2011-06-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)NL only, 12 team league. We have one bench spot currently held by Ankiel as there is NOTHING available for free agent hitters. I'm trying to get to first in saves, so with that said, is Rubby De La Rosa worth keeping active, or should I cut either him or Ankiel to activate Vicente Padilla?
(kddean from Chicago)
Ankiel's a very solid bench guy in a league that deep. I think de la Rosa is more of a longshot to take saves in LA, and depending when you actually need to make a decision, I'd probably activate Padilla and drop him. I think there's a greater than 50/50 chance he starts getting save opps again until Broxton returns. If you have a few days before you need to make a decision, see how LA uses Padilla. Definitely don't drop Padilla, though, if that's something you're considering. (Derek Carty)
2010-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jay Who do you see the Dodgers settling on for the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation? Elbert hasn't exactly been lighting it up for the Isotopes, is he still a consideration? Would Washburn be that much of an improvement over what they already have?
(JoeR from Upstate)
Well, I'd assume that if Vicente Padilla returns he'll get first crack at reclaiming the fourth spot, and it sounds like John Ely has earned himself a longer look in the rotation based upon his past two starts. Scott Elbert hasn't pitched very well down in Albuturkey, but perhaps later this summer he'll round into shape, him or Josh Lindblom. Other than salty veteran goodness of the kind Joe Torre craves, I don't think Washburn would bring that much of an improvement, particularly given that he's been sitting on his derriere. For that kind of trouble, I wonder about the possibility of a Pedro Martinez return to Chavez Ravine. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-06-03 15:00:00 (link to chat)Rangers or Angels to win the West?
(oOoOo from UuUuU)
As impressed as I am by the effects of the Rangers' defensive upgrade, I still worry that their staff doesn't miss enough bats, and holy hell does Vicente Padilla stink on ice. [post-chat update: Padilla placed on outright waivers and told to get out of Dodge by sundown]

I'll still take the Angels in the long race, thanks. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Vicente Padilla for Phil Hughes.
(X from Y)
The Yankees wouldn't include Hughes in a Johan Santana deal so .. (Will Carroll)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What sort of return could thoroughly contributing veterans with a history of inconsistency and trouble (read Vicente Padilla, Milton Bradley) fetch in a trade?
(Or from Dallas)
Well, the way teams covet starting pitcher and as well as Padilla has been pitching, I would think the Rangers could get something decent back for him. Bradley is good but there's always a question of the baggage he carries and that scares some teams off. (John Perrotto)

BP Roundtables

DateRoundtable NameComment
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableWell, it was quite a day. Mark Buehrle made the defensive play of the year on the first day of the season, Jason Heyward began the road to stardom at Carlos Zambrano's expense, and we decided that Vicente Padilla dressed in a white leather anything probably qualified as something better left unimagined. Thanks for joining us! (Dan Wade)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener Roundtable"bobbob1313 (Miami): With all of the ragging on the Vicente Padilla's of the world going on here, I've got to ask: Off the top of your heads, who is the worst opening day starter you can think of in recent memory? Is there a better (worse?) choice for this than Mark Hendrickson?"

I don't even know if Padilla was the worst opening day starter this year. I think Westbrook may hold the honors there. Or maybe Frank Francisco. (Colin Wyers)

Hendrickson is certainly a good choice (no pun intended), but I distinctly remember one Carl Pavano, post-buttocks injury, taking the ball on Opening Day a couple years back. (Steph Bee)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener Roundtable"Vicente Padilla (Where ever I live): how much do I suck on a scale of 1 to Jose Lima?"

Everything is a matter of context, really. He's not a BAD pitcher, really sort of an averagish pitcher. But that gets obscured when you start comparing him to the typical opening-day starter, which is usually a well above average pitcher (even most bad teams are able to scrape together at least ONE pitcher better than Padilla). (Colin Wyers)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableColin, which makes it all the more disturbing that it was mentioned in connection with Vicente Padilla. (Dan Wade)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableSteph Bee (5:34:16 PM PT): PhillyFriar (Boston): Worse idea: tabbing Vicente Padilla as your Opening Day starter? Or the entire Giants lineup?

Neither is as bad as this woman my friend Bruce married. I just don't understand the attraction between some people. They have nothing in common, she's loud and abrasive and hates baseball, and belittles him constantly. Bruce would definitely have been better off with Padilla. (Steven Goldman)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtablePhillyFriar (Boston): Worse idea: tabbing Vicente Padilla as your Opening Day starter? Or the entire Giants lineup?

Easy: Padilla is your Opening Day starter for only one day and takes the ball only once every five days. The Giants' lineup is for the entire year. (Steph Bee)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableEnough of Vicente Padilla and company. I've got to see what's going on with Shaun Marcum. (Jay Jaffe)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableAnd there's Vicente Padilla, Dodgers' Opening Day starter, giving up a game-tying two-run homer to Garrett Jones. That went about 738 feet. (Jay Jaffe)

2009-10-21 17:00:00NLCS Game 5It is indeed hard to believe that Vicente Padilla is the Dodgers' last gasp. Who could have ever predicted that just two months ago as I wrote in On The Beat today. I'll give Ned Colletti credit. He did his due diligence and believed Padilla wouldn't be a problem like he was in Texas.
(John Perrotto)
2009-10-16 13:00:00NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game OneOn Vicente Padilla, I realize his time with the Dodgers defines small sample size, but someone explain his BIP numbers. The Rangers had a very solid defense, Padilla had the same stuff, it's not like the Rangers weren't in a race. There's just no explanation I've heard that is anything other than *shrug*. (Will Carroll)
2009-10-16 13:00:00NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game OneAre you ready for some football???

Oops... Wrong song. It's Vicente Padilla, so maybe it should be...

Are you ready for some needlessly hit batsmen? (Steven Goldman)
2009-10-16 13:00:00NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game OneAnd Vicente Padilla gets through the first on nine pitches, with a lone single by Chase Utley the sole blemish. Good start for the Dodgers. (Jay Jaffe)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC

In 2012, he relied primarily on his Fourseam Fastball (94mph) and Sinker (94mph), also mixing in a Splitter (86mph) and Slow Curve (54mph). He also rarely threw a Curve (77mph).
