DateQuestionAnswer
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)Does Max Fried have the potential to move into the top 25 with a strong 2nd half?
(Nils from CT)
That seems high. Securely in the top 50 with a rebound. (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Love your articles, thanks for hosting another chat! What SP prospect do you think has more long term value/projects better, Max Fried or Kohl Stewart?
(dzemens from Michigan)
Thanks! I think Stewart has more potential but it's a tight one between the two. (Mauricio Rubio)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat Jason! Who do you think you'll rate higher in your Top 10 prospect list for the Padres: Matthew Wisler or Max Fried? Who has the higher ceiling?
(Nick from Williamsburg)
Wisler will rank higher; Fried has a slightly higher ceiling. Hedges is the alpha of that system, though. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Max Fried's status changed at all or can he still be one of the top LHP prospects in the game very soon?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Hasn't changed for me. He's in the developmental process. Bumps and bruises along the way. I like the arm. He's not a monster in the Kershaw or Price mold, but he is going to develop into a good major league arm down the line. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Matt Wisler now a top 100 (or even top 50) guy? Has he surpassed Max Fried?
(Jeff from Bay Area)
Top 100 for sure. He was on the border of our mid-season top 50 rankings at BP this year. So I imagine he'll be in that discussion again this offseason. As far as passing Fried, I think Fried may have a tick higher ceiling but there's an argument to be made about Wisler's polish and likelihood of becoming a no. 3 starter. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who in the Padres system do you see as a potential number 1 ace going ahead towards the future?
(Brad from San Diego)
Don't see a future ace in the system, although they are loaded with impressive arms. Highest ceiling is probably LHP Max Fried. (Jason Cole)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason! What kind of pitcher do you see Max Fried being in the majors? Does he have the ceiling to become a monster front line starter? Thanks!
(Nathan from Oakland)
I don't see a frontline starter, but I do like the arm and the ceiling is high. He has a very good fastball from the left side, and big curveball with a lot of depth. He needs to have sharp command to get swings on a pitch like that or he will be in trouble. I've seen the CH flash as well, and I think a mid-rotation (or better) ceiling is very possible. (Jason Parks)
2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Max Fried be the top lefty propsect in baseball by this time next year? Do you like him or Guerrieri better?
(Scout from San Diego)
Guerrieri by just a little bit, and yeah, Fried has a chance to be that. When you think about it, so many of the top arms in MiLB right now are right-handers. Fried has big potential, and he's doing well for himself this season. (Jason Cole)
2013-05-30 13:30:00 (link to chat)How high is Max Fried's ceiling? Could he be a monster? Thanks for the chat!
(George from Tampa)
My pleasure, George. Thanks for coming out and joining me! Fried has some crazy potential and could be a frontline starter when all is said and done. He's going to be cruising up prospect lists as this season goes along. (Mark Anderson)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)When all is said and done, will Max Fried end up the better pitcher than Lucas Giolito?
(Asking For a Friend from Chicago)
Probably not. Giolito could be a dangerous individual. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where does Max Fried end the year? Start next year?
(Jeff from San Juan)
They don't need to rush him. He could stay in Low-A all season and start next year in Double-A. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you seen Robert Stephenson or Max Fried? Thoughts? Thanks for chat.
(stevenpsu78 from york, pa)
I saw Stephenson during extended spring training last year (Parks saw him in camp this year), and I saw Fried during AZL last year and again this year in camp. My look at Stephenson was quick, but he showed a big fastball (93-94-ish then, it has since jumped) with serious late life. I got a one-inning look at Fried in camp. You have to like the delivery, long limbs, and all that. He sat 90-92 but popped 94 when needed with excellent feel for his curveball. The total package is just a little rough around the edges (there's nothing wrong with that, considering he's just out of high school), but everything you want to see in a big young lefty is there. (Jason Cole)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Carlos Santana and Max Fried for Billy Hamilton and George Springer. Which side of the trade would you rather be on?? Thanks!
(Josh from Boulder)
Carlos Santana and Fried. (Jason Cole)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Brandon asked about under the radar guys in A ball... thoughts on Max Fried?
(Patty from NJ)
Fried is anything but under the radar at this point, but I'm a huge, huge fan. Think he'll be the top left-handed pitching prospect in the minors by the end of the year. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)took over a clunker in a dynasty league and decent SP is non-existant on the wire. was able to trade for and pick up some SP prospects (archer, gausman, taillon and cingrani). any other young guys i should target? just missed out on wheeler. my trade chips are ellsbury, morse and papelbon.
