BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Considering the concerns over his approach at the plate and his arm-bar swing mechanics leading up to the season, paired with general Phillies-hitting-prospect cynicism, it seemed entirely possible that Franco was primed to bust more than bust out. Instead, he was an almost singular bright spot on offense and, despite his up-and-down defensive tendencies, appears to be nestling in as a key transitional figure for the club moving forward. The long view would suggest that his peak is close and destined to be short, as a lot of his success is premised on his supersonic bat speed, not typically something that ages well, but there's growing optimism that 2016 will hold big things for Franco, regardless of whether he stays at third or moves across the diamond to first.
2015 Dig up a time capsule from a year ago, and you'll find such mysteries of the past as an archaic third-generation Amazon Kindle (oooooh) and a ticket for the old-timey movie Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (ahhhhhh) and an article written by somebody suggesting Maikel Franco might actually break camp with the Phillies' third base job (huh?). Instead, the 21-year old spent the bulk of his year in Triple-A as the youngest full-time hitter in the league, which certainly makes his production there more impressive but also reinforces how unrealistic it was to expect him in Philadelphia last April. (For that matter, he's no lock to start this year in Philadelphia, either.) Franco is still one of the brightest prospects in an admittedly thin system; the bat is lightning quick and thunder loud, though his guess-and-rip approach can look ugly, too. He isn't going to be an instant savior for the Phillies, but he will give fans something more exciting to watch than this old copy of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
2014 Franco will enter 2014 as the no. 1 prospect in the Phillies' system. Admittedly, it's a weak system, but that doesn't diminish Franco's luster. He got his first taste of life above A-ball in mid-June and, at just 20, he circled his competition. The Phillies haven't had a homegrown third baseman since Scott Rolen, plodding through the years since with Placido Polanco, David Bell, Pedro Feliz, Polanco again and Michael Young. Cody Asche put a claim on the starting job with a strong second-half debut, but the position ultimately is Franco's to lose in 2015 and beyond. He'll start the 2014 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
2013 Philadelphia has an impressive group of third-base prospects, but none of them is ready to take the reins, so Michael Young was brought in as a one-year stopgap. Franco has the highest ceiling of the group, though he is a long way away. His defensive skills are evident, but it's his offense that could make him a star. He has an aggressive approach, but it's controlled aggression, so he avoids too much swing-and-miss. His power showed up in a big way last year with 49 extra-base hits, and many scouts see him developing even more. With the defense in place, he is left to focus on turning the raw hit and power tools into the plus assets they can be.
2012 An 18-year-old Dominican first baseman, Maikel Franco has big upside but little in the way of results; the glove and arm lead the bat in development.

