2014-07-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it crazy to view Matt Adams as a legit power source in yrs to come, taking into account possibility of current "overperformance" and playing time concerns? Wondering how playing time might shake out in the taveras/Craig/Adams situation. Which two would you keep in a standard 5x5 dynasty league and which one would you shop?
(sneakyjay from Queens)
Like I said earlier, I'm not the right guy for fantasy-related questions. Taveras has the highest ceiling among that group, and it would be hard for me to go another direction. (Mark Anderson)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Taveras be better than Matt Adams? What is his problem now?
(Stella from St. Louis)
Yes, in every possible way. (Jeff Moore)
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jeff, I'm batting well over .300 and popping HR whenever I feel like it. Why would you think the Rook Oscar will be better than the might Matt? He hasn't impressed so far.
(Matt Adams from St. Louis)
Are we talking right now or long-term? Adams is clearly the better hitter right now, but it's not like Oscar Taveras doesn't have a track record of being the best hitter in the minor leagues or anything. Since when did Cardinals fans decide to turn on top prospects so quickly? I thought you were supposed to be the best fans in baseball? This is a very Cubs thing to do.

I like Matt Adams for what he is. He's a very good hitter, but he offers no defensive or base running value. He's also a big-bodied hitter, and we know those don't age well. The history is not kind for big hitters as they enter their 30's. Look at Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, etc. The list goes on and on. He's got plenty of time before that, but if we're looking at the long-term picture, it's not close between the 22-year-old outfielder with a 7 hit tool and a strong minor league track record and the slow-footed first baseman who is probably enjoying his career year and has maybe 3 years of his prime left in front of him.

Also, has anyone noticed that Matt Adams has 9 walks this season? 9!?! That's less than Adam Jones! If he isn't hitting .330 he's making a TON of outs. Regression is going to be rough in St. Louis. (Jeff Moore)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Dan Vogelbach. Matt Adams 2.0? Thoughts on Big Dan?
(Bob from Dallas)
I'm not sure where Dan is going to play on the diamond, or if he can play a defensive role on the diamond, but the dude can mash. Guys with his power will get every chance to find a defensive home. (J.P. Breen)
2014-06-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)If they could, should St. Louis trade Shelby Miller, Matt Adams and Carlos Martinez for Paul Goldschmidt? (Goldy's just 26 and only makes a bit over $40M for the next 5 years. At 5 WAR per year he'd generate $100M in surplus value.) Thanks for chatting, Matthew!
(Mo Zeliak from Slightly Hot Seat)
It's always fun to chat. I appreciate that you guys take time out of your busy days to talk baseball with me. I really do. Many thanks for that.

As for that deal, wow, that's a lot of talent to give up. I'll put it this way: if I were the Diamondbacks, I'd make that deal two times.

And now, sadly, it's time for me to go. I have a podcast to do and an article to write and a sunny day to enjoy. I will be in Seattle this weekend with Jason Parks, Joe Hamrahi, Geoff Young, and Harry Pavlidis and I hope to see you there! Should be a blast.

Have a great week everyone and thanks for spending some time here at BP! (Matthew Kory)
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)Just traded Goldy for CarGo, MadBum, and Matt Adams in a 10-team re-draft. Did I get enough in return?
(Cookie from N.O.)
God yes. I'd rather have CarGo and MadBum than Goldy, and Adams is a nice throw-in. Well done. (Ben Carsley)
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Adams or Jonathan Lucroy for this year and the next 3 years?
(Ryan from Boston)
Lucroy. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)15 team deep keeper league - 6x6 add obp and ip. Need to choose last keeper: Jansen (4 - can hold at 6,9 for 3 years); Fister 9 (last year); Matt Adams 8 - then 12 and 18)or Cuddyer (1B eligible at 11). What say you?
(Lenny Randle from Queens, NY)
Hi Lenny, I miss you AND Shea Stadium.

