|---|---|---|
| 2012-01-20 14:00:00 | Do you see any growth in power numbers for Elvis Andrus? Could he eventually hit 10-15? (Daniel from Montana) | I don't see it. I think he'll hit MORE home runs, but 15? Nah. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2012-01-26 13:00:00 | Who has more HR Power, me or Elvis Andrus? (Kate Upton from New York) | Elvis. He also has a better smile. (Jason Parks) |
| 2012-01-26 13:00:00 | Very random question:
What current prospect is most likely to have the longest career? Not the best player, the player most likely to resemble Julio Franco. Bonus points if the prospect eats a dozen egg whites before every game. (SC from Minneapolis) | Elvis Andrus strikes me as a guy that could pull a Vizquel and play until he's 75 years-old (Jason Parks) |
| 2011-10-17 13:00:00 | Thanks, Kevin. Just how high is Jurickson Profar's ceiling, and do you think the Rangers ultimately play him at SS, or move him to 2B in a year or two to play alongside Elvis Andrus? (Keith from Manchester, CT) | Well, in three years, Andrus leaves via free agency, so that takes care of that, no? (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2011-10-04 13:00:00 | Elvis Andrus is the __th best defensive shortstop in baseball. (Or from DENTON, BITCHES!) | one of the best (Jason Parks) |
| 2011-04-05 13:00:00 | Now that Elvis Andrus has established himself as a power hitter, will the 162-0 Rangers set the all time season record for home runs? Also, since they signed my dog to pitch out of the bullpen, is there a good chance they might also use him to shag homers on "bring your dog to the park" night? (jhardman from Rangerland) | I saw the highlight last night, and how is it that no one shouted, "Elvis has LEFT the BUILDING" when that went out? (Steven Goldman) |
| 2011-02-28 13:00:00 | You've listed Jurickson Profar in your Top 100 as a 17 year old. Do you think he will come through the Rangers system as a shortstop with Elvis Andrus ahead of him or switch positions? Also, can you comment on the other young SS prospect (Luis Sardinas) in the Rangers system in the same vein? (jhardman from Rangerland) | Profar is going to play Low-A this year, and Sardinas will likely be in a short-season league, so you are getting WAY ahead of yourself. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2011-02-28 13:00:00 | Does the fact that Elvis Andrus used Chacarron as his at-bat music raise his esteem in your eyes? (Or from Dallas) | The myth that I have some kind of hatred for Andrus is exactly that. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2011-02-22 13:00:00 | Professor - I know the minor league SS ranks are a bit thin, but what about the guys who have already been promoted? Who out of this group do you like to have the best MLB career - Starlin Castro, Elvis Andrus, Alcides Escobar or Reid Brignac? (bretsayre from nj) | Best career: Overall, I'll say Andrus. I don't think Castro stays at SS or he would be my choice. (Jason Parks) |
| 2010-12-14 13:00:00 | The Rangers lost out on Lee, consider Elvis Andrus to be a superior defender, and play in Jet Stream Park. Wouldn't this be a good time for the Indians to sing the praises of Fausto Carmona's power sinker and contact Texas? I mean, yeah, Cleveland needs Carmona, too, but this might not be a bad "sell high" scenario for them. (buffum from Austin TX) | Given the presence of so many other mid-rotation types being shopped, I would have to think Texas is better off seeing if Greinke's available for some package they can put together. Then, if not, they can turn around and comparison shop between the Blantons, Carmonas, etc. And given their depth, they can afford to be picky, instead of overpaying for any of them, in terms of treasure or talent. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-09-21 13:00:00 | I have Starlin Castro($3) and Elvis Andrus($9) in a keeper league and can only keep one, would you keep one over the other or neither?