(phin from Milwaukee)
Target the next wave of potential studs. Max Fried, Aaron Sanchez, Archie Bradley and Taylor Guerrieri are all potential top-25 prospects next year. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)How much did you see of Max Fried this spring? Any new thoughts from the observations?
(JoeTetreault from Carrollton, TX)
I think I saw three starts, which is quite a bit given my schedule. He looked sharp each time. The delivery is very easy and repeatable; he worked 89-93 with ease and could get more when he wanted it; the CB is a legit plus pitch with a big break; the CH flashes plus potential. He's a very advanced arm for his age. I was impressed. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Max Fried? Strong start to the year.
(nubber from nubville)
I adore Fried, but it will take a while. I'm looking forward to following his progress in a way that I haven't since probably Mat Latos came through the Padres system. (Geoff Young)
2013-03-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is the Max Fried comparison to Kershaw legit or is that just because they were both prep lefty's? How do their curveball's compare?
(padremurph from San Diego)
It's probably the tall lefty prep thing. Comps are often based on silly stuff (and way too many are race/nationality based) Reports on Fried's curveball are excellent. I'm yet to see him myself so I can't really compare him to Kershaw. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Enjoying SP Guide--great material. 5x5 ten team dynasty: 15 keeper and 10 minors. Spent couple years prospecting: who are the gold nuggets and who are the fool's gold? Jose Fernandez, Jameson Taillon, Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Kyle Zimmer, Max Fried, Lucas Giolito. Thank you
(nictaclacta from phoenix)
You've got lots of potential gold. If I **knew** who was fool's gold out of that, I'd have a much different job. I can tell you who I love from that group and it's Fernandez. I've always been a Taillon guy. Very excited to see full seasons out of Gausman and Zimmer. Btw, no mention of Bundy isn't because of any dislike, but rather bc he speaks for himself. He looks like a future star. (Paul Sporer)
2013-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Max Fried have #1 starter potential?
(Shawn from Snow Storm)
Shawn, Jason Parks puts Fried's ceiling at no. 2, which is special. Of course, it's a long way from here to there. He'll need more than 18 innings to show us what, exactly, he is. (Geoff Young)
2013-01-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who's the better pitcher in 5 years: Max Fried or Kevin Gausman?
(Jon from Kentucky)
What's up, Jon?

Everything I've read about Fried is very impressive, but Gausman is probably the safer choice as a college draftee. Again, this is just going off of what I've read; that might be a fun debate for our prospect team. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your assessment of Kevin Gausman, Max Fried, and Kyle Zimmer? Who has the most upside? Thanks.
(Jacob from San Diego)
Jacob, I haven't seen any of the pitchers in person so I'm going off second-hand info here. I've heard a ton of good things about Fried, but it wouldn't surprise me if, in five years, either Zimmer or Gausman is viewed as the best pitcher of the trio. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)How good is Max Fried? Saw him against my son's high school team this year and was easily the best HS pitcher I have ever seen in Southern California.
(Ida from Pasadena, CA)
Hi Ida, thanks for joining us today. I haven't seen Fried myself but I've heard great things. I think the Padres top 10 prospects list is coming soon. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which of the top arms in last year's draft do you feel will experience the most success at the big league level? Max Fried, Kevin Gausman, or Kyle Zimmer? Thanks for the chat!
(Bill from San Diego)
Bill, nobody can know! There is no value added in my opinion. I am sorry to give such a lousy answer to this question, but there is absolutely no information that is publicly available that could ever answer this question in a satisfactory way, and even the very smartest people can't predict much. Brandon Beachy wasn't drafted. (Sam Miller)
2012-11-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were to redraft the 2012 class, how would you round out the top 10?? Thanks!
(Derek from Kansas City)
Thanks for participating, Derek! I think it is a little too early to reshuffle the deck on the 2012 draft, as until players get into a full season you're not sure of how well they will adjust to the pro game. I am a huge fan of Max Fried. Keep in mind that the new CBA rules were involved for the first time also. (Dan Evans)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I've gotten lucky enough to see Max Fried on more than occasion and he made me #wet. Have you heard any reports on him?
(Kevin from NY)
I've seen two reports, so small sample. The reports were mixed; one source wasn't all that impressed with the FB. It's very early. I look forward to seeing him soon. (Jason Parks)