I normally wouldn't recommend keeping a closer, but at those prices (and with the # of years you can hold onto Jansen, I'd keep Jansen. Adams has the highest ceiling if he can figure out lefties, but I don't like the log jam in STL at 1B/OF. Roll with Jansen. (Mike Gianella)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)I had asked Ben this same question - goldschmidt $32 or Matt Adams $10 - $250 auction league - 5 keeps (Harper, Bogaerts, Castellanos, Kershaw are my other 4)
(Mike from Chi-town)
I think there's a good chance that Goldschmidt produces more than $35 of value. It's tall timber but I'd keep him over Adams. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Ben,jumping two yeas from now,can you rank this group????Tanaka,Jon Gray,Danny Salazer,Patrick Corbin,D.J.Peterson,Alex Cobb,Matt Adams and Odor.. Thanks....
(John from Boston)
ALL of the ranking questions. In two years, let's go Gray, Tanaka, Salazar, Cobb, Corbin, Adams, Odor, Peterson (Ben Carsley)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I can keep one of the following three first basemen (10 team h2h 5x5). Where is the value? Matt Adams at the cost of a 12th round pick? Freddie Freeman at the cost of 7th? Mike Napoli at the cost of a 12th?
(Andrew from Canada)
Freeman at the cost of a 7th rounder is very good value in my mind. I would go there. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Been offered the #1 pick in our dynasty draft (I'd take Kris Bryant) for Matt Adams and Dylan Bundy. Would I be giving too much? I have 3 other 1b, including Goldschmidt.
(SJLedet from Alex, La)
If you've got the pitching to be able to afford to trade Bundy, then go for it. I don't see Adams as a huge fantasy asset. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Goldy at $32, or Matt Adams at $15 in a $250 keeper league?
(Al from Indy)
Paul Goldschmidt. He's still potentially a bargain at that price and even if Goldy and Adams are both undervalued by $5 or so in a keeper you want to go with the better player. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on playing time and production from Matt Adams in 2014?
(Andrew from SF)
I'm a fan. I think he gets substantial playing time, though less than a full season's worth. I'd hazard a guess at 500 plate-appearances. I'd expect his production to be similar to 2013 on a rate basis. Perhaps downgrade a little as the league adjusts. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances that Matt Adams gets the 1b job full time in STL with Craig moving to the OF?
(Chad from OKC)
Hi Chad:

At the moment, this seems likely. I have Adams penciled in for 1B with Allen Craig moving to the outfield. It's not a perfect scenario defensively, but I can't see St. Louis moving either player to the bench. (Mike Gianella)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Just took over an abysmal squad in a 16-team, 7x7 format with 25 man rosters. I have stripped it down and the top of my depth chart around the infield reads Matt Adams, Kolten Wong, Xander Bogaerts, and Lonnie Chisenhall. I'm not extremely confident, as of today, that anyone besides Bogaerts will get everyday reps in 2014. So the question becomes at what position(s) I should grab filler for this season. Who would you confidently run out there as starters? I'm considering one option of allowing Bogaerts to man third and pick up a Jed Lowrie/Brad Miller type to fill the gap up the middle. Any thoughts or insight as to how would you approach it?
(AnthopoJays from Houston TX)
It all depends on your waiver wire. I'd try to grab a 2B and a 3B and leave Bogaerts at short, but if Brad Miller (who I like) is the best option, by all means slide him over. I'd confidently play Adams and Bogaerts as starters in a 16-team league (and potentially Wong as well if Freese is traded) (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Matt Adams be the everyday 1B for the cards? His power is exciting. Will they give him a shot to show what he can do? He's too good to be a utility player
(higgsboson from Guelph)
I think he can play everyday. He's not going to be a star but there's enough feel to hit and plenty of power for him to work on an everyday basis. There's really no utility option for him...he either hits enough to play every day or he ends up an up-and-down guy that helps when injuries strike. (Mark Anderson)
2013-11-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)At 1B next year, who puts up better numbers Matt Adams or Yonder Alonso?
(higgsboson from Guelph)
Gimme Adams. Power has always been Alonso's issue (well that and platoon splits), and I am not too confident that the power is going to develop. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)How big of a disadvantage will the Red Sox be when playing in St.Louis. At least having Napoli or Ortiz on the bench helps in late innings (right?)
(MrNegative1 from Tampa)
They are disadvantaged, no doubt. Although, as you mentioned, they'll have a good pinch-hitter available off the bench either way. The weird thing is the Cardinals will be hurt by not having a DH, too, since they'll need to sit Matt Adams or Allen Craig. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)I am in a dynasty league, would you trade Matt Adams for Craig Kimbrel? (already have Freeman at 1st)
(Justin from Saint Louis)
I don't pay for saves. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)One more NL Central question. With Matt Adams coming into his own, and Oscar Taveras still lurking in the minors, does St. Louis try to re-up Carlos Beltran? Or do they risk letting the oft-injured Allen Craig move to right as a regular? I know, what a tough problem to have ...
(Bill from New Mexico)
Terrible, right? I would guess Beltran. I don't really like the idea of putting Craig out there, though I guess it's an opportunity to get Craig and Adams in the lineup at the same time if both stay healthy. I still lean Beltran and I think at this age and with his history and decline in offensive production, a one-year deal at maybe a Berkman-like number might do it.