(Mike from Chicago) | Starlin Castro every day, Mike. I have a giant fantasy crush on Castro, and was psyched when someone dealt him to me on a team I am rebuilding. He's 20 years old and has shown a ton of ability at the plate--I expect some more growth out of him. Rob McQuown and I have had this conversation a lot, but he reminds us of Rafael Furcal in a lot of ways (except Castro is at this point actually as young as he says he is) (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-08-20 15:30:00 | Jurickson Profar, son of Judeska and Chesmond; how does he rank when compared to guys like Elvis Andrus when comparing age and project-ability? (Erich from St. Paul, Minnesota) | Andrus has more tools, at least in the speed category. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-07-01 14:00:00 | The continued development of Elvis Andrus - your thoughts? (James from Stamford, Texas) | He's been better this year, but strangely so, as the OBP is up, but the SLG is only .337. I still don't think he's the next big thing, as much as just a really good player. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-05-24 14:00:00 | What do you think of Elvis Andrus more mature patient approach at the plate? Hopefully it will bode well for him as an offensive on base machine. (caseyj15 from Medford, Or) | The great thing about Andrus is that he's so young that you could anticipate further development, but as you've noted, what makes it especially interesting is how it hasn't been just a static, across-the-boards statistical improvement, but instead looks to be an adaptive change. If it sticks, he'll be the deluxe leadoff option the Rangers have needed for years, and a big part of why they'll rule the roost in the short stack. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-05-14 13:00:00 | Elvis Andrus's new patience leads me to believe he has significantly developed this year as a hitter. What do you think of his long range offensive outlook given his swift development? (caseyj15 from Medford, Oregon) | Well, I don't see him as a .418 OBP guy going forward. His BABIP (currently .389) is going to regress, but if he maintains this kind of patience he suddenly looks like a top-of-the-lineup guy instead of a bottom-of-the-lineup one. Add that to his plus defense, and that's a guy who's gonna go to a few All-Star games. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-03-03 14:00:00 | If you didn't hate Elvis Andrus, and he was eligible for your top 101, where would he rank? As a Rangers fan, I'm hoping the top 10. (Michael Jordan from TX) | I don't hate Elvis Andrus. That's a myth, but I can't say I'm not entertained by how worked up some get when I say he's not the greatest thing ever. He would not be in the top 10 for me. I think he's a very good player, I just don't think he is, or ever will be a true impact level one. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-03-04 13:00:00 | OK, so some sight that shall remain nameless rated Elvis Andrus as a better fantasy SS than Yunel Escobar. Is that that the most rediculous ranking you've seen? Or is there another that really blew you away? (biglou115 from Arkansas) | I can see why they would do it--they probably expect more power from Andrus than last year, and with his stolen bases and the Rangers lineup you can argue he'll add to a few categories, but I like Yunel more, so I don't buy that argument.
There has to be something more ridiculous out there though, since I can justify that whether I agree with it or not. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-14 16:00:00 | Since I don't know your area of expertise, I'll just ask a general question.
What do you think of the Rangers Rotation for next year? Harden, Feldman, Holland, Hunter, and one of Feliz, Harrison, McCarthy, Wilson, Hurley, or whoever. (Ira from North Texas) | Everyone in that rotation has their tragic flaw. I don’t know that me saying “Harden, if healthy…” adds anything to the discussion, but it’s all I have to say about him. Feldman has the good sense to keep his batted balls on the ground and to let Elvis Andrus do the dirrrty work. He’s the better of the bunch (assuming that Neftali Feliz is in the pen.) Holland caught some bad luck last year, but his peripherals still say “nothing special.” (Russell A. Carleton) |
| 2009-12-17 13:00:00 | "Jays got more back than the Twins did for Johan Santana (it would be hard to do worse, I think)."
As you note, that's setting the bar pretty low. Is that the worst trade of the last ten years? I can't think of any that are worse off the top of my head... (mattymatty2000 from philly, pa) | Only time will tell, but I think you can make strong cases for the Expos' acquisition of Bartolo Colon (Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips to Cleveland) and the Braves' acquisition of Mark Teixeira (Neftali Felix, Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia - yeah, I can spell it without looking - et al). Still, it's in the picture for the clinkers of note. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-12-09 13:00:00 | Who do you like better, Yunel Escobar or Elvis Andrus? (Matt from SD, CA) | Elvis, for the glove and youth. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-12-04 14:00:00 | Any thoughts on how special of a 2009 season Asdrubal Cabrera and Elvis Andrus had as very young shortstops with good-great defense and solid offense? ( Aaron from YYZ) | I think Cabrera is a little ahead of Andrus at this point but that Andrus will have the better career. I like both of them a lot. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-11-19 13:00:00 | In a keeper Strat-O-Matic league, would you take Elvis Andrus or Gordon Beckham? Assume the team's other left-side infielder is someone like Brendan Harris, who can start at SS or 3B as needed.
