DateQuestionAnswer
2014-09-10 12:00:00 (link to chat)Wil Myers appears dazed and confused in many of his at bats. What's your analysis of his problems and his likely future??
(Tommy from Tampa)
That's a good way of putting it. He looks uncomfortable at the plate, and is pulling out, dropping his shoulder. It has not been pretty. He looks unbalanced at the plate. I think he will end up piecing it back together somewhat, but I am lower on him than in the past. The majors is all about adjustments, and we need to see them now. (Tucker Blair)
2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you be surprised if Joc Pederson becomes a more valuable fantasy player than Wil Myers? How do you value Pederson moving forward?
(Jeff from Des Moines)
I wouldn't be surprised becaue Pederson runs and Myers (for the most part) doesn't. I'd say Pederson is a $15 or so player initially with a $25 ceiling. (Mike Gianella)
2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Wil Myers has struck out a lot since returning from the DL but he has also taken walks and looked more patient than he did before the wrist injury. If this is a true development with him, it has to be good news, doesn't it?
(RatedRookie from Atlanta)
It could be a development, but I'd like to see more at bats before jumping to any definitive conclusions. He's better than what he did in the first half of this year. (Mike Gianella)
2014-08-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Wil Myers worth a pick up for ROS? Would have to drop Crawford, Span or JD Martinez. Also, Odorizzi or Stroman ROS? Thanks
(Hawk from Waukegan)
Sure! (Matthew Kory)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Nick Franklin? Seems like the Rays will be motivated to showcase him soon as part of the Price haul right?
(Friedman from Florida)
I voiced this on TINO, but I don't think he necessarily sees time this year. They were patient with Wil Myers in terms of making sure he was doing the things they wanted before he hit his way to the majors. I don't think Franklin has that type of bat, so he's going to have to be even more refined to make it to the majors. There's not a spot that's ready made for him either, so I'm not sure what their rush would be. I don't think they feel any pressure to do anything but what's best for this team. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it crazy to think that Joc Pederson becomes a better player than Wil Myers?
(Hal from Lexington )
Not at all. (Jeff Moore)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)I'm keeping Rendon, Longoria, Rizzo, Scherzer, and Sonny Gray. I have 2 more keeper slots. Who would you keep out of Alcantara, Garrett Richards, Stroman, Arrieta, and Wil Myers? It's a 12 tm 6x6 with tbs and qs as the extra cats. Thanks.
(Thomas from Staten Island)
Myers and Stroman, though Alcantara is not a bad option. (Ben Carsley)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul,my friend offered me Wil Myers for either Kipnis or Wong.....would you give up one of these players for Myers????thanks
(John from Boston)
I could see it for Kipnis, but I'd probably just hold Myers unless I desperately needed someone playing now (Paul Sporer)
2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Paul, sorry, would you trade Wil Myers for Kolton Wong???
(John from Boston)
Nope (Paul Sporer)
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)I want to acquire Homer Bailey. I think Heyward is too much to offer. Am I wrong? Also is Wil Myers a better offer? Is Adam Eaton too low for Homer?
(Chris from Baltimore)
I wouldn't trade Myers or Heyward for Bailey. Eaton is probably too low, but you can try. You're missing a tier in between these options that would be more fair. (Ben Carsley)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Wil Myers - one year wonder or simply working through an adjustment phase??
(Tommy from Tampa)
Adjustment phase. This type of thing happens frequently. He's trying to yank everything on the outer half of the plate to LF. Myers has big, big power, and he's becoming pull happy, a quick glance at the spray chart tells you that. He's hitting .184 with no power against breaking stuff, and .129 against against offspeed. He's seen a lot of stuff soft away, and having trouble laying off. The bat to ball is excellent, so I think he makes an adjustment and hits his ceiling. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are organizations like BAL, ARI just bad at developing pitching prospects like how KC is bad with hitting prospects? Or is it just bad luck with bust prospects?
(norwun from NYC)
In general, I would say that most of those sorts of reputations are vastly overblown. There is a ton of luck involved and sometimes you hit a bad stretch for a long period of time. Sometimes organizations have strange philosophies that make you scratch your head - like Baltimore's refusal to let any of their pitchers throw a cutter but drafting of a pitcher whose best pitch is a cutter (Bundy), but I don't think that's why Bundy got hurt. There's just bad luck involved.

