DateQuestionAnswer
2014-08-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any interest in Adam Dunn or John Danks? If so, will the White Sox make a move? They did part with Gordon Beckham for next to nothing.
(Nick from Chicago)
I was surprised Dunn didn't get moved to a team wanting a bat off the bench or DH. I suppose he's not the easiest player to fit onto a roster. As for Danks, he was reportedly pursued by a few teams. I think his contract situation probably caused any potential deal to be benched until the winter. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who are few guys you'd be buying/selling right now?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I guess I don't necessarily keep a list like this lying around, but off the top of my head...

I'm selling: Jesse Chavez, Chase Whitley, Lonnie Chisenhall, Gordon Beckham

I'm buying: Kole Calhoun, Ian Kennedy, Joey Votto, Michael Brantley, Will Smith (J.P. Breen)
2014-05-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)What is meant by someone who has a "metal-bat" swing? Do you have any strong examples of someone well known who really struggled going from a metal bat to wood bat?
(The Dude from Office)
Two different manifestations that basically come from the same source. The designation can refer to someone who has an inflated average or inflated power with metal, and it's generally someone who's swing relies on the lighter metal bat to compensate for bat speed or efficient swing path. Gordon Beckham sticks out in my mind -- .400 hitter in college with a swing that had little chance of impact production at the big league level. (Pre-Draft Chat with Nick J. Faleris)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)While he's got a shot, is Marcus Semien fantasy-worthy, or just another warm body in the MI slot, mocking you, daring you to drop him every morning.
(RotoLando from Cloud City)
I'm a fan of Semien, and a converted one at that. Originally I billed him as a utility type but he's got a really nice approach and - especially in that park - enough pop to matter. Add in that his competition is Gordon Beckham and I think he can last in the bigs this year (Craig Goldstein)
2013-03-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Back in 2008, you wrote a wonderful piece for Camden Depot on Gordon Beckham and suggested that the hitch in his swing would make his transition to a wooden bat difficult. After brief initial success, he has struggled. Did you hit that projection right or was it something else that caused him to peter out so far?
(Shepherd from Baltimore, MD)
Thanks for the kind words. Beckham's issues have stemmed in large part from some of the issues I questioned at the time of the draft, but I could have just as easily missed on that one (to be honest). The bat speed is very good, and ultimately if he had been able to more successfully make adjustments to the way MLB pitchers attack him, that bat speed could have been enough to overcome the length in the swing. When scouting for the draft, it's really a matter of highlighting potential issues and giving a best guess as to how much those issues will restrict the ultimate profile. Beckham's issues weren't tough to spot, and he probably went right around where he should have given that draft class. (Nick Faleris)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Gordon Beckham ever going to repeat his rookie season, or is he the girl that peaked in high school?
(faztradamus from work)
Standard rant: It all comes down to adjustment. The talent that made Beckham as first-round pick and allowed him to find success early on in his career still exists. He just needs to adjust so that those attributes can find utility on the field. I think he finds it again. (Jason Parks)
2012-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks as always, KG. I was wondering if you could comment on and compare two mid-20s, struggling, former top prospects that will be spending the spring with new hitting coaches: Gordon Beckham and Colby Rasmus. I know that both are dart throws, but which would you bet on bouncing back? What are their new ceilings, if any?
(smallflowers from slumpton)
I'd bet on Beckham first, but wouldn't bet big on either. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Gordon Beckham seems to have very low value at this point. Should I buy, or is he a bust?
(Joey from Omaha)
Beckham has the pedigree to eventually be a quality player, but Iím not banking on it at this point. Only if he comes cheap in an AL-only league would I consider him. (Derek Carty)
2011-11-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any redeming quality with Gordon Beckham?
(Geoff from Huntsville)
Scouts liked his bat coming up and projected him for more than this, but he's getting older now and it isn't happening. He's not hopeless; it's possible he becomes a post-hype breakout player at a scarce position, but there are a number of guys I'm taking ahead of him. (Derek Carty)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there hope yet for Gordon Beckham? I have such a hard time believing he's little more than a Scrappy Anklebiter type, but wow, that's not a good line this year. Please also repeat this question with Colby Rasmus.
(JT from Michigan)
Beckham's production will improve, but don't expect first-division results. Solid-avg type if he returns to form. Rasmus is going to be very good next year. I'm still a big fan. (Jason Parks)
2011-09-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is anyone still holding out hope for Gordon Beckham at this point? I was expecting something between an above average regular and a star at 2B.
(Jake from Kalamazoo)
Wherever there's a 24-year-old who was once rated the 20th-best prospect by Baseball America, there's also someone who's still holding out hope for him. You don't see a lot of players who put up three wins in 100 games at age 22 and then fall of the face of the earth, so I think it's still possible to be a Beckham believer without being deluded. Remember that .310/.380/.497 second half he had last season? It's not out of the question that he still has a season that looks something like that in him. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I love Gordon Beckham. There it feels better to get that out there. Why do I draft him every year and own him in my dynasty? Why is not owning him unthinkable? Will he ever justify that love?
(JT from Exhibition Stadium)
Eventually he might, but he not a guy I've ever drafted. I need to see him actually do something before I own him. Too many other bargain MIs out there each year. He's just not a guy that does anything exceptionally well, but if he ever manages to hit .300 and go 15/15 he's going to have very good value as a 2B. (Derek Carty)
2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who are your favorite players to watch this season? Who ya rootin' for?
(Goo Goo the Cat from Prowlin' Around, PA)
Rooting for? Well, I suppose I'm no supposed to root for players, but c'mon, how can you help it? I'm hoping to see John Danks bust out and get the sort of attention he deserves, and for Gordon Beckham to put everything together and be the star we thought he'd be. I want to see Wandy Rodriguez deliver that back half over a full season. I'm looking forward to seeing Carlos Zambrano get back to being in the news for his pitching. I'm wondering if Andy LaRoche puts up more WARP than any other NRI in anybody's camp if he can win the A's job at third base. I want to see Jim Thome's 600th career home run in person. I want to enjoy a full season of Starlin Castro at shortstop, having had to spend too much time away from Chicago last summer. I want to see what Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison do for the Fish, since that's about as entertaining a tandem of hitting prospects of similar vintage on any team anywhere. That's a few, but there are more. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm high on both Gordon Beckham and Ben Zobrist for next year. Are you in?
(Mike r from Tacoma)
Zobrist will have more power next year, but I can't see him consistently slugging over .470. I also think Beckham will play closer to his production in 2009 than 2010, but I don't see him being a consistent offensive threat either. I'd say I'm medium-high on them. (Eric Seidman)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Let's talk dynasty leagues.... Long term, Gordon Beckham or Mike Moustakas, assuming I have nothing useful at either position going forward.
(achaik from Maine)
I'm not 100% on how good Moustakas is going to be, but I know with Beckham I have had to mull this over for one of my own teams. His second half has been excellent, and he worked on his swing midseason with the hitting coach and got immediate results, so it should be safe to keep him. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)OK, Callaspo or Gordon Beckham (I'll have to waive Gordon)
(mwball75 from Cincy, OH)
I'm getting ready to give up on Gordon in one league, but I can afford to wait the year because it's a rebuilding team. This is short-term, so go with Callaspo. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I love Gordon Beckham, why does he have to suck at baseball?
(mwball75 from Cincy, OH)
I took over a team with almost no keepers of worth this winter, but I chose this one because Beckham and McCutchen were both there for $1. McCutchen I'm obviously keeping, but Beckham has been a disappointment, and I'm not going to give him an extension based on 2010.

