2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat)amigo, un abrazo desde colombia, que progresos ve de JORGE ALFARO y si usted cree que ya el debe estar en AA, y cuando podria estar dando el sanlto a grandes ligas. gracias
(jalsaur9 from colombia)
Hola mi amigo de Colombia. Creo Alfaro tiene que mostrar mayor coherencia en el campo. Futuro muy brillante. Pero tiene que empezar a mostrar más con el bate. Cuidate-- Lo mejor (Jason Parks on the Top 50)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank Kevin Plawecki, Blake Swihart, Jorge Alfaro, and Kyle Schwarber offensively? Also, Who on that list should be starting by this time next season? Cheers
(Jim from Kansas)
In terms of ceiling, I think Alfaro has the highest overall offensive ceiling of that group, followed by Schwarber, Swihart and Plawecki. That said, Alfaro also comes with arguably the greatest risk in his offensive profile, so that has to be taken into account as well. I'm a pretty big believer in Alfaro, so I tend to think even if he doesn't reach his ceiling, he is still going to be an impactful offensive player.

I'm not sure any of these four guys are good bets to be starting in the Major Leagues by this time next year. Swihart and Plawecki would be the most likely bets, but I wouldn't put money on either one at this point in time. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Jorge Alfaro as a potential first-division or all-star player?
(childgrambino from Richmond, VA)
I think Alfaro is going to eventually blossom into one of the best catchers in the game today. He's going to take time, particularly when he first faces the challenges of the upper minor league levels and the Major Leagues, but his talent is so compelling that I think it ultimately comes together. (Mark Anderson)
2014-06-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jorge Alfaro's batting average isn't great this year, but he seems to be doing everything else pretty well. What are your thoughts on his future?
(Jim from Houston)
Alfaro is another guy where there is a gap between the tools and the production thanks to the lack of plate discipline, yet his production is still pretty good. That should speak to where his tools are. If it all comes together, we'll have a stud. As it is, we're almost guaranteed to have a catcher who hits for above-avearge power, runs well, and has a hose. (Jeff Moore)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Jorge Alfaro will be a top 20 prospect in the game by next season?
(nubber from tx)
If he continues to progress with his development, yes, its entirely possible. His tool-based ceiling could make him a top 5 talent in the minors if he really pops. He's a power hitting catcher with a motherfucker arm. Those are unicorns. (Jason Parks)
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat)Here is the passage that darkwarriorblake removed from Wikipedia's Die Hard plot: After being called a common thief, Gruber remarks that he is an exceptional thief. But even an exceptional thief would get thrown out at second by Jorge Alfaro. If only people asked you more fantasy questions!
(Steve from Nakatomi Plaza)
I love my job (Jason Parks)
2014-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Supposedly Nick Williams has the best hit tool in the Rangers' system but there has been no talk of him so far this year. All the talk has been on Gallo. Has Williams' shine worn off to where he is an average prospect now and Gallo ranks above him?
(Louis from At The Park (mentally))
In today's Ten-Pack...

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23420

...Tucker Blair said that he thinks Williams has the best hit tool of him, Gallo and Jorge Alfaro, so I wouldn't say the shine has worn off. It's just hard to get noticed when you're surrounded by 80-grade tools. (Jeff Moore)
2014-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)With the Rangers lacking catching situation, do you think Jorge Alfaro's ETA might be pushed up a bit? When do you think he'll be in the big leagues?
(nubber from tx)
No, rushing a prospect with almost a 5-to-1 K:BB ratio to the majors would be a complete disaster. He needs time. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's your best guess on the first date of Major Leaue ABs for Clint Frazier and Jorge Alfaro? thanks!
(conjoinedtwins from Quebec)
Frazier will require at least a couple of years in the minor leagues, possibly more. I think you're looking at 2016 at the earliest.

