I wouldn't say it's a lost year at all. The PCL is a wasteland for any young pitcher, and in fact, pitching prospects often do better in the big leagues than in that league. I know the stuff has taken a small step back, and he's made a couple of mechanical adjustments. But, the profile is still that of a top of the rotation starter and an impact arm with a plus, plus fastball, plus to plus, plus breaker, and solid avg CH. He'll be fine.

Matz was touched upon by our dearly beloved Jason Parks in his 'what did I miss' series. Definitely an intriguing profile, and could be a middle of the rotation starter. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-08-29 12:00:00 (link to chat)Which top 25 prospects have a better than 50-50 shot at getting called up to the Bigs come September?
(Paul from DC)
I'd say Archie Bradley and Alex Meyer are the obvious ones. Maybe Noah Syndergaard and/or Francisco Lindor. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Noah Syndergaard going to haunt the Blue Jays?
(Evan from Canada)
Mort said it, so we know it's true. #RIPMort (Craig Goldstein)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)How many more big call-ups do you think will happen this season, and who do you think they will be?
(Graham from Richmond, VA)
There won’t be too many more, but a few. Noah Syndergaard should get a call. The Mets have to get that poor kid out of Vegas. Lindor could get a chance once the Indians are out of things, especially if they move Asdrubal Cabrera. Joc Pederson will get called up to the Rays when they trade him for David Price. Wait, what? (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the true recovery timetable on Dylan Bundy? And do you see any other SPs getting an All-Star Break call up and making an impact fantasy-wise (Noah Syndergaard, Tyler Skaggs, Jameson Taillon, etc.)?
(pmitchell60 from NOLA)
Is there a possibility that Bundy gets some big league innings, probably in a relief role this season? Sure. There's no reason to rush it, really. All depends on how he feels. It's more important that he's healthy in 2015 and beyond. Could make the case that he's the best pitching prospect in the minors. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's your opinion on Noah Syndergaard? Potential ace?
(Graham from Richmond, VA)
I don't think he ends up an ace, but like Thor quite a bit. He's in my top 3 for pitching prospects, and has the chance to throw upwards of 200 innings at a very high level, year in and year out. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-06-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks SK for the chat suggestion. Another great reason to use the prospect's name is that some of us out here don't know the pet nicknames folks have for their teams' prospects. I keep seeing references to "Thor" in chats and I have no idea who that is.
(Chris from KC)
Thor is Noah Syndergaard, and is a fantastic nickname. Your point is well taken, though. (Jeff Moore)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)In our h2h points league where we keep 5 players in the round drafted and can keep them as long as forever, I have stashed Bradley in round 16. His injury is making me wonder if it would be advisable to change horses. Other options that could be kept in round 20 would be Noah Syndergaard, Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, Byron Buxton, or Marcus Stroman. Benches are short so keeping any prospect is a luxury especially since my team is always a strong title contender. Is anyone of the above arguably a better stash than Bradley as far as impact both this year and beyond?
(Eric Nosebar from Albuquerque )
Give me Syndergaard, Russell, Bryant or Buxton in Round 20 over Bradley in Round 16. Buxton's the biggest upside, but he likely won't contribute right away in 2015. (Bret Sayre)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who's the pitcher with the brightest future that will come up this year? I have the no.1 waiver wire pick in my keeper points league (1pt per K, -1 per BB)?
(Shauntell from Ohio)
That would be Mr. Noah Syndergaard. (Bret Sayre)
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospects are at the top end of the scale when it comes to locating their pitches?
(Gary from Irvine, CA)
The guys that came up the most during our off-season Top Tools (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22959) discussion were Kyle Hendriks, Dylan Bundy, Ty Blach, Justin Nicolino, Rafael Montero, Marucs Stroman, and Noah Syndergaard. (Mark Anderson)
2014-04-03 19:30:00 (link to chat)Crag, are you at all worried about Clayton Kershaw? I'm asking because I have a trade offer on the table I'm considering right now. The offer is Kershaw for Mark Appell, Addison Russell, Aaron Sanchez and Noah Syndergaard (I would be the one getting Kershaw). The league I'm playing in is a keeper league with 16 teams, H2H, points-based scoring. I would be able to keep Kershaw for the next four years (2015-2018). Would you pull the trigger on this one?
(Armin from Vienna, Austria)
I talked about my concern with Kershaw before but this is a hell of an offer. I think I'd take Kershaw. As much as I love the prospects, there's a wide variation of how they all pan out. I know it can be scary to give up all that potential, but not having to give up a major league for Clayton F***ing Kershaw is insane. Gotta do it. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)If the Mets were offering Noah Syndergaard in a trade, what kind of player could they ask for?
