2016-02-25 12:00:00 (link to chat)In what order do you think the following pitchers make their MLB debuts: Glasnow, Giolito, Snell, Urias? I'm assuming Berrios would be #1... Thanks!
(e-man from Connecticut)
Yeah, Berrios first, though is Snell signs the extension the Rays may just have him break camp. Seems like something they would do. I don't think Dusty goes through with taking Giolito north in the pen (seems like something he would do, but not so much Mike Rizzo). Urias is the wild card here, given how his innings have been managed so far, if you bring him up at any point as a starter he will have a huge year-over-year jump. Not a Verducci Effect guy, but it's unknown how he handles a major league workload right now.

Let's say Snell, Glasnow, Urias, Giolito. I'm bad at this game too though. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2015-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better? Trea Turner or Wilmer Difo? Mike Rizzo may have to answer that question at some point.
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
I think Difo is a better player all around, but I like both players. Turner's swing can get long but I think there is enough to work with there. The speed/defense are plenty enough to stick at SS.

My colleague C.J. Wittmann has you covered on Difo. His report is about as up to date as you can get: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_bat.php?reportid=203 (Tucker Blair)
2014-12-18 15:00:00 (link to chat)I would like to hear your effusive praise for Mike Rizzo. Thanks
(Charlie from Rockville)
I've loved his offseason, and legitimately can't think of a trade that he's lost. I'm sure there's one in there, but it's not coming to mind, which says something. I love love loved the Bostick acquisition, and while he's not an impact talent, I think he's a starting caliber player on a good team. Maybe more 2nd division guy than first, but even good teams have those guys in starting spots. I haven't been the biggest Turner supporter, but then I saw him on a bad day. It was cold out, and it was early in the year and maybe he just didn't show it so I keep my mind open there, but I've long been a Joe Ross supporter. Really nice adds for the price of a talented guy in Souza, who just didn't have a spot on this team. he was a great 4th outfielder, but Michael Taylor can fill that role as well. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know you will discuss the Lobaton-Karns trade in more detail later, but I am interested in your assessment of Mike Rizzo overall. He seems to preferentially partner with whom I would consider "smart GMs" in many of his trades, concentrating especially on Oakland.
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
I wrote about Rizzo's legacy during the season.

I'm not sure I'd read into the Rizzo trades with Friedman and Beane too much. Think of it this way: when those GMs make a trade, they're usually trading higher-salaried veterans, right? Well someone has to acquire the players, and that someone is usually a large-payroll team. Add in that the Nationals have had some solid prospects who they were willing to move, and I think it could be that straightforward.

Besides, the Nationals are into sabermetrics. I don't know if they're in on the same level as the A's and Rays, but they're definitely into this stuff. Same with the Angels and a few other teams that might surprise people based on their reputations. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of Jordan Zimmermann (my brother was his roommate in college!) is he trade bait at some point next year? Nats have a lot of money going and a lot of pitchers too, maybe someone thinks he's a solid two on a contender and grabs him? (Cubs, Brewers, etc)
(Colin from Chicago)
He is a solid two on a contender, but that's the Nationals and it's right now. That would be a shame if he happened to be the odd-man out when it comes to contract extensions, but the Lerner's have tons of money. They are among the games richest owners and have given Mike Rizzo the go ahead to spend a lot of it. Even with their terrible contract situation, I don't see the Nats losing too many players because of financial restrictions. (Jeff Moore)
2013-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you're Mike Rizzo, what should you do with the infield this offseason? Leave as is, platoon LaRoche/Moore at first, move Zim to first and sign ____ to play 2b or 3b?
(NatsReview from Bethesda)
Zim/Rendon at the corners. Go find a 2B somewhere. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Here's a twist to the DeJesus "club option" question. Considering Mike Rizzo stated that the Nationals will likely be receiving a 22 yr old LHP from the Rays farm system, if those prospects are out of the Matt Spann/Jeff Ames/Enny Romero/Felipe Rivero group...do you believe that the Rays would really opt-out after giving up such a promising, young LHP prospect?
(jlarsen from Chicago, IL)
too much money for DeJesus IMO, especially for Tampa (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which teams do you feel had the best and worst offseason?
(Cole B. from Brooklyn)
I'll take the Nationals for the best and the Diamondbacks for the worst and it really boils down to Mike Rizzo continuing to operate under the plan of short-term, high-upside deals (like Dan Haren), while Kevin Towers didn't seem to have a coherent strategy. All of us who are baffled by Arizona's revamped outfield might be proven wrong, but it's difficult to see how the D'backs are a better team now than they were in October. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking as a former GM, how would you approach the current position that Mike Rizzo is in with Mike Morse? He is in final year of his contract, basically positionless due to horrible fielding skills and other players ahead blocking him at the 2 positions that he can "play" at. However, he's stated that he's against being a DH. Most of the teams interested in Morse are in need of DHs and he doesn't have a no-trade clause to block any trade. As Rizzo, do you deal him for a left-handed reliever or high-upside pitching prospect(See Mark DeRosa Indians/Cubs trade for similar deal) and let new team decide how to approach Morse's distaste towards DHing?
(jlarsen from waukegan)
Keep in mind that he doesn't have to make his move today, but taking on a salary is something that has to be taken into consideration versus the remaining free agents. As you go deeper into the off-season then into ST, budgets tighten up. Sometimes you like the player, but cannot maneuver your payroll enough to make a move. (Dan Evans)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I don't see anyone close to a replacement for Werth available right now. Can the Nats risk trying to get by without him? Who might they go after coming up to the trade deadline?
(dianagram from Value Over Replacement Grit)
Well, Mike Rizzo says that he's not looking to make a trade, which could mean either that he's not looking to make a trade or that he's desperately looking to make a trade but doesn't want to say that for fear of driving up asking prices. I'm actually writing a BP/ESPN article now on lopsided teams like the Nats that excel at either run scoring or run preventing but don't do both, so maybe after that I'll have more insight on whether they can get by with a Nady/Bernadina platoon for three months. One confession I should make here: I'm absolutely awful at coming up with potential trades. Whenever I have to propose one, I look at basically every person playing baseball and ask myself whether he's available or not and why, and which teams might want him. It's the most inefficient process ever. Can't wait for the trade deadline!

By the way, Sam Miller just emailed me to say that he's working on the Bonifacio article, so look forward to seeing that sometime in the next day or two. I wonder how many more times I can name-drop BP staff members before the end of the chat. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-05-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Nationals find themselves in a position that would be a little uncomfortable if it didn't contrast so favorably with any decision they have had the past 7 years. Chien-Ming Wang is going to come back from the DL, and find Ross Detwiler in his spot with a 3-1 record and 1.59 ERA. Strasburg, Gonzalez and Zimmermann aren't going anywhere, and Edwin Jackson is only having a lesser year by comparison. We are told Wang can't pitch out of the bullpen. What can Mike Rizzo do?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
Not pitch Chien-Ming Wang? I'm not sure Chien-Ming Wang's health is any more relevant to the Nationals right now than, like, Dick Cheney's health. (Sam Miller)
