BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Petricka is exactly the sort of player new GM Rick Hahn could use as trade bait. Highly regarded for his ability to throw hard, go deep in games, and generate groundballs, with a curve and change that are considered to have plus potential, he makes scouts salivate but hasn't shown the hoped-for performance. Of course, two years from now, after a guy like this has lost his shine, he'd be exactly the sort of player the White Sox might acquire, expecting their coaching staff to fix the flaws, like Petricka's terrible control. In short, he could turn things around at any time, but he does need to start throwing strikes to have value, no matter how good the scouting reports are.
2012 Petricka’s first full pro season was a mixed bag, as the former second round pick showed off a heavy mid-90s fastball that hitters continually pounded into the dirt and never contracted a case of the walksies, but he made little progress with his slider or changeup. Despite his college pedigree, Petricka will likely move through the system one rung at a time, and the club will give him every opportunity to remain a starter, though his stuff may play better in relief. At this point, Petricka’s fortune reads “Ask Again Later.”
2011 Selecting tall, lanky Jacob Petricka out of Indiana State in the second round of last summer's draft was an endorsement of a fastball that touches 95; though raw, a future in the pen awaits.