Alfaro very well could debut this year, but won't make it far into the 2015 season before he debuts. (Mark Anderson)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a shallow minor league system would you rather own Jorge Alfaro or Joey Gallo?
(CharlieWerner from Manayunk PA)
Wow, that's tough. You can make a case for the impact player at a premium defensive position, or you can make an equal case for the massive raw of Gallo. If it's a shallow system, give me the guy that can defend at a premium position and has the potential to be really good offensively as well. (Mark Anderson)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Prof, if you would be so kind as to rank these three catchers for future impact as hitters only: Jorge Alfaro, Gary Sanchez, Blake Swihart. thank you.
(CyMature from Cooperstown Retirement Home)
Alfaro, Sanchez, and Swihart. When it comes to all-around game, I'd go Alfaro, Swihart, and Sanchez (Jason Parks)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Right now who's your favorite prospect to watch play baseball?
(Tony from Work)
My favorite prospect to watch his spring was Padres IF Josh Van Meter just because he got a hit in just about every AB I saw--and I saw a lot of his ABs. Jorge Alfaro has been my favorite prospect to watch for a long time be because he can show impact tools on all sides of the ball, and at some point in each game, will do something on the field that makes you say, "Holy shit!" (Jason Parks)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)Does Francisco Mejia project as a Jorge Alfaro style player (minus the speed) or are his offensive tools lacking that sort of projection?
(kfazio from WV)
Playing fast and loose with comps... yeah. He's got a lot of tools and can be a force on defense and offense. He's currently got good speed as well, but Alfaro is several levels ahead so don't go crazy about Mejia just yet (he says hypocritically). (Craig Goldstein)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)NL dynasty leagues.... Name 1 catcher and future closer who will start in minors with big upside
(DB from Pittsburgh)
Jorge Alfaro and Jake Barrett. (Bret Sayre)
2014-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the better chance of sticking at catcher: Gary Sanchez or Jorge Alfaro? Do you think either will long term?
(Damon from Louisville)
If you look at what our Prospectus writers have to say, Sanchez seems less likely to stick behind the plate. My reading of the tea leaves is Alfaro should be behind the plate and eventually in the majors. Sanchez is less likely for both. (Harry Pavlidis)

2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a 20 team $260 cap dynasty league would you give up Gyorko at $5 for the rest of the year and you can extend him for as long as you want for $5 more each year for Gausman or Zimmer and Jorge Alfaro? If so which combination?
(Lodi from California)
I have no idea how to answer this. I've never done an auction league. Consult the Bat Signal. Those guys know all the different fantasy formats. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22647 (Jeff Moore)
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Jorge Alfaro hit enough to reach his ceiling (or close to it)?

If we knew if prospects would hit enough to reach their ceilings, none of this would be any fun. What we can say with some confidence, however, is that Alfaro has enough power potential to be an above-average bat behind the plate, regardless of whether he hits .230 or .280. The difference between those two is what will determine whether he becomes Jared Saltalamaccia or Brian McCann. (Jeff Moore)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Jorge Alfaro or Gary Sanchez - who is the more valuable fantasy player in 3 years?
(Frank from Lexington)
Gary Sanchez just based on ceiling. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)If both are still catching, who is the better player in three years: Gary Sanchez or Jorge Alfaro?
(Dave from Lexington)
Alfaro. Not even close for me. (Jason Parks on the Completed Prospect Rankings)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)A few prospects that blow up the rankings next year.
(Wade from Road House bar)
Alex Reyes, David Dahl, Francisco Mejia ,Jose Martinez, Luiz Gohara, Edwin Diaz, Jorge Alfaro, Reese McGuire, Jose Ortiz (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-02-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Jorge Alfaro lives up to the hype and becomes a star MLB catcher. I wonder, especially after the remarks that Paul Sporer made about about Alfaro.
(cracker73 from Florida)
I don't ever second guess prospect writers. They know more and care more. (Sam Miller)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)I have 5 dynasty league minor league slots, the first 4 are filled by Javier Baez, Miguel Sano, Kris Bryant, and Gregory Polanco. Who should I choose for my last spot between Clint Frazier and Jorge Alfaro?
(CharlieWerner from Manayunk PA)
I have them ranked fairly closely to one another. I'll say Frazier, but barely. (Ben Carsley)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on the Pirates 3 catching prospects: Mathisen, McGuire, and Jhang, which one wins out and why?
(Dave from Pittsburgh from Boston)
McGuire is head and shoulders ahead of the other two, though the other two are prospects in their own right. McGuire is going to make a leap this year and will be the best catching prospect in baseball as soon as Hedges and Jorge Alfaro graduate to the majors. His makeup is off the charts, and his tools aren't exactly terrible either. (Jeff Moore)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)I saw a twitter feud (if you can call it that) between Sporer and Guru this weekend about Jorge Alfaro... Is he really as brutal and "completely lost" behind the plate as Sporer claims? Seems harsh to me, and if he can make some strides with the swing and miss, a catcher with an elite arm, 20hr pop and 10 steal potential seems like an extremely valuable asset
(Biscuits from San Jose)
I saw that too. I'll say this: Sporer's comments were the harshest I've heard about Alfaro. He's not great with the glove, but I haven't heard too many people say that it won't improve to the point where he can at least remain behind the plate. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-17 10:00:00 (link to chat)Will Jorge Alfaro's hit tool develop enough for him to become a star? He has the power, arm, and defense profile, but are you worried about his ability to hit? Does he have the skills to develop into a .280+ hitter if everything goes right?
(Chris from Baltimore)
I'm not sold about the hit tool or I would be inclined to rank him in the top ten in baseball. The raw tools point to a superstar; 8 arm, 5 glove, 7 raw power, 6 run. But the hit tool and plan at the plate are question marks for me. I think he's a star even if he hits .260 (fringe-5 tool) because the power should flow enough and the defensive profile would make him a weapon behind the plate. A .260 hitter with 25+ bombs and excellent catch/throw skills behind the plate is a first-division/all-star level profile. If the bat plays above that, holy shit. #TheLegend (Jason Parks)
2013-12-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)ETA for Jorge Alfaro in Arlington? Do you see Arenado as an all-star at the hot corner?
(chopper from Indy)
Late 2015 or 2016? Though you should probably ask again in the prospect chats.

