DateQuestionAnswer
2012-01-20 14:00:00KG, What kind of production are you expecting from Pedro Alvarez this year?
(BaseballNUT2009 from s.a. ca.)
If I knew that, I'd be rich, but I'm not very optimistic. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-30 13:00:00Have we reached the point where we can question if Neil Huntington is the right GM for the Pirates? The major league club is still terrible and while they spend money on the draft, this doesn't mean much if you continue to select the wrong players and/or can't develop them in the minor league system. He also has very little to show for the Jason Bay (his best trade asset)trade.
(Sasha from Texas)
It's very hard to judge a GM when he's trading a star, because almost inevitably he is not going to get good value back--you're moving something that has been established as good for things that are speculative, and by their nature speculative things often don't work out... Huntington's efforts would also look a whole lot better if Pedro Alvarez hadn't been such a bust to date, and few were second-guessing that signing at the time. (Steven Goldman)
2011-10-17 13:00:00I know you were very high on Pedro Alvarez before the 2008 draft. Do you still believe he will develop into an all-star player or has his stock really dropped in your eyes?
(Mary from Pittsburgh)
Really dropped. Has made few adjustments, body is an issue. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-10-04 13:00:00Is Pedro Alvarez busted for good? He just looked like he had zero pitch recognition this season.
(John from PA)
Not busted for good, but not the player the Pirates thought they were getting. Let's see if he has the #want necessary to climb to his projected levels. (Jason Parks)
2011-09-20 13:00:00Former GM Jim Bowden seems to be very certain that Pedro Alvarez will reach his ceiling... Going strictly by the numbers he's out of his mind - but yet I keep feeling like everytime he gets going, he goes down with an injury. Whats your take?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Once upon a time, my faith in Bowden's certainties was high, but when the bottom fell out of the market for a GM-targeted line of leather pants, that faith was shaken.

I haven't seen him play much this year, but Alvarez's stat line is of a man paddling backwards at a considerable clip. Injuries may be enough to give him a pass on this year, but he'll go into next season as a 24-year-old hacker who still has a whole lot to accomplish to become a league average third baseman. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-07-29 13:00:00I have Jesus Montero, Freddie Freeman, Kyle Blanks, and Pedro Alvarez in a dynasty... looming logjam at 1B? If they do all end up at first how would you rate them based on their bats alone?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Man, that's a fantastic softball team you have there. Risk-averse ranking: Freeman, Montero, Alvarez, Blanks. If you have a taste for risk, flip the first two. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-05-09 13:00:00What do you make of Pedro Alvarez so far? While he's still 'young', he's not that young and with his approach, he just seems so lost.
(Frank Vincent from Pittsburgh)
I definitely thought he'd be better by now, and do have questions about him ever reaching his ceiling. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-08 14:00:00Is Pedro Alvarez the next Carlos Lee?
(Tony from Albuquerque)
I'd take that if I were Pedro Alvarez -- Lee's had a nice career. (Ken Funck)
2011-03-02 13:00:00Christina, any breakout player/pitcher for the Bucs this year (pls give me some hope for this season!)?
(Frank from Vegas)
What, beyond seeing Pedro Alvarez settle in? Hrm... a breakout, eh? I think this is the year Ross Ohlendorf stops being just a nice guy to take a flyer on, and settles in as a good rotation regular, but that's more of a gut/expectation thing, not a worthwhile projection. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-11-09 14:00:00How soon do you think Pedro Alvarez will start posting 30/100 seasons? His September was sexy!
(Dave from Milton)
I do. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-09-21 13:00:00Marc, Any idea on what Pedro Alvarez's value will be next year in a 14-team keeper league? I can keep him in the 17th round, but not sure I want to slot 3rd base to him quite yet. His year hasn't been THAT impressive has it? Thanks for chatting.
(bctowns from Chicago, IL)
I like his potential as a hitter a lot, and I think he can slot in at first base sooner than later thanks to his bat. Keeping him in the 17th round could be a steal for you honestly, even if you aren't ready to start him at 3B in April. (Marc Normandin)
2010-09-13 13:00:00Hi Jay, I may be too late to respond, but YES I was talking only in the NL. It seems they have a ton this season with: Heyward, Posey, Logan Morrison, Stanton, Starlin Castro, Pedro Alvarez, Tabata, Strasburg, Chapman, Mike Minor, Leake, Ike Davis... all in the National League.
(Bobby from New York)
Ah, got it. That's a tough question for another day - there's a lot to like there, but we've already got less reason to be excited about Ike Davis, for one. What really matters is how these guys develop beyond year one, anyway. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-08-26 13:00:00Hi Marc, thanks for the chat. I'm trying to pick 5 keepers from this bunch: Hellickson, Heyward, Stanton, Aroldis Chapman, Phil Hughes, Pedro Alvarez, Jesus Montero, Neftali Feliz, Lincecum...Should I try to corner the young pitching market with Hughes, Hellickson, Chapman, Lincecum, Feliz or are the 2 20-year old OFs more valuable?
(cbelford from Chicago)
In real life, you can never have too much pitching. But in fantasy, you need to bet on the sure thing more often, because the reason you can never have too much pitching is due to the volatility of the performances and concerns over injuries. I am much more comfortable keeping the two 20 year old outfielders and Pedro Alvarez than by going all pitching. Heyward, Stanton, Alvarez, Feliz, Lincecum would be my five from your group. If you can make a trade by packaging some of the others together, I would explore it. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-01 14:00:00Whispers of Pedro Alvarez getting demoted back to AAA? Seems like a rash move, especially considering how streaky he can be. What are your thoughts on his future as the General of the Cavalry?
(Milby from San Francisco)
Still a big fan, and I agree that sending him down would be rash. It's not like the Pirates are going to win anything anyway, so why not have him learn on the job? (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-07-09 13:00:00What do you think of Pedro Alvarez the rest of the year, and as a keeper option for next year and the year after?
(Nick from NYC)
I like Alvarez in NL-only this year, but he's not a keeper in mixed leagues yet. Deep leagues though, he's someone to keep an eye on already, despite early struggles. (Marc Normandin)
2010-07-09 13:00:00Keeper League: Pedro Alvarez or Mike Stanton?
(Nickles from Dime Store, USA)
Mike Stanton. I was upset I missed out on him in one of my leagues, but Alvarez is still sitting there waiting for an owner like a sad puppy. I like both long-term, but Stanton could be special. (Marc Normandin)
2010-06-28 14:00:00They shoot pirates, don't they? Anything to look forward to with the 2010 Bucs so I don't do the same?
(frank from vegas)
Well, Pedro Alvarez is up, and while he's off to just a 4-for-35 start, he should be good enough to stick in the majors once he gets his bearings. Neil Walker is taking to the majors as well, and that's worth something, too. I'm less optimistic about Jose Tabata and Brad Lincoln, but they're not hopeless. Andrew McCutchen is a damn fine ballplayer and Lastings Milledge is coming around. It's going to get better. Not immediately, but they're on the right track. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-06-10 13:00:00Who gets called up first: Carlos Santana or Pedro Alvarez?
(Lane from Austin, TX)
Pedro Alvarez will be called up first, but I don't think Santana is that far behind. I wish Santana would get called up now so he could move from my bench and replace Lou Marson in my deep AL-only (just like real life!) (Marc Normandin)
2010-06-02 13:00:00Please rank the following in the order in which you think they will make their big league debuts: Mike Moustakas; Pedro Alvarez; Logan Morrison; Freddie Freeman; Madison Bumgarner; Jeremy Hellickson. Does anyone in this group make a significant fantasy impact in 2010?
(Chillin' from Waiver Wire)
I'm not terribly good at this kind of thing, but what the heck:

Alvarez, Moustakas, Hellickson, Morrison, Bumgarner, Freeman

I think the first three will see at least a sprinkling of big league time this year. The others I'm not so sure about. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-05-28 14:00:00 How do the holes in Stanton's swing compare to some other similar sluggers? Does he have the potential to hit with significantly more contact than a guy like Ryan Howard or Mark Reynolds, or even fellow prospect Pedro Alvarez?
(roberto21pops8 from CT)
He's always going to have big strikeout numbers, but he's also the one prospect in baseball most likely to hit 50 home runs in a season. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-05-24 14:00:00How do you assess Neal Huntington's job in Pittsburgh so far?
(Charles from New York City)
Not very differently than how I would have a year ago, or six months ago. Pedro Alvarez will arrive shortly. The organization has a long way to go, but they're more competitive now, and they're certainly creative enough in terms of trying any number of things with their players. Getting worked up over the returns as far as what was received for breaking up a bad team would have been a mistake; sure enough, acquiring a collection of washouts and mid-list prospects hasn't yielded massive returns. If there's cause for massive disappointment, it's that Andy LaRoche flopped, but LaRoche was a prospect nobody saw flopping this badly, so it's hard to fault Huntington the decision to acquire him. I'd still fidget over the decision to deal McLouth as early as he did, but that may not have been entirely in his hands. Basically, I remain a cautious optimist where the Pirates are concerned. I cautious, patient optimist. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-05-25 13:00:00Hey, John. Thanks for the chat. I know you're not the prospect guy, but I assume you still have a pipeline to the Buccos. Are they concerned about Pedro Alvarez' relatively lackluster performance this year? Or can we assume he's up in June regardless? Or both?
(Rob from Alaska)
Everything I'm hearing _ and the numbers bear this out _ is that lefties are eating him alive, especially those with decent breaking pitches. The Pirates didn't spend $6.3 million for a platoon player, thus I don't see him coming to the majors until he shows he can at least hold his own against lefties. (John Perrotto)
2010-05-25 13:00:00Which of the following prospects will "miraculously" be deemed ready for the majors in a week or so: Carlos Santana, Pedro Alvarez, Stephen Strasburg, Buster Posey, Desmond Jennings?
(tommybones from brooklyn)
Stephen Strasburg, for sure. (John Perrotto)
2010-03-30 13:00:00Pedro Alvarez...how much does he contribute this year (if any)?
(Tim from DC)
He really needs to cut the Ks. I'm tentatively expecting him to be up in June or July, but if he can't get his contact issues under control, that might be a very optimistic estimate. (Shawn Hoffman)