Some reputations are just flat out wrong, too. KC has developed Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler, and Sal Perez, and they even get credit for Wil Myers. Just because Mike Moustakas stinks doesn't mean they can't develop hitters. (Jeff Moore)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Obligatory Gregory Polanco question- just your best, wild guess- is he up before Super 2?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I don't think so. It's sort of like the Wil Myers situation last year: Yeah, it stinks that they can't bring up their top prospect, but they have to weigh the future, too. How much is four or five weeks of Polanco worth to that team as it stands? (R.J. Anderson)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Oscar Taveras were called up tomorrow, would you offer Wil Myers for him straight up?
(Joe from St. Louis)
I'd prefer Myers for sure (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)In my Fantasy Baseball, 10 team, 8x8 category h2h league, I received an offer that I need your help with. I'd be getting Bautista and Mauer for my Posey and Wacha. I can only put Bautista in RF, but I already have Wil Myers who also only qualifies for RF. Myers is more durable obviously and has a high ceiling. Should I still do it?
(BillyBob from Brazil)
I need to know what the other three categories are but I think I pull trigger on this deal as I think the upside is higher on the Bautista/Mauer side. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who's been your biggest miss of the past few years?
(EricJ from SF)
Even though I was still high on him, Wil Myers comes to mind. It could still prove to be true, but I saw more of a solid-average to first division type, not an all-star caliber talent. I thought his weaknesses would get exploited and he would struggle to adjust. So far, I've been wrong with that assessment. You learn from it. (Jason Parks)
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)comparing the current group of Cubs hitting prospects to the former prospects of the Royals (Hosmer, Gordon, Moustakas), who would you or did you grade higher?
( Ali from Chicago)
That's an interesting question. I like the Cubs group a little better because I think Baez and Bryant are both as good or better than any of the Royals trio. The lack of plate discipline for Moustakas always scared me. If you include Sal Perez and Wil Myers into the conversation, however, it becomes a different story. (Jeff Moore)
2014-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everything I read suggests it best to be patient on Gausman. I have the opportunity to acquire him and Matt Harvey in a deal for Wil Myers and a 1st round pick in minor league draft. Thumbs up? For context, I am not really trying to win this year and I have Buxton, Polanco, Dahl, Soler coming up the ranks but Kyle Zimmer is my only arm I can dream on.
(aaronayoung from DC)
I guess if you're looking for the future, then go ahead. I don't like giving up seasons, but if it's already set that you're unlikely to compete in 2014, then you might as well build up 2015 & beyond (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Better bet for 2014 and beyond. Wil Myers or Jason Heyward?
(DServi4 from Maryland )
They're both excellent. Give me Heyward. I think he'll run more and I don't think we've seen the most of what he has to offer yet. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)16 team dynasty league. My current OF (3) is a combo of Leonys Martin, Wil Myers, BJ Upton, Nick Swisher, Mike Morse. Ive got an offer of George Springer for my Michael Wacha. Im up in the air on it as I think my rotation (Verlander, Teheran, Ian Kennedy, Chris Tillman, Jose Quintana and Ubaldo) can handle the loss but Im wondering how you see a deal like that shaking out long term? Springers hit tool worries me long term as I could see him being a .240 hitter which impacts his counting stats production as well. What do you see he and Wacha turning into?
(dzemens from Adrian, MI)
I think I would make that deal in a dynasty. Springer's average might never be great, but his power/speed combo in fantasy is enticing and a Raul Mondesi type wouldn't surprise me. I like Wacha a lot, but I see him as more of a 2/3 type than an ace. Springer might not be a top real life hitter but he could be in fantasy because of the speed. I'd make the deal. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has had more sex, Puig or Wil Myers
(Trevor Bauer from NY)
Myers' hair is a real problem. Puig's skin quality is a major plus. I think the answer is obvious. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-11-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)Brett Anderson's name keeps popping up in trade talks. The Blue Jays and Royals are apparently interested. And the A's have made no secret of their willingness to deal him. I guess I don't understand why, though. His value couldn't be lower than it is last year -- coming off a terrible, injury-plagued season. And with it unclear whether the A's will be able to re-sign Bartolo Colon, why reduce your pitching depth even more?