2016-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Odds of Maikel Franco sticking at 3B once Ryan Howard goes away next year?
(dianagram from VORGVILLE)
Not as good as I'd like, which is a shame, because the arm's great and the hands are plenty good, but holy God is he slow. You can be slow and play third base, but Franco's at least testing the limits of how slow you can be. (Michael Baumann)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Mike, I need big time help here. I'm so lost on who to keep. I've made a couple bad moves that just seem to keep snowballing after drafting yoan last year and trying to send him down to my minor leagues (the guys with the top 2 waiver spots wouldn't budge and still won't). 12 team H2H points league... Which 8 do I keep??? Yoan, schwarber, Carlos Gomez, Franco, Carpenter, A Jones, Pujols, Quintana, Samardjzia, sonny Gray, Cueto, Shelby Miller, Teheran. Thank you sooo much!!!
(Clark from Corn Maze)
Yoan Moncada, Kyle Schwarber, Gomez, Maikel Franco, Matt Carpenter, Sonny Cray, Johnny Cueto, and Adam Jones. (Mike Gianella)
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Should I trade M.Franco for Piscotty or Grichuk? I already have Sano.
(CharJaco from Oak)
You can do it for Randall Grichuk, but I prefer Maikel Franco and would hold (Mike Gianella)
2015-08-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has you outlook on Maikel Franco changed?
(Rob from Philly)
I was definitely lower than many on Franco, and I assume you know that since you're asking if my opinion has changed. I still think he's a first baseman, but the approach has been better and he's squaring everything up. He's certainly been a bright spot. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-06-02 18:00:00 (link to chat)What do you see happening for Maikel Franco in the near- and medium-term? The early struggles are not a huge surprise, and Sandberg is making noises about mechanical changes.
(justarobert from Santa Clara)
Well, if we're in the mechanical changes portion of Franco's development I don't expect good things to happen in the near- or mid-term. Franco's hit tool was always the biggest question mark here and if they're going to try and fix the player here it can get real ugly for a long time. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-04-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the next big star at 1st base, who is currently in minors? (Doesn't matter what he plays in minors)
(Orlando Merced from Clemente's porch)
Josh Bell or Maikel Franco. I know Franco can play third but I think by the time the bat plays at the "star" level he's at first. (Mike Gianella)
2015-04-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)when do you think Maikel Franco will be called up. what are your projections?
(Greg from NY)
I think June is the answer. I was never the biggest Franco fan but the raw pop can't be ignored. Ultimately, I think he's going to play 1B and hit ~.250ish with upside of 20 HR in prime. (CJ Wittmann)
2015-02-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Best reason to be optimistic about Maikel Franco this season?
(Brendan G from Bainbridge)
Be optimistic because Franco is pretty damn good and hits the ball pretty damn hard. If I were running the Phillies Id have this guy pencilled in as the starting 3B for the next 5 years in my plans. He's going to hit plenty though his slash lines won't fit exactly in the boxes we think they should. I think he could spend more time in the minors and it won't hurt him, but I'd almost prefer to see him face big leaguers and let him see exactly what he needs to tighten up to succeed at the next level. As for his glove, I see him as a fringe average defender in the "bigger 3B with a strong arm who isn't particularly mobile but has a good first move" mold. Franco comes up short of a star, but between him and J.P. Crawford I'd consider the future left side of my infield set and worry about the rest of the ballclub. (Al Skorupa)
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat)Is Matt Olson the one 1B prospect you would consider owning? Since most seemingly don't want anything to do with actual 1B prospects.
(Rich from MD)
If we don't count Maikel Franco or Josh Bell, I think Olson is the best 1B prospect in the minors, yes. That being said, he's not going to look as impressive this year out of the Cal League. (Ben Carsley)
2015-01-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is Maikel Franco being underrated in fantasy circles? With his power, in that park, he seems like he could be very valuable. Maybe not elite, but someone you are definitely happy with as a starter, even in shallow leagues.
(Shawn from Cubicle)
I think so, he's a solid fantasy option in the short term in my mind. He's fine in roto 5x5 leagues. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Maikel Franco is continuing his hot stretch from July into August and slugged his 10th HR last night. If he comes up in September, will he see time at 1st and 3rd? Also, what are your expectations of him as a major leaguer?
(Brett from New Jersey)
I think he's likely to see time at both spots, yes. I think he can straddle the gap between first and second division bat. The line would likely be below average for 1B, but playable at 3B. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)How concerned are you with Maikel Franco? His season so far has been uninspiring. Was his season last year a flash in a pan type of year?
(Alex from Florida)
I had problems with him last season after I sat on a series, and those problems continued this season. I think he has incredible bat speed but I don't like his swing mechanics and I think his hand/eye can only bail him out in certain situations. Major leaguer but not a first-division talent (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-09 15:00:00 (link to chat)There have been a lot of questions about Maikel Franco's ability to hit, at the same time his bat speed, strength, and hand-eye coordination have been praised. What flaws are present in the swing that give evaluators pause?
(MattWinks from Madison)
Lots of vertical head movement. Long hand path. Bad weight transfer pattern, it's almost a lunge. Nothing looks easy or smooth. (Ryan Parker)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Should I try to buy low on Maikel Franco? He's still only 21.
(Kevin from Virginia)
Ben Carsley made a good point while we were getting #DarkInDC. Franco is perfect for 5x5 roto leagues. The average won't be pretty but he has power potential. I'd buy low.

