YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Villar's 2012 report card is similar to 2011: young for his league, improved walk and strikeout rates, cut errors substantially, still showing all the tools that make him exciting. Not so exiting was the end of his season, as he deserved detention for punching a door and injuring his hand. Like Mier, he's no Derek Jeter in the batter's box, but he is expected to stay at shortstop and he can run like the wind. Villar has star potential even without hitting like an all-time great.
2012 Older than only Mike Trout among Texas League regulars in 2011, Villar made progress in three of the four areas where the Astros were hoping to see improvement: He cut his errors by 20 (that's the glass-half-full way of noting that he made 36 errors in 128 games at the expense of some range), he added walks, and he improved his power. That he's still striking out a lot makes him profile more like Jose Valentin than a top-flight shortstop, though his youth and tools make his upside sky high.
2011 One of three players acquired from the Phillies in the Roy Oswalt trade last July, Jonathan Villar is a good defensive shortstop and a bit of a hot dog, but his career will be short-circuited if he does not develop some plate discipline.

2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)Have a couple AL only guys to try and buy low on at this point?
(russellj90 from Iowa)
How about Trevor Bauer, Jonathan Villar and Craig Gentry? Not Mike Moustakas, unfortunately. Stay away. (Ben Carsley)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Mike- what are your thoughts on Villar ROS? Looking for steals and thinking about picking him up off waivers. Unfortunately I didn't this past weekend and I've watched him swipe 3 bases in 2 games thus far.
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
Hey Dan, thanks for joining the chat.

I like Jonathan Villar's steal potential, although in a mixed league I'd be a little wary. The BABIP is super high and the high K rate makes me think that pitchers are going to start throwing him more junk and that the BB rate is going to drop until he adjusts. Villar offers nothing but speed. In a deeper mixed or only you throw caution to the wind. In mixed, if the average drops any further - or if the BB disappear in an OBP league, he's suddenly a liability, even with the bags. (Mike Gianella)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better offense: Rougned Odor or Jonathan Villar?
(RotoLando from Cloud City)
Odor (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Jonathan Villar develop into a decent enough offensive MI at the MLB level?
(captnamerca from Clown College, Bro.)
Love your location. He has the talent to be an above-average regular at second base with some potential with the bat, speed, and good defensive tools. Call it a gut feeling, but I say he doesn't develop into an everyday guy. (Jason Cole)
2012-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Astros pushed Nolan Fontana fast and he's doing well in A-ball Lexington already. ETA to the Majors for him? Is he or Jonathan Villar the shortstop of the future at this point?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
For the next question, Ashitaka1110, I have seen both players, but not recently. Fontana has great bloodlines, as his grandfather is former Milwaukee Brave RHP Lew Burdette, which might help him get there a little sooner. Villar was a good get in the Pence deal, and the Astros will have a couple of talented kids to evaluate. (Dan Evans)
