2013 There aren’t many chinks in Yelich’s offensive armor, and any doubters who remained were likely silenced when the former first-round pick tore up the Florida State League, ranking second in batting average and leading the circuit in slugging by nearly 40 points. Defensively, though, Yelich must continue honing his reads in the outfield, especially because his 40-grade arm will relegate him to left. A potential perennial .300 hitter with 25-homer power and the smarts to steal 20 bases, Yelich could debut this summer and become a household name thereafter.
2012 Yelich worked quickly to justify the Marlins’ use of the 23rd pick in the 2010 draft on him, earning the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year award with a strong full-season debut in which he was the only teenager to rank among the top 10 in total bases in the South Atlantic League. Yelich displayed impressive consistency. Of his 122 games, 42 were multi-hit affairs and he went hitless just 32 times. He has the potential to hit for above-average power, which could make him a superstar if he slides from left to center field. That power isn't likely to manifest itself this year, however, as Yelich is slated to spend the bulk of his summer in the Florida State League.
2011 A pretty swing always turns a few heads, but few expected Christian Yelich's stroke was enough of a looker to get him picked 23rd overall by the Marlins last June. He's big enough to inspire hope, and if the pop comes and he can handle left, the Marlins will find plenty of people to share their enthusiasm for his upside.

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Better young outfield now and in the future. Gregory Polanco, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte vs. Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich and Gincarlo Stanton?
(Drew from Rockford, IL)
Pirates now, maybe Marlins next year, Pirates after that. Because are we to assume Stanton stays in Miami? Because with five bazillion trade rumors in the last two years, one of 'em's gotta be true. (Matt Sussman)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)I recently traded Wilin Rosario and Starlin Castro for Christian Yelich and a future draft pick. Good move? And in how many years does Ryan McMahon take over the catching duties in Colorado? P.S. Thank you for the chat.
(Drew from Rockford, IL)
I'm the president of the Starlin Castro fan club, but objectively I don't like this deal too much. I think Castro has more value than Yelich short and long term. Don't think McMahon catches in Colorado, really like his profile however. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Yelich sure can hit, but where's the homerun power?
(Luc from Atlanta)
We're giving up on Yelich's power already? He's 22 and has 79 major league games to his credit. Please repeat after me: not every prospect is Bryce Harper.

Yes, Yelich's power hasn't kicked in yet. That also happens when your organization rushes you to the majors. He's doing a damn good job of holding his own despite getting just 49 games in the high minors. Power is usually the last tool to develop, especially on young guys who are still filling out their frame. Yelich is a bit of a string bean. He'll fill out. Plus that home park doesn't help. He won't be a big time power guy but he's got 15 a season in there somewhere. (Jeff Moore)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a 17 auction keeper/snake supplemental draft H2H 5x5 Cuts need to be made (guys on the block) Starlin castro 25$ Chase Headley 22$ Christian Yelich 9$ Denard Span 1$ I think I may attempt to release and redraft Castro (is this a good 2014 move with some decent options like Brad Miller in auction if this fails) and Christian Yelich.. PECOTA doesnt really have him setting the world on fire and hes not the greatest against lefties. For category sake (steals .BA) is span the better value at 1$
(dancini from Pittsburgh)
Yeah I think so. Span is going to hit around .280 with 20 steals this year. Castro is too expensive and Yellich is too far away. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for doing the chat, Mauricio. Could you rank these OF based on offensive production five years from now - Christian Yelich, Gregory Polanco, Albert Almora, Clint Frazier, David Dahl.
(Luke from Schenectady)
Yellich - Frazier - Dahl - Almora - Polanco, but I think it's tight. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)When will Christian Yelich become a 20(hr) 20(sb) guy, this year or next ... or never?
(Luc from Georgia)
it could take a while. he doesn't hit lefties and he's still just 22. plus that park is tough on power. (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)I have Yelich, Marisnick, AND Ozuna in an inherited 10-team 40-keeper dynasty. How many of them do I keep vs redrafting? I'm not expecting to be competitive in 2014.
(dohogne from Phoenix)
I would keep Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick. Marcel Ozuna could be a solid regular, but could also be on the outside looking in. The other two are good enough that you should keep them based on the skills/upside and hope for the best given your non-competitive footing. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)what do you think is the most interesting position battle this spring in terms of fantasy impact.
(higgsboson from guelph)
I want to see what happens in the Marlins outfield. Brian Bogusevic really intrigues me as a deep league power/speed sleeper, and Christian Yelich might start in the minors but could also get the call. Marcell Ozuna is kind of underrated in deeper leagues as well. There are a lot of non-Giancarlo Stanton options in this outfield who could provide fantasy impact or not depending on how the battles shake out. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Christian Yelich? What is a realistic stat line for him in 2014? What about in his prime?
(Ben from Panama City)
I saw Yelich at the Futures Game this year and couldn't believe how poised he looked for such a young player. I think some of the power comes next year and a 15 HR/15 SB line is entirely possible. In his prime, 25 HR/15 SB with a .280 BA is what I would be looking at. Yelich impressed me. He is still a work in progress, but I see good things in his future. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)List 5 hitters and pitchers that you feel could be breakout players in 2014. Thanks for the chat, Mike!
(Brett from The Office)
Hi Brett.