And yes on your second question. Yes on your second, 20% having to do with Arenado, 80% having to do with the fact that everyone makes the All-Star team. Doubt it's this year. (Zachary Levine)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jason- The Ranger farm system is full of high upside/high risk prospects. If you could choose the three you would most like to gamble on, who would they be?
(PJD from Bahamas)
I would gamble on Jorge Alfaro, Nick Williams, and Nomar Mazara (Jason Parks)
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the better catching prospect between Jorge Alfaro and Gary Sanchez? And which one has the greater offensive upside?
(cracker73 from Florida)
Alfaro. Not close. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Austin Hedges or Jorge Alfaro?
(TPX2 from Taiwan)
Alfaro has the highest ceiling. But if I'm starting a team, I'm taking Hedges. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jorge Alfaro seems to have enjoyed a fine AFL at the plate. What are your observations of his progress defensively? Does he have the skills to stick at the position? Thanks.
(Travs Hound from Arkansas)
I have not seen Alfaro this fall, but the people I have spoken with have seen flashes of defensive progress. The arm is crazy good and one of the best in the business. The receiving and defensive attributes are coming along but he still struggles at times. The tools are there for him to be an asset, but it is going to take time. As for him sticking at the position, I believe he does stay there long term. (Mark Anderson)
2013-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)R.J.- Do you think Bogaerts is the everyday SS in Beantown next season? What are realistic expectations of Jorge Alfaro, assuming he reaches MLB?
(Chopper from Indy)
I think Bogaerts is an everyday player in Boston next season, but the position is to be determined. I could see Boston keeping Drew and throwing Bogaerts at third base just as easily as I could see them inserting him as the new shortstop. He's been very impressive this postseason at any rate.