In happier news though, I traded away almost every piece I drafted and kept from 2009 for inexpensive players I can keep in 2011. I'm going to have more than half of my roster full and less than half of my money spent, and the players I am keeping are good, young and able to be extended when the time comes. (Marc Normandin)
2010-06-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Gordon Beckham's chances of turning it around for the rest of the season? He has shown very little this season to believe he can be a star like people predicted.
(raiforever from Lansing)
There is no way he is this bad, but I'd be more inclined to think he'll be demoted before even being given a chance to turn things around. (Eric Seidman)
2010-05-11 16:30:00 (link to chat)So far it has been a rough fantasy season for me. I have had 5 players hit the DL already (Miguel Montero, Aaron Hill, Yunel Escobar, Carlos Beltran and Brad Hawpe). So I am playing with a lot of replacement level players. My main question is, should I keep Gordon Beckham and Jason Kubel? They have been in tremendous slumps. and if so, who should I replace them with? Is Ryan Ludwick a better option in the outfield? Please help.
(csatte1 from Baltimore, MD)
Gordon Beckham really seems like a young hitter who is adjusting. His BABIP is low because if too many grounders and pop-ups, but he should work that out. Jason Kubel just isn't hitting the ball as hard as last year. Fewer balls hit to the outfield, fewer HR. He's probably working out kinks in his swing, but I can't imagine he's as valuable as Beckham, even though I don't do fantasy baseball so I don't really know league scarcity that well. Ryan Ludwick seems he's just a little less patient hitter with maybe a little more power. Not sure how that plays in here. I guess Ludwick is better especially with Kubel needing to work out some kinks. (Matt Swartz)
2010-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gordon Beckham over the next two years becomes a better hitter than Cano?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
It really depends on how his plate judgment evolves and if he picks up a little more in the way of power production as he peaks. It's not a sure thing, but it's in the realm of possibility. (Steven Goldman)
2010-03-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)I know comps aren't the best way to describe players, but is there anybody the Ackley reminds you of? Who do you think he'll probably resemble offensively? And who defensively? Who will be the better player in a couple of years assuming they stay at 2B, Ackley or Gordon Beckham? Do you see another young 2b that could be better than these two?
(Wendy from Madrid)
Well, I'm not sure he's a 2b yet, so that's problem number one. I love him as a pure hitter. I think he's going to hit .300+ in the big leagues with .400 or so OBPs, but I'm not sure the power will even be average in the end. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-17 16:00:00 (link to chat)How good will Gordon Beckham be? Long term, Felix or Greinke?
(Dave from NY)
Gordon Beckham will be a league average third basemen, I think. He would've been a lot better if he could have played short.

