BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Few teams have managed to rummage around in the league-wide yard sale that is the Rule 5 draft and emerge with as many impact players as the Phillies in the last decade-plus—credit AGM Mike Ondo for a lot of that—and Herrera is the latest antique vase bought for $2.50 and a smile. Shifted from second base to center field, where he learned on the fly, "El Torito" showed some route and first-step deficiencies that his athleticism compensated for, though those missteps seemed fewer and further between by September. Herrera is bound to see lots more playing time in 2016, though whether 2015 was a fluky peak or the start of a long and successful major-league career remains to be seen.

2016-06-20 16:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the best team you have seen in your scouting life?
(Larry from NC)
I will preface this by saying that I have not been scouting for that long. I have probably been unaware of the talent of other teams while at games.

But I will say 2014 Myrtle Beach Pelicans. I did my summer internship down there and attended far too many games. Here are the major leaguers from that team: Joey Gallo, Cody Ege, Odubel Herrera, Hanser Alberto, Alexander Claudio, Keone Kela, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Andrew Faulkner, Abel De Los Santos.

While these guys are not in the big leagues yet, they will be soon: Nick Williams, Lewis Brinson, Chris Bostick, Jorge Alfaro, Ryan Cordell, Jose LeClerc, Samuel Wolff

And some other interesting guys with value: Preston Beck, Victor Payano, Kellin Deglan, Michael De Leon, Christopher Garia, Chad Bell

Man was that team loaded... (Steve Givarz)
2016-05-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should we be selling high on Odubel Herrera or is this production sustainable? The dude has had a heck of a year! No jogging to 1st base though Odubel.
(fightingmoose from Manitoba)
He is so far below his age level I think it's possible. He is definitely going to struggle at points. But I see no reason it isn't sustainable. (Jim Walsh)

2016-01-14 20:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Odubel Herrera and his development short and long term ?
(caseyj15 from Medford, Or)
Herrera strikes me as a second division regular who will likely have to job share for a contender. He'd be a great utility guy but as he's shown he could certainly be a starter. I don't see a lot of ceiling beyond what he did last year and I think what you see is mostly what you get developmentally but he's got a good chance of repeating that or at least not falling off too much. (Mike Gianella)
2015-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you could only choose one, who do you choose among Odubel Herrera, Joc Pederson and Delino Deshields and why?
(Pete from Vancouver)
Pederson. Yes, he was dreadful at the end of 2015, but this is still a guy who can get on base, play okay defense in center and hit for power/steal bases. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-10-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Delino Deshields or Odubel Herrera as the perfectly cromulent league average-ish centerfielder of choice?
(Paul from DC)
Herrera... I like the odd stance. (Sahadev Sharma)
2015-09-21 20:30:00 (link to chat)Can you rank these OFs for future: Eddie Rosario, Odubel Herrera, Aaron Altherr, Preston Tucker, Pete O'Brien.
(ColeWhittier from Pasadena, CA)
I'd go Rosario, Herrera, Tucker, Altherr, O'Brien. (Bret Sayre)