(Rex Little from Big Bear, CA) | The difference in their ages and position--the White Sox appear to be committed to the Cuban Shawon Dunston at shortstop--mean I'd take Andrus. Keeper leagues are about long-term value. I like Beckham a lot, but a long-term 1 at short with a decent bat is what you build around. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-13 14:00:00 | You were pretty critical of the decision to move Michael Young off of shortstop to make room for Elvis Andrus, arguing that Young's bat wouldn't play at third base. Young's bounceback year notwithstanding, do you think that the significant upgrade defensively at shortstop and third base made the switch worthwhile at the end of the day, or do you think the Rangers would have been better off living with Young's sub-par glove at short and dealing Andrus? (xxx from yyy) | I'm confident of the fact that, in this instance, history reflects that I was wrong, wrong, wrong. Props to Jon Daniels and company, props to Young for making himself a quality third baseman, and props to Andrus and what looks like an interesting future. Even if you let a little bit (or a lot) of Texas-related inflation out of Andrus' numbers, you have to like the upside given his age. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-10-06 13:30:00 | Elvis Andrus has been worth 2.9 WAR while anchoring a Ranger defense that completely transformed. How do you put Andrew Bailey (2.4 WAR) ahead of him in the ALROY race? (Conjunction from Dallas) | The great thing about the rookie classes in both leagues is that you can go a number of different ways with your picks. I like Andrus a lot and I know I certainly left myself open for criticism by not selecting him. However, I thought Bailey was outstanding all year in a role that many veterans have a difficult time handling. It's an interesting debate, which is one of the reasons we all love baseball so much. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-09-29 13:00:00 | With the CYA (Greinke) and the MVP (Mauer) awards pretty well settled who do you have for RoY?? (kcboomer from kc) | I'm sort of ambivalent. I imagine it will be Gordon Beckham, but I feel like you could make just as good a case for Andrew Bailey or Jeff Neimann. Nolan Reimold had a good year too, and I'm sure that some people will claim that Elvis Andrus helped the Rangers accomplish... accomplish... Oh, never mind. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-09-17 14:00:00 | I know you weren't quite as high on Elvis Andrus coming into the 2009 season as some other folks were, seeing him as a future Edgar Renteria rather than a future star -- has his performance this year changed your mind any? (Adam J. Morris from Houston, TX) | No. Renteria actually had a better year at 20, but then dropped off a bit. I think they're very similar players really. Andrus w/ more speed, Renteria with a more refine approach. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-09-07 13:00:00 | Doesn't the AL ROY almost have to be Elvis Andrus? He's the 8th most valuable SS (by WAR) in all of baseball (and the 9th best SS offensively by wOBA) (Aaron from YYZ) | Why use wOBA when EqA's testably more accurate? Referring to the following BP sortable-stats page, Andrus is the 11th best by EqA among the 27 MLB regulars at short, and 12th by EqR. Make it a matter of the AL, and he's seventh by EqR, and sixth by EqA. Decent work, certainly, and that's without getting into his value on defense. But then there's also Gordon Beckham, and a few other notables. Andrus' hot hitting in the second half certainly helps elevate his overall case.

| 2009-09-08 13:00:00 | I know you are not much of an awards guy. But what do you think the chances of Tommy Hunter winning AL ROY? Especially if the Tigers shut down Porcello to rest his arm, and Hunter wins all 4 starts down the stretch to finish with 11 wins? (Ira from Third base line) | Jackie Robinson Award! Say it with me, folks. By the way, why no love for Jeff Niemann, if we're talking about the AL's rookie hurlers? He's been worth more than twice what Porcello is. Hell, Hunter's already been worth more than Porcello in his 80+ innings. Elvis Andrus has been worth more than all of them though. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-09-08 13:00:00 | Pedro-Smoltz would be awesome, but I just don't see how Pedro gets a PS start :-( (Dave from PA) | Sad face.
Off topic, but since R.J. Anderson is harassing me via IM for talking up Niemann, I should clarify. I don't think Niemann is a great pitcher, or even close to deserving the line he's put up. But awards are for what you have accomplished, not for what you were supposed to do, so I don't mind recommending him for the AL's Jackie Robinson Award. Of course this is pointless because Elvis Andrus is the right choice anyways. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-08-25 13:00:00 | Elvis Andrus, Gordon Beckham, Nolan Reimold, maybe Rickey Romero, or Andrew Bailey...who you got as AL RoY? (Lincoln from Dallas) | Beckham, who just recently passed Andrus. It's very close.