(Derek from Palo Alto)
Completely agree on his value, especially as he becomes expensive. Anderson's salary went up to $8 million this season (was $5.5 M last year), and his fragility is the worst-kept secret in baseball. The time to move him was last off-season, when there were rumors swirling that Anderson could be involved in a deal for Wil Myers. At least Anderson's injury last season was to his ankle, not his arm. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-10-28 18:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Addisson Russell making a big league impact next year? Seems the A's aren't afraid to push him aggressively and he responds each time... perhaps a call up around the time Wil Myers was this year? Could solve a serious lineup hole and push Lowrie to second
(Biscuits from San Jose)
It seems like a long shot. Russell spent all of 2013 at High A and while he was young for his level at 19, he wasn't promoted mid-year. The best case for Russell in 2014 would seem to be a mid-year promotion from Double-A to Triple-A in 2014 and a cup of coffee in the Majors in September. Sure, some guys get promoted from Double-A midyear, but my educated guess is that Russell isn't an impact guy next year. (Mike Gianella)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Since all my workers are distracted from working by your chat today, who will now be the top Rays prospect given the graduation of Wil Myers, Chris Archer, and injuries to Taylor Guerreri and Hak-Ju Lee?
(Da Boss from Bossland)
Good question. As you mentioned, graduations and injuries have killed them at the top. Of course, that's a good thing with the graduations, as Myers and Archer have played a key role (along with other guys like Torres) in the Rays contending this season. It might still be Lee. Jesse Hahn is up there if they can keep him healthy. He's not going to be no. 1 in their system this offseason, but Ryne Stanek was a great value pick with upside, I thought, and he's absolutely one to watch. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Taylor Guerreri down with TJ, Hak-Ju Lee also hurt most of the year, who is now the new Rays number 1 prospect?
(Mike from Tampa)
Well, I will preface this by saying the graduations of Wil Myers and Chris Archer have been very positive this year. Odorizzi has contributed just a bit as well. But it's no doubt a system in transition right now with the graduations and now injuries. I'd have to think about it a little longer on the no. 1 prospect. Ryne Stanek wasn't exactly the model of consistency at Arkansas this past spring, but he can flash the pure stuff to at least be in that discussion once he gets going. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)What would a typical Myers full season stat line look like in his prime? Same question for Rendon. Thanks!
(Cal Guy from Cal)
We talked about Wil Myers on the pod. I think you're probably looking at 25-30 HR with a .270 or .280 batting average. Anthony Rendon's harder to call because I don't think we've seen the best he has to offer, but I'd guess 20-25 HR with a .290 BA. There's a lot more volatility with Rendon for the reasons I mentioned. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)Of the potential AL teams, which do you think is best constructed to make a run in the postseason? It's got to be Tampa with its pitching, right?
(Dave from Madison)
I picked the Rays to win the World Series preseason, and why change now. The pitching in Tampa is top notch. I fear for Wil Myers' safety if he keeps utilizing the 80 bat flip as one scout explained in a text yesterday. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)He is no longer an official prospect, but is this what we can expect from Myers or is he playing a bit over his head?
(Cal Guy from Cali)
Wil Myers can hit, he really can hit. I wasn't sure he would hit this much this fast, but I never doubted the ability. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)How far appart are you on Wil Myers and Nick Castellanos? I don't feel the gap is all that great and Castellanos is a year younger raking at AAA!
(Hector from Detroit)
I'm not sure there is a gap. I find Myers somewhat overrated to be honest. I see him as a Nick Swisher (which is very good and if he meets that ceiling, it's a tremendous success), but the perception seems to be far higher. (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Wil Myers for Byron Buxton in a 5x5 rotisserie keeper league?