(MetsFaithful5 from Syracuse)
I assume this is hypothetical because he is one of the least available players in all of baseball, but it would have to be another upper-upper echelon prospect with 6 years of team control remaining. (Jeff Moore)
2014-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any true similiarites between Casey Meisner and Noah Syndergaard? Aside from being native texans! They have similar builds (obviously, Meisner may still grow another inch or so and will definitely add some weight, as Thor did in the last year plus). And was Syndergaard pegged a Potenial 1/2 starter when he was first drafted?
(MetsFaithful5 from Syracuse)
They are both tall. Different bodies and arsenals. Syndergaard could be a 1/2 type; I put a mid-rotation ceiling on Meisner. (Jason Parks on the Completed Prospect Rankings)
2014-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some minor league arms with fastballs too good to ignore...like Robert Stephenson?
(Chris from Baltimore)
Jonathan Gray, Yordano Ventura, Lucas Giolito, Noah Syndergaard, Alex Meyer ... I am big on Kyle Zimmer's fastball, which only loses deception when he ratchets down the momentum in his delivery, resulting in lesser depth at release point and poor command. It's an 8 when he lines up the gears. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Higher ceiling: Miguel Almonte or Noah Syndergaard?
(Joe from KS)
Noah Syndergaard. (Ronit Shah)
2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thor is Syndergaard by the way. And who would you rather have out of these three long term: Robert Stephenson, Jameson Tallion, or Noah Syndergaard?
(MetsFaithful5 from Syracuse )
Long-term, I'm going with ceiling. So I'll take Stephenson. (Ronit Shah)
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Despite the inherent costs of starting the arbitration clock earlier, shouldn't the immediate success of top NL fireballing pitching prospects last year like Gerrit Cole, Jose Fernandez, Shelby Miller, Michael Wacha and even lower ceiling guys like Tony Cingrani and Alex Wood made it more likely that Archie Bradley, Noah Syndergaard and maybe even guys like Matt Wisler and James Taillon come up to help their clubs as early as possible?
(Scott from LA)
Maybe, but remember everyone's developmental cycles are different. Kevin Gausman seemed like a good bet to succeed right out of the gates, instead he allowed more hits than innings pitched. So it's really a case-by-case thing.

Plus, with the exception of Jose Fernandez, all those pitchers were on quality teams. If I'm the Mets I'm not eager to cost myself more money later on for two months of a guy who, let's face it, isn't the difference between the postseason and the golf course. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)What do you see in prospects Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero of the Mets? How will they fair in an up and coming rotation that already has an ace in Matt Harvey and a young stud in Dan Wheeler? Will the Mets have the best starting rotation in the NL East in the next couple of years?
(Eric R. from North Carolina)
Matt Harvey > Zack Wheeler > Noah Syndergaard > Rafael Montero >>> Dan Wheeler (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that any of these players will make the major league team out of spring training: Miguel Sano,Arismendy Alcantara, Franicsco Lindor, Alex Meyer, Noah Syndergaard
(temple from madison)
I wouldn't be surprised if Sano got a decent amount of playing time with the Twins this season but I wouldn't expect he'd make the team out of ST for, if nothing else, service time reasons. The Cubs already have Castro at short so there's no reason to bring up Alcantara, same with Lindor and the Indians. I'd be surprised if any of them made the majors out of ST, but crazier things have happened for sure. (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Noah Syndergaard is obviously the cream of the Mets pitching crop in the minors but what do you think of Rafael Montero?
(Jason from NY)
Montero is a nice prospect. He probably unfairly gets grouped in with the Harvey/Wheeler/Syndergaard conversation because he is on a similar timetable to the majors as those three, but he's a notch below. Back end starter, which is nothing to sneeze at. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Noah Syndergaard a top 3 pitching prospect for you?
(Joe from Amherst)
You can ran the top 5-6 pitching prospects in almost any order you prefer, but yes, he is among them. This is why I secretly hate prospect rankings. Syndergaard, Walker, Bradley, Gausman, Ventura, Giolito...they're all studs. Who cares who is ranked one spot above the other? I wish my team had any one of them (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Noah Syndergaard... What current or recent ML pitcher do you feel he most resembles?
(ironcityguys from Pittsburgh)
I don't think comps do a service to anyone really. I like Syndergaard a bunch though. I like his chances of being a #2 starter. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)With my first round pick in our prospect draft, I'm eying a pitcher. Archie Bradley, Masahiro Tanaka, Jonathan Gray, Mark Appel, Noah Syndergaard, Lucas Giolito, and Robert Stephenson are all still on the board. Which 2 or 3 are on your shortlist, and who do you pick & why? Thanks for the chat!