I really like Gordon Beckham. He could win an MVP as a shortstop. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-07-15 14:00:00 | When you say you like Darwin Barney, you mean in a utility infield way right? I mean there's no way a guy with 0 secondary skills can be a starter. Or at least deserve to be a starter. (Jon from Rhode Island) | What is he's a 70 defender? Was good enough for Elvis Andrus. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-05-28 14:00:00 | What's the general assessment on Elvis Andrus' stock after a month and a half in the big leagues? Better than advertised, fluky so far, or more study required? (Aaron from YYZ) | Somewhere between A. and C. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-02-16 14:00:00 | Kevin, you placed Elvis Andrus lower than I think I've seen him anywhere else. Do you think he will struggle in his first year in the majors, or do you doubt he will ever be an above average major league shortstop? (bateman19 from boston ma) | I'd bet a ton of him struggling is THIS year he gets the big league shortstop job. I think he can be a plus defender who hits for average and runs well, but a lack of power or on-base skills keep him towards the bottom of the order. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-02-11 14:00:00 | Ignoring arbitration clock discussions, do you think letting Elvis Andrus start for all of 2009 before he is ready will make him a better player in 2010? Or is it better to let a young player like him get in more time at AAA with a late season call up? (ScotMartin from TX) | I think the Rangers know that they won't be competitive until 2010, so why not give Andrus a head start? I like the idea and they've got Vizquel to mentor him. Omar really can't play anymore but he knows how to play shortstop. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-01-26 14:00:00 | Based on a discussion I was having this morning, what is your view on Moustakas versus Tim Beckham as prospects? Would you trade either of them for Elvis Andrus, straight-up? (Stephanie from DC) | I like both of them quite a bit, and they're both very high, and close to each other in my Top 100 (which you'll all see soon). I wouldn't trade either for Andrus straight up -- I'd barely even consider it. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-01-26 14:00:00 | Alcides Escobar or Elvis Andrus? Who has more value in 4 years? (Birdfan01 from LA) | I'll take Escobar. I think they're pretty much equal offensively, and Escobar gets the nod with the glove. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-11-12 14:00:00 | Feeling any better about Elvis Andrus after his steady second half? (Joey Matschulat from Tyler, TX) | Another guy I'm not as high on as others. Decent average, great speed, no other secondary skills, good defense. He's almost Royce Clayton for me, but I also think Royce Clayton is underrated. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-08-20 13:00:00 | Looking at Elvis Andrus' stat line, I still can't tell whether he's moving past the 'holding his own despite being young for the level' stage or not. What do scouts say? (Tim from Portland, OR) | They're still mixed. I still don't like him as much as most. For me, he's plus defender, singles hitting shortstop with speed and no other secondary skills. So everyday SS who hits 7th or 8th -- I'm not too excited. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-08-20 13:00:00 | What do you think of Julio Borbon? He seems to be doing fairly good at the AA level in the Rangers system. thx (uptick from st. louis, mo) | For me, he's pretty much Elvis Andrus in center field. Good average, good defense, lot's of speed, no power, no walks. I don't know what to do with that really (and now to sound like the sheriff in No Country For Old Men), I surely don't. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-06-13 14:00:00 | If you don't see the Braves re-signing Teix, then do you see them trading him at the deadline? (JoshEngleman from Tamaqua, PA) | They gave up A LOT to get him, including Elvis Andrus and Matt Harrison, both of whom are considered very good prospects. If I were to give you my best guess, I don't think they'll move him b/c I don't think they'll get a lot. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't feel like you've seen a lot of players dealt at the deadline the last few years who were FAs to be/"rent a player types" who have gotten produced a lot in return. It seems like teams have been more inclined to "ride it out" even if the team isn't playing well b/c they get the compensatory draft pick. (Jon "Boog" Sciambi) |
| 2008-02-06 14:00:00 | If given the opportunity to obtain either of these young shortstops, which would you select; Carlos Triunfel or Elvis Andrus? (Or from Dallas) | Hmmm. It'd be a nice dilemma to have.
I think Triunfel will be the superior offensive player, but also carries more positional risk. I'm not privy to more information on Andrus than you all are, but my impression of Triunfel is that he's eventually going to move positions, perhaps to 3B. But that's always the tradeoff, right? A good rule of thumb is to always assume the rumors of a prospect down the defensive spectrum are true. You won't hit 100%, but you also won't keep some guy for four years on your keeper team, and have him turn into a mediocre 1B instead of a kick-ass catcher. (Gary Huckabay) |
| 2008-01-28 13:00:00 | After Brignac, who's the best SS prospect (who will actually stick at SS) in the minors? (charles from west hempstead, ny) | Probably Jed Lowrie, if you are of the opinion that he can stick at shortstop. I believe it, and while he might not be best up the middle, he could work there. And while I know he's not really popular, you can't argue with Elvis Andrus' potential. Minor league coaches still love this guy, and if nothing else, I guarantee he stays at shortstop. (Bryan Smith) |

| 2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | Elvis Andrus looks like a slick-fielding Abraham Lincoln. (Marc Normandin) |
