DateQuestionAnswer
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Give me one good reason to watch a Yankee game before October 6th.
(Paul from Boston)
Well, my rule of thumb is that any game in which Austin Kearns could appear is a game worth watching. (Eric Seidman)
2010-06-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)what do you make of carlos santana's hot start? at first glance, anyone could do this well in so few ABs. at second glance, he has almost twice as many walks as strikeouts.
(stately from atl)
He's off to a tremendous start, but I don't expect him to put up an 1100 OPS. That said, he's got a great batting eye, and has more walks than strikeouts in each of his past three minor league seasons. He's also mostly been batting in front of Austin Kearns, who's been slumping, so i'd guess it's a case of a hot hitter being pitched around, at least some of the time. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there one player you've always thought was just going to be awesome (who had some MLB experience), but just never put it together?
(Maria from Philly)
Austin Kearns. He fools me like every year. I don't get it. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Yikes, Nats just sent Dukes down to AAA. They really might be the worst organization in baseball.
(Tim from Wash DC)
Oh, man, that just hurts. And Austin Kearns gets to keep playing Gilligan to Dunn's Skipper? That's just wrong. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-04-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)So far this season, Austin Kearns is hitting .255/.397/.553. If he keeps this up, would someone want to take him off of the Nats' hands? What could they expect in return?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Perhaps but if the Nationals trade him they won't get a high-level prospect. Maybe a couple of B-listers. Most people in baseball feel Kearns' ship has sailed. (John Perrotto)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Am I crazy or are the Nationals pretty close to being a contender? Their lineup isn't bad, with a nice middle of Milledge/Zimmerman/Dukes/Dunn. With J. Zimmermann, Strasburg and maybe a FA starter signing, they'll have a good core of talent.
(Tex Premium Lager from Hoboken, NJ)
They've got the makings of a promising nucelus, but they've got to undo the damage wrought by Ol' Leatherpants. First and foremost, they need to turn that absurd stockpile of outfielders into some other usable parts around the diamond by trading two players from the Nick Johnson/Josh Willingham/Austin Kearns group. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Austin Kearns over Elijah Dukes or Josh Willingham? What is Manny Acta/Mike Rizzo thinking?
(dwiest12 from NoVA)
I think Marc hit the nail on the head today in his piece; economic factors and a need to see if there really is a sucker born every minute, and how relentless population pressures might necessarily put one in a GM job somewhere, so that said sucker might go all Bowden on the notion of employing Austin Kearns... it's not the best gig for a busker on the make, but you can't blame the Nats for trying. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were Manny Acta, who would you play in the of/1b logjam? And what would you do with Austin Kearns to keep him busy during baseball games?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Ok, this is admittedly a crazy idea ... I'd see which of those OFers could play 2B. Then when I had a fly ball pitcher on the mound, I'd play that guy. There's a level at which the increased offense would offset the drop in defense, but I'm not sure whether any of them could make that balance or be an overall improvement over ... well, who, Anderson Hernandez? That's not a really high bar, is it? (Will Carroll)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)80s analogy of the day: Adam Dunn: Austin Kearns = Eric Davis: Kal Daniels
(DrManhattan from NY, NY)
You looked good in the Watchmen trailer, Doc. (Will Carroll)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Joe, the Reds have announced that Daryl Thompson will make his major league debut tomorrow against the Yankees. Two questions: What do you think of aggressive promotion of young pitchers who are dominant in the minors? Who would've thunk that the Reds may yet end up with the better half of the Austin Kearns deal?
(Rick from Chicago)
I believe it was Gary Huckabay who proffered the idea that a guy who can pitch in the majors needs to be doing so regardless of age. (I'm paraphrasing.) These guys implode at all levels, so you might as well have him helping your team. I also think the level of health care and coaching is highest in the majors, so why not have a guy like Thompson (or Kershaw, or Chamberlain) benefitting from that? As long as workload is managed--and my god, is workload managed these days--it's a reasonable idea to promote quickly. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)You're Trader Jim Bowden (minus the leather pants) - What deals do you make in the next 2 months? Can you find a taker for Lopez or Guzman? Please tell me you won't trade Johnson.
(macman from d.c.)
Lay off of Trader Jim--leather's great material, and there's nothing wrong with working it into your wardrobe. Actually, Johnson's exactly the player he should deal, in terms of the talent such a trade might yield, because Chris Marrero will eventually get here, and because nobody's going to bite on Dmitri Young. Beyond that, he doesn't really have that many chits that might draw interest; it isn't like somebody's going to go wild for Saul Rivera. Maybe one of the veteran catchers yields a C prospect at the deadline (once they heal up), and maybe somebody decides they just have to have Austin Kearns. I wouldn't bet on either. F-Lop just doesn't fit most team's needs--everyone recognizes he can't really play a good short, and there are people who can hit about as well starting at second base all over Triple-A. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Did you know Lastings Milledge's #1 comp is Rondell White, who was born in Milledgeville, Georgia? Marc Normandin would have Lastings a top 10 fantasy OF this year if he could be assured of 600 plate appearances. What does your crystal ball say?
(Tim from Portland, OR)
I think that from among the quartet of talented outfielders the Nats have to squeeze into three regular lineup slots, Milledge is the one I'd peg as the one most likely to have the most plate appearances. However, in saying that, I'm taking Austin Kearns' checkered injury history into account. I think it's safe to bet that Milledge gets at least 500 PA. (Christina Kahrl)