(Sara from Tacoma)
Oh man that's fun agonizing at the same time. Bradley/Giolito are my top two. Tanaka is probably my third because he'll pitch in the majors so soon. It depends on your team's timetable. If you're contending sooner, Bradley. If you can wait (because of depth or because you're bad) go with Giolito. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Fanstays question (wouldn't happen) A trade where the mets send Noah Syndergaard to the Dodgers for Kemp and some salary relief (say around 2-3 million off each year) is that possible.. Or mets would have to add another propsect/ ask for less salary relief. This more so helps see where Syndergaards value is at and how far (if so) Kemps value has fallen.
(MetsFaithful5 from Syracuse )
Hi Mets:

With Curtis Granderson in the fold, I don't see it happening. Matt Kemp is intriguing but also very risky and while the Mets have opened their purse strings somewhat this winter, I don't see them making this big of a splash financially. Noah Syndergaard is also their best prospect and they're probably not going to trade him straight up for an outfielder coming off of a big injury year. The entire scenario seems unlikely. While the Mets might not be as adamant as the Mariners have been about not moving Taijuan Walker, the price for Syndergaard is still likely to be very high. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Between Archie Bradley, Noah Syndergaard, and Jonathan Gray, how would you rank their ceilings/fantasy upside? ETAs? Bonus: For how long will we have to deal with 50 shades puns based on Gray's name (Sonny's as well... who also gets the "It's always sunny" puns).
(Jonah from Redwood)
Hi Jonah:

I would probably rank them in the order that you have them ranked, with Bradley and Syndergaard very close and Gray a little bit behind. Both Bradley and Syndergaard have ace potential, with Bradley a tick more likely to be that ace with Synergaard falling in as a #2. Gray looks more like a #2 to me, which certainly isn't shabby; I just don't see him as that #1 stud.

The puns are up to the masses. I didn't even think of the 50 shades of Gray thing, and as far as Sonny Gray goes I didn't see the It's Always Sunny comparison either. If anything saves us here from the puns, it's that the A's aren't high profile. (Mike Gianella)
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Higher ceiling/floor between Noah Syndergaard and Robert Stephenson, ETA irrelevant?
(Sara from Tacoma)
Both have number two type ceilings (which is crazy high); Syndergaard with the higher floor right now; ETA for Noah is late 2014; Stephenson the following season. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)After watching Noah Syndergaard blossom into one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, could the Blue Jays actually be stupid enough to consider sending Aaron Sanchez or Marcus Stroman to Chicago for two years of Jeff Sarmfhugjhkhjiza?
(Kyle from Ottawa, ON)
I hope that doesn't happen. It seems a bit reckless to me. For what its worth, I would take Stroman over Sanchez. (Jason Parks)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Per the mid-season Top 50, the top 10 Starting Pitching propects in baseball (that are still prospect eligible) were: Archie Bradley, Kevin Gausman, Taijuan Walker, Jameson Taillon, Dylan Bundy, Mark Appel, Robert Stephenson, Carlos Martinez, Noah Syndergaard, and Aaron Sanchez. What would an updated list look like? I assume Jonathan Gray would be somewhere in the middle of the pack, no?
(Jonah from Redwood)
I think there are some slight differences that you'd see here. Globally speaking, I think everyone recognizes that Noah Syndergaard has vaulted himself higher up a list of this nature. Speaking personally, I have always been on the lower end with my Dylan Bundy projections and I would push him down the list some. Gray would be in the mix toward the back of this pack for me, and that's not a slight against him, I just don't believe he is quite on par with some of the other names in this group. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has a more realistic chance at being a top end number two starter in the big leagues between Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler? Noah has a bigger, stronger body, while zack is more of a lean John Maine type body he never could remain healthy)
(MetsFaithful5 from Upstate NY)
I'm partial to Wheeler here. I think his stuff is a little more electric and will ultimately play a little bit higher than Syndergaard's. I expect both to be excellent MLB starters, though. (Mark Anderson)
2013-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Noah Syndergaard have ace potential? I remember you guys ranking him a high-6 on last years mets top ten Propsects.. I mean he dominated double A (take away that last start and his numbers were crazy). Or is his ceiling still a number 2? Also, from what we saw offensively from d'Arnaud, is it anything to worry about?
(MetsFaithful5 from Syracuse)
Zach Mortimer threw an ace projection on Syndergaard. Obviously that's aggressive, but that's how Mortimer views his talent. My guess is he's more likely to turn into a no. 2 starter, though that's true of every elite pitching prospect.

Regarding d'Arnaud, I wouldn't be too worried yet. We're talking about a rookie catcher learning a new league and a new staff while having a rough month at the plate. Without taking a closer look, I'd say the most important thing for him is staying healthy. If he does that I think he'll be okay. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)On many levels, Noah Syndergaard for Javier Baez makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?