The second question is completely about health (where Greinke has the edge), but on stuff alone I think I'd say Felix. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)At 2B, does Gordon Beckham (eventually) look to be an elite player at that position?
(jaymoff from Salem, OR)
I think so. I think he's going to sell a ton of jersey in that town. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, Marc. How much fantasy value do you foresee Gordon Beckham having this season and beyond? I'm intrigued by the move to 2B, but the lineup surrounding him doesn't inspire much confidence.
(MrOrange from CA)
There is a lot to choose from at second already, but Beckham's good enough that he'll rank well anyways. If he can pop 20 homers in a full season in Chicago while giving you double digits in steals and pretty good R and RBI numbers, then he's worth a lot. I don't see why he couldn't. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)What Gordon Beckham could become to the White Sox...if for no other reason than because the fan base is filled with "grinder"-loving morons.
(Scott from Chicago)
Mmm...grinder... (Tommy Bennett)
2010-01-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gordon Beckham still has a chance of being "the right handed version of Chase Utley" that the White Sox thought he was going to eventually become? Seems lofty to me, but it's lofty to compare anyone to maybe the 2nd best player in the game.
(scott from chicago)
I do think at Utley comp is pretty risky, but I do think he's the kind of guy who is going to sell a ton of jerseys in Chicago. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-12-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you expect Ben Zobrist or Aaron Hill to duplicate their performances in 2010? Between those two and Gordon Beckham's move to 2B, how much more or less valuable is a premiere second baseman next year?
(Ethan from New York, NY)
I actually like Ben Zobrist a lot. He hit pretty well in 2008 too, so it's nice to see him keep things going this past season. I haven't looked at Hill in detail yet (second base is this week's ranking redux though, so you won't have to wait long), but if the three of those players continue to hit, then yes, second base has a lot more worthwhile options that might add some depth to the rankings. (Marc Normandin)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a keeper Strat-O-Matic league, would you take Elvis Andrus or Gordon Beckham? Assume the team's other left-side infielder is someone like Brendan Harris, who can start at SS or 3B as needed.
(Rex Little from Big Bear, CA)
The difference in their ages and position--the White Sox appear to be committed to the Cuban Shawon Dunston at shortstop--mean I'd take Andrus. Keeper leagues are about long-term value. I like Beckham a lot, but a long-term 1 at short with a decent bat is what you build around. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who is your rookie of the year for both leagues ? I have Happ in the NL and Gordon Beckham in the AL.
(William from Mobile, AL)
Hanson chasing down Happ, and I've flip-flopped Beckham and Andrus a couple of times. Leaning Andrus right now. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the CYA (Greinke) and the MVP (Mauer) awards pretty well settled who do you have for RoY??
(kcboomer from kc)
I'm sort of ambivalent. I imagine it will be Gordon Beckham, but I feel like you could make just as good a case for Andrew Bailey or Jeff Neimann. Nolan Reimold had a good year too, and I'm sure that some people will claim that Elvis Andrus helped the Rangers accomplish... accomplish... Oh, never mind. (Steven Goldman)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Gordon Beckham has exceeded expectations so far, I would assume. Is it more of (a) being an exceptionally polished player coming out of school or (b) having a higher ceiling than originally thought at last year's draft?
(Clint from Chicago)
How about C. Reaching that ceiling much earlier than expected? He's going to be great. I'm really convinced that 2-3 years from now when you go to the Cell it's going to be filled with fans in Beckham jerseys. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you feel the same way about Gordon Beckham even if he stays at 3rd base?
(Swingingbunts from NY)
Yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Doesn't the AL ROY almost have to be Elvis Andrus? He's the 8th most valuable SS (by WAR) in all of baseball (and the 9th best SS offensively by wOBA)
(Aaron from YYZ)
Why use wOBA when EqA's testably more accurate? Referring to the following BP sortable-stats page, Andrus is the 11th best by EqA among the 27 MLB regulars at short, and 12th by EqR. Make it a matter of the AL, and he's seventh by EqR, and sixth by EqA. Decent work, certainly, and that's without getting into his value on defense. But then there's also Gordon Beckham, and a few other notables. Andrus' hot hitting in the second half certainly helps elevate his overall case.