I've never seen Alfaro, so I don't feel too comfortable dishing on him. Instead I'll defer to Jason Parks who threw an All-Star ceiling on him not long ago. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you consider Archie Bradley to be a significantly better prospect than Jameson Taillon, or is it a 1 and 1a type of thing? Is Jorge Alfaro the real deal? Thank you.
(Chopper from Indy)
I would take Bradley over Taillon. I'm not sure I would say he's a significantly better prospect, but I think he develops into the the better ML starter. (Jason Parks)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any chance Tampa gets Jorge Alfaro and Jurickson Profar in a trade for David price?
(Al from Dallas)
I would ask for him in any deal with Texas (Jason Parks)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Enjoyed your insight at the Houston event earlier this year. Was Jorge Alfaro's year a disappointment or a marginal step? Have opinions of him improved or decreased this season?
(Scott7015 from Houston)
Thanks! Slight step forward for me, especially in terms of all-around maturity and on-field presence. I think the opinions of him have stayed about steady. Something definitely seemed to click after his injury this season; he just looked like a more confident player. The passed balls were an issue but I thought his catching took a slight step forward. The next step is going to be ironing out the consistency and learning to focus all the time behind the plate, instead of having the occasional lapses that led to the passed balls and spurts of poor defense behind the dish. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Rougned Odor become the Rangers' top prospect?
(Or from Dallas)
I'll answer another couple more in-depth Odor questions soon, but he's probably #2 for me right now, behind Jorge Alfaro. (Jason Cole)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which five players currently in the minors have the highest ceiling?
(Mario66 from Pittsburgh)
Byron Buxton, Oscar Taveras, Javier Baez, Archie Bradley, Jorge Alfaro (hard to name five) (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)It's not obvious from his stat line whther or not Jorge Alfaro has made much progress this year. What's the take from people who have seen him play?
(Bob from TX)
To me, Alfaro has made more progress going into this season (and early this season) than he has between any of his other pro seasons thus far. There's some inconsistency there both offensively and defensively. But I spoke to a scout who saw Alfaro in Hickory recently, and he commented that Alfaro was the best player on the field. The defense has also been hit and miss, but his receiving and the utility of his plus-plus arm definitely took a step forward in spring training. It's positive on him so far. Not a crazy, crazy jump, but steps in the right direction. (Jason Cole)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Can you rank these guys please. Thanks! Marcus Stroman, Didi Gregorius, Jorge Alfaro, Austin Hedges, Daniel Norris, Lance McCullers, Bryce Brentz, Daniel Corcino, Clayton Blackburn, Delino DeShields.
(Brandon from Pittsburgh)
DeShields, Blackburn, McCullers, Alfaro, Brentz, Stroman, Hedges, Norris, Corcino, Gregorius. (Bret Sayre)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Wilin Rosario a good comp for Jorge Alfaro offensively? Just drafted him at the end of our keeper league minor league draft to speculate on the upside.
(Corey from NYC)
Paging Jason Parks! Alfaro is 19 years old and has never played above A-ball so I'm the last person who should speculate on anyone's future from that starting point. I know what I was like when I was 19... (Cory Schwartz)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)You've always loved Jorge Alfaro's swing, but at what point do you expect him to learn to take a walk?
(Greg from Albany, NY)
I'm not sure he will ever be a big walk guy. He likes to swing. It's not the best approach, but as long as he can work himself into good hitting conditions and execute if given the opportunity, I don't need him to walk a ton. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Jorge Alfaro?
(Justin from OK)
I've been waxing poetic about Jorge Alfaro since he was 16-years-old. I'm a huge fan and I think he could develop into a superstar. Will he? No idea. He has the tools to make the dream a possibility, though. 6 runner; 7+ raw power; 8 arm; near elite bat speed. We shall see if it translates to the field. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Jorge Alfaro was made available in Dickey trade talks, would an Alfaro/Olt package be more valuable than an Olt/Leonys Martin package?
(Todd from Hoboken)
Alfaro won't be made available. I'd be hesitant to trade Olt straight-up for Dickey, much less a package of Olt and Martin. Olt is a top ~30 prospect in the game. That's a handsome return. #CaptainAmerica (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jorge Alfaro, 70 arm, 65 power, 60 hit?
(rangerfans2 from Fort Worth, TX)
80 arm; 70 raw power potential; 5 hit (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you recall a specific story where a prospect you were watching that put you an awe, knowing you were looking at a future superstar?
(rangerfans2 from RyanW)
Every time I watch Jorge Alfaro take BP or infield. He's a star if he wants it. (Jason Parks)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have we learned anything about Jorge Alfaro this year?
(Dave from Austin)
Not really. He hasn't played enough. He needs to stay healthy, get reps, and take steps forward with his approach. It's a slow process at times. (Jason Parks)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Jorge Alfaro takes more than 15 BBs this year is the year considered a success?
(jaymoff from Salem, OR)
I'd like to see the approach improve, as it will help the overall offensive skill-set. Not setting any statistical markers, though. I just want to see progression. (Jason Parks)