(Mike from CT)
I might be in the minority here, because of how close Myers is to the majors, but yes, I would make this trade. I'm a sucker for upside in dynasty/keeper leagues, and Buxton's upside might be a top-three player in fantasy with across-the-board contributions. Myers will help in several categories, potentially at an elite level, but Buxton has a chance to be special. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-06-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Wil Myers heating up right before MLB's "Super 2" cut-off combined with the Rays high-powered offense a "Perfect Storm" scenario for Friedman & Maddon? While he is swinging a hot bat, he likely won't be depended on as most prospects are when waiting for in-season call-ups.
(jlarsen from chicago)
The problem is, where is he going to play? We discussed the S2 deadline in the latest episode released today http://www.baseballprospectus.com/blog/fantasy_hour/ including Myers specifically so I'll point you toward that for more coverage. (Paul Sporer)
2013-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Most dissapointing prospect so far?
(Not Ben from Twitter, Louisiana)
Non-injury division? Maybe Wil Myers. That's probably the answer to a different question, because there are others who have been worse compared to their expectation. I just figured that the combination of Myers plus a really bad outfield at the major league level in Tampa Bay would make it so that it was a daily story that Myers wasn't being called up yet. It certainly hasn't been. (Zachary Levine)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Wil Myers batting average against right handers (.204!) a reason to hit the panic button?
(Ron Burgandy from Mississippi)
No. But I wasn't as high on Myers as some coming into the year. I like the bat; I like the player. I just don't think he's a game-changer at the highest level. I think major league arms can exploit some of the holes in his swing and approach. I see a future ~.275 hitter with 20+ bomb potential, which isn't anything to discount. But I don't see a future role 7 (all-star type). (Jason Parks)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who gets the call up first? Wil Myers or Chris Archer?
(Annoyned Fan from TPA)
I'd say Myers because it's easier to see his path. The Super Two deadline is about five weeks away, which seems like the big thing holding him back. With Archer the Rays need to suffer an injury or send a pitcher packing. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)You think Despaigne will come out before Dariel Abreu? Also Who does Stryker Trahan compare to?
(Abnergreen from Puerto Rico)
If I knew the order in which Cuban National Team players were going to defect, I'd start playing the lottery more often. Trahan is a Wil Myers type of catcher, in that he'll keep playing the position until Arizona either moves him off because he can't cut it or because they just want his bat faster. Offensively, he's not Wil Myers, but could hit for solid average and power down the road. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)After some underwhelming performances by current starters, do you see players like Avasail Garcia, who's ready to start a rehab assignment, or Anthony Gose carving out a significant role this season? Who are your favorite "waitin' in the wings for an opportunity" players currently? Thanks...
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
Sorry to say that Wil Myers tops the list as he finishes out his sentence in service time prison.

In the NL, I've heard good things on the outfielder the Phillies have come up the pipeline in A ball. I think this Delmon Young kid could do some things if only given the chance. (Zachary Levine)
2013-04-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Can you think of any guys who are currently in the minors that have a good chance of coming up and making an impact in the majors this year? Also, when we get through the Super Two deadline, which prospects do you think will be called up?
(Marco from California)
Three names that immediately jump to mind, Marco: Nolan Arenado (3B, COL), Wil Myers (OF, TBR), and Anthony Rendon (INF, WSH). Arenado should be ready to take over at the hot corner for the Rockies in the near future. The Rays might not be able to keep Myers in the minors for much longer, unless their current position players turn things around at the plate. And with Danny Espinosa scuffling, the Nats could look for an internal upgrade at second base, which a healthy Rendon could provide. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)14 team league, 15 keepers, points league, I'm rebuilding from scratch. Trade Howard+Brett Anderson+Luis heredia for Wil Myers+Billy Hamilton?
(Joe from C-Town)
If on a full rebuild, then I like it. Hamilton has the potential to alter your team's draft strategy for years, eliminating the need to draft SB's, and Myers has the bat to replace Howard by next season. I am a big fan of Anderson, but his trade value is tied to his health, and it might be wise to deal him early in the season. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Cory ..... thanks for the chat. Which hot prospects do you think will be "held back" in the minors for Super-2 considerations this year? Taveras? Others?