Now real life, well that's a completely different issue all together. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Jose Fernandez and Maikel Franco for Starlin Castro and Miguel Sano in a dynasty? Which side is getting better value? Little afraid I'm selling Fernandez at a low here with his TJS. My SS is Rutledge, and I'm in a complete rebuild. Really appreciate any help as I have no clue what to do. Thanks in advance Mauricio.
(Christian from North Pole)
No, I think you can get better value for Jose Fernandez if you're intent on moving him. I'm the president of the Starlin Castro fanclub and all but he's not on that level, even given the injury discount. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)position player that ranks significantly higher in a fantasy related top prospects list vs a real life prospect list?
(Joe Random from San Jose)
Maikel Franco. He's a good fantasy fit , real life I'm not in love. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)We all know the prospects that have taken a step forward but who are the prospects that have significantly gone backward and it wasn't injury related?
(Chris from Phoenix)
Well Mark Appel seems like the obvious choice here, but he may have some kind of injury thing going on in there. Who knows what's really going on with him.

Maikel Franco has really struggled, so he's definitely one. (Jeff Moore)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Who are some guys that you are higher on than other guys on the BP team? Lower? Also, what region do you do most scouting in?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Higher: Jake Thompson. He's going to burst onto the scene as a potential back end of top 100 prospect this year, if I have anything to say about it. Rougned Odor as well, I think he's one of the top 20 prospects in the game.

Lower: Maikel Franco. I see him as a 1B long term, and his feel for the barrel is only okay. The power potential is nice, but I absolutely detest 1B prospects. Gary Sanchez and Jorge Soler are each guys I'm low on, althoug I think the BP team is, too.

I'm located in Chicago, so I see a lot of MWL games. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Maikel Franco? I've heard mixed reviews on his hitting tool. I've been encouraged by his low K rate, which was why I picked him up in a dynasty league draft. Bonus question: what do you think the ETA is for Justin Nicolino?
(Luis from Brooklyn)
I love Franco; loved him since the day I saw him in Instructs as a 16/17 year old. He swings the bat way too much, but he's got that knack for getting the barrel to the ball, and driving it to all fields. I think he's an occasional All-Star.

On Nicolino, I think he probably gets a taste late this year or next year at the latest, but I don't really like the profile that much. (Mark Anderson)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What odds do you give Maikel Franco of sticking at 3b? I heard he is already going to get time at 1b this season.
(JoJo from SD)
Not the biggest fan of his profile at 3B; mostly because his body is sloppy. He can rip baseballs, but I worry about his approach against secondary stuff; deep, elevated hand load and he struggles with plate coverage. Great hand/eye and excellent bat speed, but major league pitching could really trip him up. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Maikel Franco is just outside the top 50 despite having one of the better offensive years last season. Do you see him as having a 30-100 potential or or will his low walk rate kill his avg at the mlb level. Choosing between Franco and Frazier (5 tool ceiling but far away) in a prospect draft.
(hardball from Petco)
I like Franco, but I take Frazier and it's not a hard choice for me. If you're trying to win at all costs in 2015, my answer might change, but I think Franco ends up a top-20ish fantasy 1B whereas Frazier could be a top-20 fantasy name overall. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Mike: Joc Pederson and Maikel Franco. Which one, in your opinion, will be the better player in 3 years? Am I correct in saying that Pederson has the higher floor and Franco has the higher ceiling?
(balticwolf from Silver Spring MD)
Hi balticwolf.

Hope you're staying warm.

Maybe it's because I live in Philadelphia and am succumbing to the hype, but I like Franco more than Pederson. Franco seems like he could be a big time power hitter if everything breaks right, whereas Pederson strikes me as a more solid all around outfielder but with less of a chance of achieving star potential. Regarding floor and ceiling, I'm not sure that's exactly right, but I would agree that Pederson has a narrower range of expectations (in my view) than Franco does. I don't see Franco crashing and burning, but if he was "only" an ordinary 15 HR/.270 BA guy it wouldn't surprise me. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think Cody Asche does this season?
(Master P from Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica)
I'm not a big Asche fan for this year. The Phillies are talking about moving Maikel Franco to 1B but it wouldn't surprise me to see Asche lose the job by August. If Asche does stick, you're probably looking at 12-14 HR with a .240 or .250 batting average. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you trade for Maikel Franco if your team needs a 3B?
(Ian from NYC)
No, he's not ready yet and will be a defensive liability there. I think he'll be just good enough to be a bad defensive third baseman rather than a bad defensive 1B. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Realisitic expectations for Maikel Franco? Was last year a fluke?
(vegetto712 from Florida)
Last year was not a fluke. Franco can rake. There's some development in the offensive approach that has to come yet, otherwise he's going to get worked by experienced arms that can exploit his swing-happy approach, but the offensive upside is considerable. I'm one of the few that remain standing when it comes to him doing enough to handle third base. It won't be pretty defensively, but I think it can work there; though I do see why people are so skeptical, and they could well be right in the end. (Mark Anderson)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Which rookies do you see making the biggest impact in 2014?
(floydwicker from NorCal)
Hi FloydWicker.