2009-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Elvis Andrus, Gordon Beckham, Nolan Reimold, maybe Rickey Romero, or Andrew Bailey...who you got as AL RoY?
(Lincoln from Dallas)
Beckham, who just recently passed Andrus. It's very close.

I really like Gordon Beckham. He could win an MVP as a shortstop. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Gordon Beckham now a thirdbaseman, or does he ever become a regular up the middle?
(jlebeck66 from WI)
The White Sox absolutely need to get him to SS, preferably, next year. I'd settle for 2B, but simply put, allowing Alexei Ramirez to stand in the way of a clearly superior player is baseball malpractice. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-07-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Wieters, Gordan Beckham, are you surprised Beckham's off to the better start?
(john from ct)
A little.

This gives me a chance to follow up on something I wrote the other day, about using Beckham to get Halladay. I really like Gordon Beckham as a player, but if the White Sox are locked into Alexei Ramirez at shortstop, they won't maximize Beckham's value. It is in that case, and that case only, that trading him makes sense. If he's a third baseman, he's good, not great. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Gordon Beckham -- great player, or greatest player ever?
(BridgeportJoe from 36th and Lowe)
Becks coulda been something, if only he hadn'a married Posh Spice. Not Franz Beckenbauer, but sump'n special... Oh, *Gordon*? Yeah, he's pretty good. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any news on Gordon Beckham's defense down in AA?
(Jack from IL)
Solid but unspectacular. Arm and footwork are good enough for SS, range is iffy. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Gordon Beckham will be up before September?
(Rob from Dallas)
Yes. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's the ETA on Gordon Beckham. He's been tearing it up in AA. Also, do you see him moving to 2B in the majors? He's still at SS in the minors.
(bam022 from Chicago)
The reason to play him at short is so that you'll move Ramirez to CF, but that presumes Ramirez improves on last year and is better overall than Anderson. I don't think you move Ramirez to 2B, because he's terrible there and the bat doesn't play.

At what point do we scratch our heads and wonder why we're making so many decisions around Alexei Ramirez? Maybe he should be the supersub, starting four days a week at four positions and pinch-running for Jim Thome the other days. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)How do you rank these recent draftees as far as offensive potential; Smoak, Hosmer, Gordon Beckham, and Tim Beckham?
(Jimmy from South Bend)
Smoak, Hosmer, staggering gap, T. Beckham, G. Beckham. (Joe Sheehan)