(dianagram from VORGville)
Well, to be fair, Taveras doesn't have a clear-cut path to playing time, with Holliday and Beltran on the corners and Jay as the primary/platoon CF. But he will probably hit his way into a job this year. Wil Myers, Nolan Arenado, Jurickson Profar and Kolten Wong are just a few others who quickly come to mind. Like Taveras, Profar may indeed be ready right now, but there's no clear-cut everyday job for him right now so I can see the Rangers giving him a few more weeks in Triple-A while they figure it out. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Some impatient owners who drafted Wil Myers and Jurickson Profar have already dropped them to waivers -- who should I use my No. 2 Waiver claim on (if anyone), and who will have the best 2013 campaign?
(CubicleMan from Work?)
Go for Profar. Given equal PT this year, I'd expect Profar to have more value, given his positional value and SB edge. To be fair though, the path to playing time is a lot more obvious for Myers... it's not like Kelly Johnson is going to get in his way. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-03-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty league trade, my lineup: Arencibia, Frazier(1b), Espinosa(2b), Miggy(3b), Rutledge(SS), Cuddyer(OF), Melky(OF), Marte(OF), De Aza(OF), Moustakas(DH), Samardzija(SP), Lester(SP), Morrow(SP), Volquez(SP), Bauer(SP). I am looking to acquire a #1SP and this trade has been proposed to me: Felix Hernandez, Wil Myers and Billy Hamilton. Should I stand pat??? I also have Profar, Olt, Taveras and Zunino along with Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman, Chris Archer and Kyle Zimmer waiting on the bench. Pull the trigger....I an torn.
(MerleDixon from Fantasy prison)
So you give those two for Felix? It's completely fair and fits your desires for a #1. Try to give one of the SP prospects instead of Hamilton, but if s/he says no, then I'd do the proposed deal. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)In a 16 team 6x6 keeper league (5x5 with OPS for hitters, BB for pitchers), I can keep three players. Already sold on keeping 2 stud pitchers for really cheap 1 year deals, but want to balance that out with bats for longer contracts. The other options for my third and final keeper are Wil Myers at $1 for 2 years (2013 and 2014) and Will Middlebrooks at $1 for 2 years. Am I crazy to lean towards Myers even though he's likely to miss at least April, and possibly all of May? I like Middlebrooks a lot, but his contact issues and plate discipline do worry me a little. What are your thoughts? Thanks
(cedis81 from the internets)
For me it's Myers, and this is even before the Middlebrooks injury tonight. I think Myers is going to be up sooner rather than later and even in 5/6th of a season can earn as much as Middlebrooks. Myers has a chance to be an impact player while I think Middlebrooks is going to be more of a complimentary - albeit solid - player. I'd take Myers here. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is it realistic to say that Wil Myers has ZERO chance of getting called up until the projected Super-Two deadline has passed?
(GoneTroutFishin from NJ)
less than zero unless he signs a deal. (Jason Collette)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Myers absolutely tears it up this spring do you think he still gets sent down due to cost saving considerations?
(cal guy from stuck in cal)
I think it would take a combination of an enormous spring and a couple of injuries for Wil Myers to make the Rays on Opening Day, both because of the Super Two and free-agent clock elements, and because Andrew Friedman indicated last week that he thinks Myers still has adjustments to make in the upper minors.

Matt Joyce should be able to hold down the fort in left field, especially with a slew of platoon options available to Joe Maddon. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Out of the group of: Oscar Taveras, Jurickson Profar, Anthony Rizzo and Wil Myers. If given the same number of MLB ABs, who do you foresee having the most HRs, highest WARP/VORP and awards if each remain with their current organization in a 6 yr span?
(jlarsen from chicago)
With the caveat that I'm not an expert prospect guy, I'd say most homers Myers, highest AVG/OBP Taveras, and highest WARP Profar. Doesn't hurt that Profar has already arrived, though he's also -0.2 WARP in the hole from last season. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)What do you see from Wil Myers both this year and in the future in terms of slash and HR?
(bmmolter from Mass.)
He will have an adjustment period at the big league level and may not show his true talent right out of the gate. Once he settles in, I think you might see him in the .280/.370/.530 range with 25 bombs, but I'm far from an expert at predicting stats. (Mark Anderson)
2012-12-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which pure hitting prospect blossoms into the better overall player: Wil Myers, Oscar Taveras, Nick Castellanos?
