at-bats for Gattis in other spots than just as the C. (Jeff Moore)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Christian Bethancourt going to hit and how much does it really matter?
(MattWinks from Madison)
I don't think he's going to hit. But he can still carve out a career at the highest level because of his arm/glove. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)is Christian Bethancourt's progress for real? And how many starts does he get in the bigs next year?
(horgejernandez from Brooklyn)
I don't believe in his bat. (Jason Parks)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Christian Bethancourt hit enough to be an everday big league catcher? I assume you believe that Hedges will?
(Paul from Rigadelphia)
He won't hit enough (Jason Parks)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jason, you've been a big fan of Christian Bethancourt's potential. Is he looking more and more like a defense-only catcher in the Bigs? I know he's been young for his levels, but there doesn't seem to be much progress with the bat.
(DF from Wilmington, N.C.)
Defensive profile is very exciting, but the bat has been a disappointment. I'm not optimistic. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Christian Bethancourt is a full time player in his prime, or does he profile as more of a backup catcher?
(mj from toronto)
He has the skill-set to be a very good starter, but it takes more than just raw tools to make it. I've questioned his #want in the past, and after a dismal offensive ceiling, its hard to see anything beyond a backup, and even that isn't a given if the bat doesn't improve. (Jason Parks)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Bethancourt presumably heads back to AA in '13. Is it too early to be concerned about repeating a level? What does he need to show at the plate to retain his prospect status?
(Eugene from S.F.)
The ability to recognize pitches and make consistent hard contact. I'll be honest, I'm not sure he has the tools to hit quality pitching. We shall see. Perhaps it has more to do with #want than we know about. (Jason Parks)
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Expand on your unhealthy love for Christian Bethancourt. I feel the same.
(Mark A. from BPN)
I did in today's article on BP: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=15670 (Jason Parks)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Howdy, Professor! Who have you seen in the AFL that has caught your eye? Also, how's the knee healing up?
(GBSimons from Boise, ID)
I was only able to catch a few AFL workouts, but Christian Bethancourt was crushing in the cage. In drills, he was showing off his 80 arm, but it was his swing that really impressed me. He's very easy and fluid, using his hands very well. He was sending ropes to all fields, showing plus-plus power potential. If he can bring that to game action, he could become something very special. He has a chance to be the complete package. Long way to go, though. (Jason Parks)
2011-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)How encouraging is Christian Bethancourt's offensive progress?
(Hip2Hops from Seattle)
It's very encouraging. He's so young, and so good defensively, that it's not going to take a ton of offense for him to be a very valuable prospect. The approach is still a concern, but what you have seen represents significant, and very real progress. (Kevin Goldstein)
