YearComment
2005 Unlike other recent pickups, Adams cost the Red Sox a decent prospect in John Hattig, in exchange for 27 forgettable innings. While the Sox have done a good job of acquiring risky hitters, they've gone through more borderline bullpen arms than Jeanne Zalasko has hairstyles. Non-tendered, Adams is a free agent at press time.
2004 Adams was one of the three Phillie relief pitchers who were any good last year, and he managed to lead the team appearances even though he only pitched once in the final month. The second half of 2003 was rough on Adams, involving one trip to the DL for a strained muscle, one surgery for bone chips in his elbow, and one guilty plea for disorderly conduct. He's gone to Toronto as one of several mercs stocking the Jays' refurbished pen.
2003 Signed to be a starter, Terry Adams was extremely ineffective in that role. Once the Phillies moved him to the bullpen, he returned to what he has been, a very effective setup man. The starter experiment was one worth trying, but it seems clear that Adamsís value is as a reliever.
2002 Adams moved into the rotation in response to a bevy of injuries and responded well. He's likely to be in a similar role in 2002, except that he'll start the season in the rotation and move to the bullpen if he can't handle the workload. Adams has a drastic home/away split that would worry me in terms of making him a starteróa 3.46 ERA in Chavez Ravine, 5.09 on the road. Very dangerous, and another obvious pickup for Ed Wade and the Phillies.
2001 Terry Adams is pretty much the ground-ball-inducing workhorse every team needs in the seventh and eighth innings. A 20-inning April preceded a rough patch, after which he was fine. He's never had consecutive good seasons, so tread carefully.
2000 This year's health problems? He started off on the disabled list with a strained elbow, went back on it a few months later with a strained groin and finished up scuffling down the stretch. Throwing more than 100 innings in his rookie season and making 143 appearances in his first two years probably didn't help him stay healthy. We're still researching usage patterns for relievers and hope to have some findings in the next year or two. Adams was traded to the Dodgers in the Ismael Valdes deal and will help Alan Mills set up Jeff Shaw.
1999 Adams has serious mechanical problems, constantly flying open in his delivery. For a guy who throws as hard as he does, it also doesnít help that he almost never works the inside corner. Adamsí failure to develop has been mentioned as one of the reasons the Cubs let pitching coach Phil Regan walk away.
1998 Maybe itís easy to forget because of the sentiment ďthank God he isnít Mel Rojas,Ē but Adams struggled badly last year. Iím convinced a large part of the problem is that he should never be used in partial innings or make appearances for less than an inning. Itís hard not to like his combination of power, groundballs and keeping the ball in the park.
1997 Heís got the big, wild heater and unlike many modern relievers, Adams can go several innings when heís on. Heís already clamoring publicly for the closerís role. An organization can either say this is a nice, aggressive attitude, or label him an attitude problem because he should just accept whatever role heís given. Since Rigglemanís style is usually low-key, it shouldnít be a problem.
1996  He's considered the closer of the future, and he's compared to Goose Gossage in one of those stock "compare the kid to someone special" scout sound bites. Adams' success this season was because he started to mix a slider effectively with his fastball. He has a very good shot at earning a spot with the Cubs this spring.