(Kai from SLO)
Oscar Taveras. (Chris Mellen)
2012-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Barring an contract extension or unforeseen change in organizational approach, Wil Myers will start the year in AAA. With a call-up ranging anywhere from late-April to June, is Myers draftable in later rounds or do you try to sneak him as a waiver-claim in late April and hope that he gets an early call-up?
(jlarsen from chicago)
Definitely depends on league size and roster construction. If I have precious few reserve spots like ESPN where the default is three, then I'm passing in anything fewer than 14-15 tm mixers. (Paul Sporer)
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be the better pro, Profar or Wil Myers?
(Alex from Anaheim)
Profar is better suited to have a more immediate impact due to his position and his ability to play that position well. Myers bat can be more impactful if his development continues in Tampa. Safer bet is Profar, though I really like my mind's eye picture of Myers in 2014-2017. (Nick Faleris)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Geoff, I was offered Gerrit Cole for Wil Myers in a keeper league. Your gut reaction: make the deal?
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
Hi Keith, thanks for the question. These are fun deals and I could see this one from either side. Cole comes with greater risk because pitchers, but what a ceiling. I think I'd give Myers for him. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Since there's many different opinions on Wil Myers, what do you think of one of the most touted prospects whose upside ranges from slightly-above average to "stud"?
(jlarsen from chicago)
In one of my "Reading Lolita in Teheran" pieces, I profiled Myers. The knock on him was that he needed to be more aggressive and swing more. In 2012, he did so and it paid off big for him. That's a really good sign. (Russell Carleton)
2012-12-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why the strange C -> 3B -> CF path for Wil Myers? Not that I don't think it's a correct path to be testing where your prospect can stick, all those positions add value to his bat
(Guillermo from Montevideo, Uruguay)
His bat was more advanced than his glove, and it takes a lot of developmental time, focus, and energy to stick behind the plate. It's quite common to see young players start up the middle ad fan out as they mature. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you believe KC would be crazy to trade Myers in a deal for Dickey since Dickey wont turn them into contenders by himself?
(Daniel from NY)
Daniel, I would think twice ... maybe three times before including Wil Myers in any deal, and especially one for a 38-year-old pitcher (Dickey's Cy Young performance in 2012 notwithstanding). Myers has a chance to be a perennial All-Star, and the potential gap between him and the alternatives in right field could negate any gains in the rotation. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-11-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Dan, thanks for the chat. If you are Dayton Moore, do you even begin to think about trading a guy like Wil Myers for Jon Lester or James Shields?
(Chris from AZ)
You have to always consider a deal for an established, high-end starting pitcher, especially when your side is moving an unproven minor leaguer. That doesn't mean that you have to do it. Myers' value will never be higher than it is right now. Those two starters you mentioned might not even be available, so don't get too excited. It all comes down to what your other options are, and how much they will cost in terms of players, money, and commitment. The Royals are on the brink of some really good things, and that fan base is so damn ready for a winning product. Dayton Moore has a good feel for the game, and learned from one of the greatest GM's ever in John Schuerholz. (Dan Evans)
2012-11-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who are the next wave of prospects that are going to be MLB all-stars and upper-echelon players? Trevor Bauer? Billy Hamilton? Wil Myers?
(Steve G. from Athens, OH)
As you know, there is no such thing as a can't miss prospect, but all three are in that conversation (though Hamilton will be a bit more valuable in fantasy than real life). You can add to the list Dylan Bundy, Jurickson Profar, Manny Machado, and Gerrit Cole, among others. Keep an eye on Jason Parks and his prospect teams' Top 10 lists and their eventual Top 100 list. (Derek Carty)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you're the Mariners and you have the chance to get Wil Myers, who would you be willing to part with?
(Novler from B'ham)
Any one player in the system not named Walker or Zunino -- Z can't be traded -- plus another piece or two. For Gordon, I'd move Walker. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-11-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Shouldn't the question of a Royals-Rays trade be Wil Myers plus a throw-in for David Price?
(@DrTokuBall from Kansas City )
As Sam said on our podcast the other day, in the unlikely event that a Myers trade happens, Tampa Bay would seem to make the most sense as a destination, though I don't think Price would be the likeliest pitcher to go back to KC. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-11-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)This business about the Royals trading Wil Myers is nonsense, isn't it? He's just the shiny new object that all of a sudden everybody has fixated on, so they think that he's attainable.
