2012 The former San Diego Padres second baseman of the future is now joining his second organization since the Pads gave up on him, but he once held a lot of promise and is still just 27 years old. The O's liked him enough to hand him a major league deal in the hopes that he'll impress in spring training and make the team as a utility infielder. After two miserable seasons at Triple-A for San Diego, Antonelli played well there for the Nationals in 2011, displaying his usually excellent patience to go with a power resurgence and contact hitting adeptness. He definitely has a chance to contribute in Baltimore and certainly can't be any worse than the Cesar Izturis/Blake Davis types they've been using in the backup infielder role.
2011 Antonelli had more doctors' appointments than plate appearances last season, a shame given that the floundering former prospect performed well in the spring before being shut down. An injury to the hamate bone in his left hand required surgery after the Padres tried the rest-and-rehab route, and setbacks kept him from returning for more than a single game. Antonelli has always had noteworthy strike-zone recognition and some thump for a middle infielder, but has yet to conquer Triple-A and will be 26 in April; time is running out. The Padres non-tendered him in December, and he will serve as Triple-A depth for the Nationals this season.
2010 Antonelli seemed on his way to stardom after being the Padres' first-round draft pick in 2006, but after reaching Triple-A in 2007 nothing has been the same. Antonelli bulked up before his first season at Portland, and it cost him both bat and foot speed, and last season he missed considerable time to leg problems. He's now had two brutal seasons in a row, hitting a combined .209/.336/.306 in 610 at-bats, as he's been tinkering with his swing for so long now that he's eons from where he used to be mechanically. He can still draw a walk but that can't offset his total lack of power. He will go back to Triple-A this season, but it's difficult to envision him being anything more than a bench player in the major leagues, if that.
2009 After scoring 123 runs in 131 games across two levels with 21 homers and 28 steals, Antonelli looked like one of the brightest prospects in the system coming into the year, but he stumbled out of the gate at Triple-A after tinkering with his swing, and his game completely collapsed. The downward spiral was even worse than it appears; the horrible numbers in that slash line were only achieved with a surge in the final month. The tools are still there, but 2008 delayed his arrival for at least a year. The Padres are hoping he figures things out, because their alternatives at the keystone are few.
2008 Padres prospects come through some very good hitting environments, which makes evaluating them problematic; keep that in mind throughout this chapter. Antonelli was the 17th overall pick in 2006, and is a line-drive hitter whose work-the-count approach is a good fit for Petco. He played third in college, but with an organizational logjam at the hot corner, the Pads have tried to make him a second baseman. So far he's survived, but his defense is a work in progress, with a good arm and lateral range, but problems on the pivot.
2007 A first-rounder picked out of Wake Forrest last summer, Matt Antonelli has a good eye and quick hands; if he pans out, his upside is as a good-hitting second baseman.

DateQuestionAnswer
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is this a make or break year for Matt Antonelli?
(Craig B. from Quincy, MA)
Yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Caleb, what is your opinion on Matt Antonelli, he's struggling. Do you see the Padres resigning Iguchi because of this?
(HeAdFiRsT from Michigan)
I don't know a whole lot about Antonelli beyond what I've read from Kevin Goldstein and in the annual, but Iguchi... He hasn't been above-average since his rookie season, and hasn't shown much at all this year. I think he's on a serious downslope, and I'd be surprised if they resigned him. I guess it's possible if they need one more year of a stopgap, though. (Caleb Peiffer)
