2009-09-10 13:00:00I am a reference librarian and was recently asked if there were more sidearmers in the 80s. (Actually the questioner asked about sideways pitchers.) I don't recall this but it may be true. The discussion came around to mechanics. Is pitching sidearm easier on the pitcher than overhand? To my mind the arm strain would be pretty close but sidearm would seem to be easier on the shoulder.
(Steve N from Delaware)		The strain is different, but I'm not sure about "easier". There's a sample size question and I'm not sure if we have much reliable data on sidearmers. The only guy I know has been analyzed is Chad Bradford and he is *not* a sidearm/submariner. (Will Carroll)

2008-11-07 13:00:00Andy MacPhail has been quoted as saying not to get"our expectations" too high in terms of the player to be named later in the Chad Bradford trade. Most of us in Baltimore are reading that as the guy will get will never see the light of day in the Majors. There's some saved salary here. But is it really worthwhile to save a couple million dollars at the cost of a very useful reliever, one who added a lot, in fact, to Tampa Bay's pennant drive?
(Playwright22 from Baltimore)		Absolutely. Bradford might be worth a win or two. Might. That doesn't matter. If you pick the right guy, maybe you get four or five wins over a period of years from a reliever, a bench guy, a spot starter. You always cash in the veteran chips when you're in the Orioles' shoes, even if you're getting back the 15th-best guy in another organization.

The extreme application of this is the Twins a couple years back, when they got back two zeroes for Luis Castillo. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-21 15:00:00I've had the woman pitcher argument with a friend of mine that played collegiate softball. Except, I was the one saying that a woman could pitch in MLB and she said no way. My theory is that the first woman pitcher will be relief specialist, Chad Bradford type? The first woman pitcher isn't going to be a former tennis player, she'll be softball player, so becoming a submariner would seem to make more sense...

2008-07-09 13:00:00Can you explain how submariners like Chad Bradford are able to generate so much velocity? Is it really still a "whip" action, but flipped over? When I try it for fun, it just doesn't flow.