(Chris from between the keyboard and the chair)
Yes, most likely. R.J. Anderson wrote a great article earlier this week about what it might mean if he were traded, but as Sam and I discussed on the podcast, this is probably just a matter of a team being willing to listen to offers because, well, why wouldn't you be? (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-10-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)With all the breakout seasons from several rookies this year, what rookies do you see potential big seasons from next year?
(Rockford from Treeline)
You mentioned Shelby Miller and Wily Peralta earlier. Among pitchers, I think we'll see a much better showing from Tyler Skaggs and Casey Kelly in the National League, and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing Dylan Bundy in the AL. At the plate, I'll go with Jurickson Profar, Wil Myers, and perhaps toward the end of the year, a cameo from Billy Hamilton. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-10-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospects do you see being major fantasy players next year?
(Jordan from St. Elsewhere)
Billy Hamilton is supposed to see time in the outfield in the AFL this year, and his stolen base ability could make him an immediate impact player. I love Wil Myers and Oscar Taveras, as well as Jurickson Profar. I'm not sure how the Nationals will handle Anthony Rendon with Ryan Zimmerman entrenched at third, but he has some potential to get to the bigs and make an impact quickly. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a more handsome prospect in the minors than Jake Marisnick?
(Alan from Asia)
Have you seen Wil Myers? (Jason Parks)
2012-09-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were a betting man, which OF prospect would you bet on having the better career; Oscar Taveras or Wil Myers?
(ChrisHopcroft from Glasgow)
Myers, but best not to bet on such things at all unless you really have to. (Colin Wyers)
2012-08-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Royals have said that Wil Myers will stay with Omaha as long as they remain in the playoffs. Last year Omaha's last playoff game was September 19. I wouldn't count on Myers this year at all.
(Chris from Omaha)
Well there we go. Those of you who have stashed Myers, keep a close eye on Omaha's playoff run. (Derek Carty)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek- which rookies currently in the minors do you see having the biggest impact this season? Any do you see any of them as upgrades from say Cameron Maybin or Ted Lilly (bottom of my roster)? Thanks
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
At this point, it's pretty much all about opportunity. The Trouts and Harpers of the world are already here, and now it becomes a waiting game for a lot of guys. With Tabata getting demoted, that time could be now for a guy like Starling Marte. Some other names to consider: Wil Myers, Ryan Lavarnway (if traded out of Boston), Danny Hultzen, Jake Odorizzi, Jedd Gyorko, Johnny Giavotella, Mike Olt, Travis Snider. It's a gamble dropping an established big leaguer for one of those guys, but in a shallower league where they're just bench players anyway, gambling on some upside isn't a bad idea. (Derek Carty)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)I'm looking to stash a player in the minors that isn't expected to produce at the MLB level until late 2012/early 2013. Who are the guys you would consider?
(patvijay from Chicago)
Definitely start with the list I gave in question 3. You could add Travis D'Arnaud, Shelby Miller, Gary Brown, Nolan Arenado. It sounds like you might be in a shallower league, though, so if most of these guys are available and you're just grabbing one, I'd probably have to go with Wil Myers. (Derek Carty)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everyone in Royals land is drooling over the production of production of Wil Myers. The problem is most fans simply think that he can move to CF and solve all of the team's problems at once. I've heard many people say that Myers will be stuck to the corners in the big leagues, but what exactly is he lacking that prevents him from playing Center? #want
(Zach Brady from Kansas City)
Most center fielders at the major league level are plus runners, with the first-step quickness and instincts to cover a wide swath of real estate. It's not a knock on Myers to say he's a very good athlete but not the type that can excel at a premium defensive position like CF. He will be a very good corner guy, and with his bat, he could develop into an all-star caliber player. (Jason Parks)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have most of my FAAB budgeted in my keeper league for late-season prospect call ups. Guys like Hultzen, Bauer, Skaggs, and Arenado are all taken already. Who's a good bet to be called up that's not on everyone's radar (that's worth a sizable bid)?