(Trader Joe from Freeport, ME)
In real life or fantasy? In fantasy, I tend to default to the hitter over the pitcher, so I like Baez better at the moment. In reality, I'm not sure either team is going to make that deal. The Cubs love Baez (with good reason) while the Mets are also high on Syndergaard. The Mets are deep in pitching, but David Wright blocks Baez assuming Baez's future if at a corner. Maybe this is fair, but I think i'd rather have Baez and the hitter. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)By 2015, Noah Syndergaard will be _____ than Zack Wheeler and ______ than Matt Harvey?
(Peter from NY)
I'll go worse and better, but that's misleading. I think Wheeler's time in MLB this year will give him a leg up throughout 2014 and into 2015; an advantage Syndergaard could overcome by the end of 2015, thereby surpassing Wheeler at that point. With Harvey, I'm still convinced he goes under the knife so if we assume Syndergaard is on the mound in the big leagues at the end of 2014 and Harvey is rehabbing, then I'd have to say he's "better" at that point, but now I'm just playing with words and probably getting myself in trouble. Let's just say that's a tremendous rotation. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will the mets ever win another world series? Thanks
(Sd from Queens)
I don't think my crystal ball is quite that good. I will say that I'm rooting like hell for a Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard 1-2-3 rotation punch in a couple years. Let's hope Harvey comes back 100% and the other two stay healthy, because how fun would that be? (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)How many hands does one need to count the pitching prospects better than Noah Syndergaard?
(izzy2112 from New York)
I'm admittedly a huge Syndergaard fan, and probably more so than most others. But just one hand for me (so top five pitching prospect in the game). (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)When the season's over,Noah Syndergaard will climb up the charts like Zack Wheeler did.Right ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
Already covered Syndergaard on here, but we ranked him #23 on our mid-season top 50 (and #28 coming into this season), so there's not much more room to move up. He'll climb though. (Jason Cole)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank in order of ceiling: Carlos Martinez, Kevin Gausman, Jameson Taillon, Robert Stephenson, Noah Syndergaard, Lucas Giolito.
(AJ from Phoenix)
On ceiling alone: Gausman, Giolito, Taillon, Syndergaard, Martinez, Stephenson. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think the Blue Jays regret giving up Noah Syndergaard yet? I didn't mind trading d'Arnaud but I knew the day it was announced that Syndergaard was going to make our front office look foolish.
(Kyle Matte from Ottawa, ON)
Yes the Blue Jays regret giving up Syndergaard. I understand why the Blue Jays made the deal for R.A. Dickey, but Syndergaard is really really good. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Noah Syndergaard have "Ace" potential? Is Rafael Montero a Top 100 prospect in baseball?
(Sean from NY)
You should ask this to one of our prospect guys in the chat because those tiers "ace" or "top 100" etc. aren't really my lingo. I'd be very happy about both guys' seasons, especially Montero's strikeouts as he made a really big jump in the level of hitters he was facing at AA/AAA compared to high A. (Zachary Levine)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)More likely to improve, Aaron Sanchez' command or Noah Syndergaard's secondary stuff?
(Steve from Canada)
I like Syndergaard's secondary profile more than Sanchez's command profile. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dumber Baseball Player with Anti-Gay Slur made public? Yunel Escobar "eye-black" incident or Noah Syndergaard's Croc-related tweet?
(jlarsen from chicago)
Yunel easy. Pre-mediated garbage. Syndergaard's was 20-year old idiocy. There's no reason for it and it needs to be stamped out, but it's not nearly as stupid as what Yunel did. (Paul Sporer)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much progress has Noah Syndergaard with his secondaries this season? Seeing as he's a big, hard-throwing Texan, I value your opinion on him more than others
(RageOfSnider from Toronto)
His secondary stuff didn't develop at the rate I thought was possible, but I'm not jumping off the bandwagon. He has size, big arm strength, and a lot of time to find his stuff. Patience. (Jason Parks)
2012-07-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)would Toronto giving up one of the Lansing 3, one of Gose/Marsnick and another prospect get a sniff of Johnson from the Marlins?
(Mikeleelop from toronto)
The latest from Miami is that they're asking for a lot for JJ, but some combination of Justin Nicolino, Aaron Sanchez, Noah Syndergaard, and another OF prospect or two would definitely get their interest. The question would be whether Toronto would want to pay such a steep price for Johnson, who's proven to be brittle and inconsistent of late. The package Miami's asking for is being compared to the Mark Teixiera deal, but I think Tex was a much more valuable commodity. If they'd tried to make this trade two seasons ago, they'd get that high price. I'm just not sure if it's worth Toronto to shed so much talent for JJ when they've got a ton of pitching talent just a year or two from the bigs. (Michael Street)
