2016 C.J. Riefenhauser bounced between Durham and St. Petersburg around a stint on the disabled list with an shoulder inflammation. Coincidently, it is the first time a synonym for heat or fire has been mentioned in regards to him throwing a baseball.
2015 C.J. Riefenhauser missed time with a strained oblique, pushing him down the depth chart on his return, but his late-season call-up indicates that the Rays still have him and his nasty breaking ball in their plans.
2014 The top-heavy, chest-and-shoulders lefty, whose promise got him a gig in the Futures Game, was plain mean to same-siders in 2013 (.122 average against across Double- and Triple-A). At his best, he commands a low-90s fastball and nasty slider down in the zone, and he has a changeup to annoy righties, too, although LOOGY life might await him in the majors. The Rays traded his fellow Triple-A bullpen lefty, Frank De Los Santos, to Chicago last September, then added Riefenhauser to the 40-man in November, formalizing his position in the pecking order. You're likely to see his super-long name straining the shoulders of a Rays jersey this season.

2015-09-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any idea why the Rays stopped shuttling relievers between Durham and St. Pete? Any credence to the idea that they didn't want all those guys collecting big league pay checks and service time if they weren't back down for 20 days?
(Sandy Kazmir from America)
I have no idea. Although, when your top alternatives are Kirby Yates and C.J. Riefenhauser, I guess there's no point inconveniencing others. (R.J. Anderson)