Hitters: Christian Yelich, Billy Hamilton, Oscar Taveras, Avisail Garcia, Josmil Pinto.

Pitchers: Jameson Taillon, Rafael Montero, Drew Smyly, Jimmy Nelson, Taijuan Walker. (Mike Gianella)
2013-06-27 13:15:00 (link to chat)Christian Yelich has been selected to play in the Future's Game. Love the guy, but he hasn't played in like a month. And that's after he missed games to start the season. He also missed a bunch of games in 2012. As justifiably a top rated prospect, is it time we faced the fact he lacks that 6th tool, staying healthy?
(Paul from DC)
Certainly too soon to consign him to the Jeremy Hermida Memorial Wing of Perpetually Fragile Florida Prospects, but it's something to monitor. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-05-29 18:30:00 (link to chat)when will c.yelich be called up?
(millerarm from nashville)
Hi millerarm

I don't know. We do know that the Marlins aren't afraid to promote their best players regardless of Super 2 status/monetary concerns so if Christian Yelich continues to perform we could see him this summer. My educated guess is August but if Yelich gets hot that could escalate quickly. (Mike Gianella)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Christian Yelich the real deal Holyfield?
(nubber from tx)
Yes. He can absolutely rake. Remember: good hitters f*cking hit. He hits. He's going to hit. Good times. (Jason Parks)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Christian Yelich will be promoted this season considering the Marlins aggressiveness with Jose Fernandez?
(nubber from tx)
I couldn't even begin to predict what the Marlins are going to do, but I do think Yelich is likely for a cup of coffee this season. (Jason Cole)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)If Christian Yelich tears it up in AA, will the Marlins really wait until August to call him up? Especially since keeping Juan Pierre around is pointless. Thanks!
(Christopher from TN)
Yelich is on the fast-track, and given the fact that he plays for the Marlins, I'm surprised he isn't starting the year with the major league club. (Jason Parks)
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Yelich is having a fabulous Spring Training with the Marlins. For contract reasons we all know he won't make the team come Opening Day. But after Stanton, he's the best position player anywhere in the entire organization, isn't he? Though that might not be saying more about the Marlins than it is about Yelich.
(Paul from DC)
Stanton is definitely No. 1, and I guess you could make an argument for Yelich as No. 2 right now. PECOTA says Justin Ruggiano should be a 2+ win player this year, which is a nice development for them. But I wouldn't be stunned if Yelich could come up now and outplay that.

By the way, Placido Polanco is third on that list. So yeah, that says something about the Marlins. (Zachary Levine)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)With Christian Yelich getting more spring training playing time so far than any other outfielder on the Marlins (and doing quite well too), is there any chance at all that he makes the team either out of Spring Training or soon after the Super 2 arbitration cut point in May?
(Paul from DC)
Hi Paul! Yelich has been impressive, but he'll be lucky to be anything more than a September callup. Marlins ain't gonna rush him. (Paul Singman)
2012-11-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any of these prospects make a difference this year? Gary Brown, Darrin Ruf, Wilmer Flores, Christian Yelich, or Kolten Wong.
(Frederick from The Hills)
Ruf is the closest to the bigs, so there's a good chance we'll see him a bunch this year. Seems unlikely any of the others make an Opening Day Roster, but Kolten Wong is interesting given St. Louis' void at second base. Flores could stand a mid-to-late season chance with the Mets in a similar boat. Brown could be late season, Yelich is probably still a year off. (Derek Carty)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Yelich had an excellent year in the A+ Florida League and then followed it up with a very unexciting, but not bad, season in the AFL. How much of an impact does a so-so 20 games in Phoenix have on Yelich's status as a prospect?
(Paul from DC)
The results don't mean much, if anything, at all. Scouts want to see the mechanics, how he deals with a tough game or two, how he reacts to left-handed breaking balls and good RH changeups, things like that. Also, with Yelich, his defense in the outfield and what the chances are he can stick out there are critical aspects that scouts wanted to see in Arizona. I don't think the AFL changes anyone's mind about a prospect unless they haven't seen him for some time. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is an upside projection/comparison of the Marlin's Christian Yelich someone like Nick Markakis?
(Paul from DC)
Yeah, I think Yelich profiles as a .285+ hitter with 10-15 HR and a ton of doubles. It's also not out of the question that he develops into a .300 hitter. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is your top Marlin prospect heading into 2013, the hard throwing Jose Fernandez or the sweet swinging Christian Yelich?
(Paul from DC)
Yelich remains atop the Marlins rankings for me, but Fernandez is a hell of a number-two. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christian Yelich is putting up a pretty good hitting line so far in the Florida League. But how has his defense in Center? Is there even a 5 or 10% chance he gets a cup of coffee with the Marlins in September?
(Paul from DC)
Utterly no chance at the big leagues. It serves no purpose, he'd get destroyed there, and he's not even on the 40-man. He's going to end up profiling better in a corner than in center. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-06-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there anyone stopping Christian Yelich from taking over as the Marlin's starting left fielder come 2014?
(Paul from DC)
I think some of Yelich's timetable depends on the progress, or lack thereof, Sanchez and Morrison make. If Sanchez tanks and Morrison slides to first, left field is Yelich's for the taking. If Morrison sticks in left, that complicates things. I don't think Yelich is going to be a big-league center fielder. (Bradley Ankrom)