From a fantasy perspective, Billy Hamilton is probably #1 with a bullet. He's going to steal a lot of bases, and even if he only keeps his OBP around .300 he will still get on base enough to be a category monster. Xander Bogaerts is the other guy I really like in 2014. He should leave camp with the job and should be even better than he was last year. I expect more power from him. If you're looking for someone a little less obvious, I like Maikel Franco a lot. Cody Asche is likely a placeholder, and I could see Franco up with the big club in June. He isn't a fantasy beast, but could be a decent contributor at 3B for both the Phillies and his fantasy squads. (Mike Gianella)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Maikel Franco will be an impact bat and be able to stick at the hot corner?
(Chopper from Indy)
No and not for all that long. Think he can be a solid fantasy bat, but I don't see impact potential. The Phillies will likely keep him at third as long as possibly because they have Ryan Howard signed until 2341, but I don't think it will be pretty. (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has the consensus on Maikel Franco shifted since mid-season? It seems like at that point most seemed to think that while his power was legit his hitting mechanics had flaws that would be exposed at higher levels. Now most things on him seem to have a rosier glow. Did his consistency through the end of the year shift perception?
(petelunchbox from Handsome City)
I think astute evaluators still note the issues with the swing and the approach and question whether it will consistently work at the highest level. He's going to be a streaky hitter no matter how you look at him, but I think the sustained performance after promotion helped his stock some. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Maikel Franco seems to have some helium after a great 2013. I've heard "Sano-lite". If it safe to say Franco has a better hit tool but slightly less power? If so, does the better hit actually make him a better offensive player?
(Greg from Greensboro)
I don't think it's safe to say Franco has a better hit tool -- the key to both will be seeing how they make adjustments to advanced pitching at the highest levels. The power is a 60 to Sano's 80. Sano is the better overall offensive talent, and the better athlete. (Nick J. Faleris)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)2014 Phillies. Who gets the most-to-least big league plate appearances? Cody Asche, Maikel Franco, Freddy Galvis, Cesar Hernandez, Delmon Young, Michael Martinez?
(Broken Arrow from Far From Philly)
Cody Asche, just a hunch no real thing to back that up. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Maikel Franco a guy or a GUY?
(jgoldenberg from Philly)
He's a guy. He could be a GUY if he keeps raking. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Maikel Franco, PHI 3B of the future?
(captnamerca from Dunedin)
I like him. Now I've only read reports & seen YouTube videos, but I'm a fan. High risk, but legitimate upside. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-30 13:30:00 (link to chat)Hi Mark. To watch prospects playing well in AA at ages 20-22 must be like watching them grow up before your eyes. Enter as boys, leave as men. With this in mind I have questions about a few AA 3rd basemen. Malkiel Franco. Is his breakout 'real' and even more impressive given it is happening in the FSL?. Is Edward Salcedo starting to put it together as a glance at his numbers would seem to indicate? Thanks
(mike mcd from ottawa)
I have always been a Maikel Franco apologist since I saw him as a teenager during Instructs several years ago. I think he has All-Star potential once it all comes together. For me, his breakout is very real and he's the best positional prospect in the Phillies system. With Salcedo, I have always liked the tools but I don't think they'll ever fully translate to the game. He's made some strides this year and it shows in the numbers, but he still has a long way to go before I consider it a true breakout. (Mark Anderson)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Jorge Bonifacio or Maikel Franco? Did either get much consideration?
(Big Z from atlanta)
I like both; both were on my initial list. Both have quick bats and good raw pop (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
