2013 Parker, Colorado's first-round pick in 2010 out of Clemson, improved on a strong pro debut last year, increasing his power and cutting his K/BB in half while moving up a level. A pitched ball broke his hand in the season's second game, causing him to miss 33 games. His power was slow to return. Parker's slugging percentage didn't climb above .400 for good until June 12, after which he abused California League pitchers, knocking 16 homers in his final 55 games. A torn ligament in his left thumb at season's end required surgery, keeping him out of the Arizona Fall League. Parker must hit at every level, as he is strictly a corner outfielder.
2012 Parker, Colorado's first-round pick out of Clemson in 2010, showed plenty of power in his pro debut at Low-A Asheville. Part of this is due to his home park, which is conducive to home runs and which is where he hit 16 of his 21 bombs, but he is not a creation of his environment. The former college quarterback drives the ball to all fields and has decent on-base skills, although he could stand to make contact a bit more often. If he does that, Parker could put up scary numbers at Coors Field as early as 2013.
2011 The Rockies have a fetish for quarterbacks due to the combination of leadership and athleticism the position demands. Todd Helton (first round, 1995) backed up Peyton Manning at Tennessee, Seth Smith (second, 2004) held the clipboard for Manning's younger brother, Eli, at Mississippi, and Matt Holliday (seventh, 1998) was one of the top high school quarterbacks in the nation (it took a nearly-seven-figure bonus to prevent him from taking snaps at Oklahoma State). The Rockies even drafted Michael Vick out of Virginia Tech in the 30th round of the 2000 draft despite the fact that he hadn't played baseball since high school. Colorado continued the trend in 2010 by taking North Carolina State signal-caller Russell Wilson in the fourth round and Clemson freshman Parker in the first. Parker wasn't ready to give up football, but ultimately signed for $1.4 million with a stipulation that he could return to school for his sophomore year. During the spring, he was one of the best power hitters in college baseball, slugging 20 home runs in 247 at-bats while also leading the Clemson Tigers in walks. That's a classic corner-outfield profile, but, ironically, his average throwing arm could limit him to left field, at least until he stops throwing the baseball like it's a football.
