BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 A borderline fifth starter candidate entering the year, Tepesch started the season in the minors, but then had his option reversed due to inflammation in the ulnar nerve (elbow). Rehab was attempted, but it turned out that he had thoracic outlet syndrome, a tightening of the nerve bundle in the technically titled shoulder-armpit area. It required surgery and ended his year. Former inductees into the TOS club include Chris Young (good news!), Shaun Marcum (bad news!) and Jaime Garcia (news still pending!). Blood clotting is a potential outcome, so Tepesch's recovery from what can be a life-threatening condition trumps any concern over whether or not he will ever make it back onto the mound.
2015 In this new age of low-contact baseball, Tepesch was truly a throwback in 2014. Unlike in clothes or cars, that's not a good thing. His 10 percent strikeout rate was the worst in baseball among pitchers who threw at least 100 innings. With his sinker-slider tendencies and pitch-to-contact style, it's a surprise he's not a member of the Twins' organization along with his Missouri teammate Kyle Gibson. Tepesch is likely to be in the running for the no. 5 starter spot in Texas, but if the Rangers want to be competitive, he's a much better fit as a "break glass in case of emergency" guy they can keep around in either Triple-A or the bullpen.
2014 Tepesch, a Matthew Modine lookalike signed to an above-slot deal as a 14th-round pick in 2010, was pressed into duty as the Rangers' fifth starter out of spring training because of injuries to his colleagues, and he did better than one would expect from a guy with just 14 starts above A-ball. Tepesch is a strike thrower who gets raves for maintaining his poise and calm demeanor on the mound, no matter what the situation, but his limited repertoire made him vulnerable as the lineup turned over—he allowed a .472 OPS to batters in their first plate appearance of the game, but an 1.198 OPS in their third trip. Tepesch will be in the mix for the fifth starter job in 2014, but more likely will start the season back in Triple-A for some necessary grooming.
2013 A big righty who pounds the zone with quality stuff, Nick Tepesch was solid between High- and Double-A last season while featuring a low-to-mid-90s fastball, a plus cutter, and a rapidly improving curveball.

2014-08-06 16:30:00 (link to chat)How many pitches would Nick Tepesch have to throw before he struck out 2000-2003 era Barry Bonds? And how many Dingers would Bonds have hit before three strikes went past him?
(Frazer from (Exeter, UK))
Wonderful question. Does the at-bat start over if/when Bonds hits a dinger? If that's the case, I could see 40+ pitches. (Cespedes Family BBQ)
2014-05-07 17:00:00 (link to chat)Texas just called up Scott Baker...How much more does Nick Tepesch have to show before he gets the call?
(Chad from OKC)
Probably not much more. I could see him pitching another couple of months in the minors and being a midseason call-up if the Rangers have a need. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)What did you think of Nick Tepesch's outing for fantasy purpose's, had him in 3 league.s last night, seems to be a Westbrook type groundballer, perfect for Arlington,do you think he can stick around awhile?
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
Like a lot of fantasy experts, I had no idea who this guy was until the Rangers announced that he was going to be the team's fifth starter. I was skeptical that the Rangers were pushing him because they didn't want to get sucked into the Kyle Lohse sweepstakes, but a number of Rangers' watchers - most notably Adam Morris of Lone Star Ball - were impressed with Tepesch's improved composure and presence on the mound. He's a rookie pitcher and certainly will take his lumps, but his debut gives him the opportunity to stick around and possibly not get demoted once Matt Harrison comes back. Tepesich could be a #3-4 starter at his peak. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have had injuries to my SP's and need replacements for the next moth or so. The important stats in my league are Quality Starts and K's. Which two of Dillon Gee, Nick Tepesch, Luis Mendoza, Kevin Slowley, Bartolo Colon, and Roberto Hernandez should I pick up? I am leaning toward Hernandez and Gee.
(Todd from Dallas)
I wish I knew. Gun to my head, please don't put a gun to my head. Then, after you put your gun away, I'd probably go with Colon and whomever you're feeling after that. (Matthew Kory)