(Don H. from Oak Park)
I'm assuming you can't bid on guys in-season until they're recalled? Anthony Rizzo, Jed Gyorko, Julio Teheran are pretty good bets for call-ups this year. Maybe Andrelton Simmons if Pastornicky fails. Leonys Martin could be up at some point late, especially if we see some Texas injuries (Hamilton and Cruz are bound to go down at some point). Wil Myers could get a September call-up. Matt Harvey could too. (Derek Carty)
2012-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better long-term, Wil Myers or Jurickson Profar?
(Steve from Dallas)
Profar, though I think both will be very good. Profar has the positional scarcity edge on Myers. Myers, fully healthy, is showing his potential so far this year. He's a beast. (Paul Sporer)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is going on with Wil Myers? He seemingly went from a walk and contact / high OBP approach to a high K rate slugger? Any murmurings about a change in approach?
(ChaCha from Kansas City)
Speaking of Kevin, I just asked him about this. His answer: "More walks isn't always a good thing, fewer isn't always a bad thing. He needed a little more see ball/hit ball mentality." So now you're reading KG even if you didn't click on that link earlier.

Speaking of more walks not necessarily being a good thing: How about Emilio Bonifacio? Bonifacio is hitting second in the Marlins' order this season, and to his credit, he's seeing more pitches and walking more often. He also still hasn't had an extra-base hit. As in, a .000 ISO, after 135 PA, and his BABIP is down. You know what they say about correlation and causation, but maybe Bonifacio is better when he's up there hacking. Even patient hitters don't go to the plate trying to walk. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)The ETA for Wil Myers is 2012, but Gordon just had a breakout season and the Royals signed Fancoeur to an extension. What is the plan for Myers? Would you rather have him or Domonic Brown?
(Wendy from Madrid)
2012 is possible, but Myers might not be a full-time contributor until 2013. At that point, you can re-evaluate the outfield situation. The Royals need arms more than bats, so a trade could always clear space.

I'd take Myers over Brown. Myers is going to be a 6/6 type of hitter. (Jason Parks)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Royals have been using Hosmer in RF a bit this spring so they don't have to bench Billy Butler during interleague. Adam Foster tweeted last night that Hosmer is already a better defensive OF'er than Wil Myers. You buy? (Hosmer has only had two plays in right.)
(geo from lunch)
Hosmer's a very good athlete and a mature player, but I think it's a bit sensational to make that suggestion on such a small viewing sample. Some people just like to say things to get people talking. I get it. Hosmer might be a better defensive outfielder than Myers, but I've only seen a very small sample size. He certainly has the tools to be better. I've seen a lot of Myers and I don't think he's terrible out there. (Jason Parks)
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you see from Wil Myers? Similar to the previously mentioned Montero comment (~300, 30 hrs)? Thanks Jason. Your candor and facial hair are an inspiration.
(Humbert Humbert from On the road)
My facial hair is a lazy two-week beard; not much to brag on. Myers could end up in that statistical ballpark, yes (emphasis on could). (Jason Parks)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)You had a lot of great things to say about Wil Myers, but you tweeted that he's not a top 10. Really?
(KCLoyal from work)
Really. I have a lot of great things to say about prospects who are not among the top 10 in all of baseball. It's hardly an insult. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)On your MLU the other day you said Wil Myers is getting great reports from the AFL - care to elaborate? I know the numbers have been good there, but I know enough not to really trust AFL numbers.
(Rob from Alaska)
He just finally looks healthy and comfortable. That infection bothered him much of the season, and while I'm not ready to give him a complete mulligan, it was a factor. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What happened to Wil Myers?
(Bill from ON)
Assorted injuries and developmental hurdles. Didn't set the world on fire and the ball didn't explode off the bat in '11 like it did in '10, but he's still super young and his projections haven't changed (at least for me). (Jason Parks)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)I've read conflicting reports on Wil Myers about his soft numbers this year. Is it injury related or are there some effort questions around him? ETA second half of 2013?
(Austin Milbarge from Washington D.C.)
It's hard to say. The knee injury, and resulting infection certainly effected him, but he's never looked like the guy we saw last year. (Kevin Goldstein)