The big question is what cap Beltran wears in the Hall of Fame if he goes. (Zachary Levine)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)I feel as though Matt Adams should have a full-time 1B job (or at least full-time DH duty). With The Wrench entrenched at StL's cold corner, and the OF corners manned by Holliday and Beltran (and soon to be Taveras), that doesn't seem likely on his current club. I assume Adams is dealt, but where?
(Donald Loria from Miami)
I have no idea, but the depth that St. Louis has is amazing. Adams, Wong, and Taveras are all MLB level players, and they can't get regular playing time. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-06-27 13:15:00 (link to chat)So the Cardinals have an awesome problem. What are they going to do in 2014 with Oscar Taveras, Kolten Wong, and Matt Adams when Jon Jay, Matt Carpenter, and Allen Craig already in their respective positions?
(Brady Childs from Boulder)
I wish we all had the Cardinals' problems. Carlos Beltran will be a free agent, and Craig can play a lot of positions, so finding time for Taveras, Adams, and Craig seems doable. Carpenter's emergence makes Wong a valuable trade chip. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)12 team mixed keeper league. Is it worth holding onto Hosmer? He's my only 1B and is KILLING me. Yonder Alonso, Matt Adams, James Loney, and Mitch Moreland are the only decent names on waivers? Would you take any of them over Hosmer or try to make a trade for someone better?
(kcasey1029 from Denver)
I'd prefer a trade since 1B is an elite offensive position, but in the meantime scoop Alonso to get some 1B production going. Hang onto Hosmer (unless he's part of the trade), but go and sit him for a bit. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who's a decent bet at 1b/3b for power and avg? I like cj cron at 1b but he's blocked 6 ways from Sunday and like joey gallo but contact seems to be an issue. Help a brother out lol
(jquinton82 from ny)
Depends on who's available in your league. Vogelbach? Matt Adams? If you need a deep sleeper how about Matt Olson? (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Adams...this guy was a beast in the minors, but never got much attention because of his size. Can he be the next Trumbo? Butler?
(Nate from Jersey)
If everything breaks right and he's given the opportunity, sure. But he's more likely to be Butler than Trumbo -- he can hit for average. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Can we expect the Cardinals to make room for Matt Adams as a starter this year? Next year? He has raked throughout his minor league career.
(Big T from McCracken)
I don't see how they do that either this year or next year. Think he ends up as trade bait if they need an upgrade at SS as the season goes on. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)How can the Cards get Matt Adams's bat into the lineup consistently? Rotate Craig into RF/LF/bench?
(Orange Face from Tanning Salon)
Brian Giles, is that you? Maybe they rotate Craig at some point, but after what he did in 2012, it's hard to justify that move right now. Trying to find at-bats for Adams is a nice problem to have. (Geoff Young)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Was Matt Adams close to breaking into your top 101 ? thanks.
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
Not really. I like the bat, but he has to hit a ton at the ML level to have value. Not sure he's a top 101 guy. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Matt Adams. Seems a bit buried in St. Louis. Could be a an average or above 1B productivity wise were he given a starting gig in the majors?
(Marcus from Joliet)
Dude sure can hit. He struggled a bit in the big leagues and that may have hampered his ability to get another true shot in 2013. He deserves a chance to win a job in the big leagues because I think the bat will ultimately play at the level. (Mark Anderson)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cardinals still need a shortstop and have tons of young starting pitching. Rangers still need starting pitching and have an abundance of young shortstops. Shelby Miller, Matt Adams & Tyrell Jenkins for Jurickson Profar. Why wouldn't John Mozeliak and Jon Daniels be talking?
(Don from Missouri)
Hi Don, thanks for the question. My personal opinion is that it's impossible to "have an abundance of shortstops," but such a trade would be fun. I'm not even sure how I'd evaluate it other than to note that I'd hate to give up Profar. Then again, Mozeliak probably feels the same way about his guys. Hmmm... now I totally want this to happen. (Geoff Young)
2012-12-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you attach any credence to the rumor that the Indians are asking an arm and a leg (specifically, Lance Lynn's and Joe Kelly's arms, and Matt Adams' gynormous legs along with the rest of him) of St. Louis for Asdrubal Cabrera? That would be an Adams-sized overpay, wouldn't it?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Nice one, Bill — and the asking price for Cabrera at this point does seem exorbitant. Paul Hoynes from the Cleveland Plain-Dealer characterized it as "three to four players," at least two of whom are likely to be top prospects. Cabrera is a reliable, two-win player signed for $16.5 million through 2014, so it's understandable that Chris Antonetti doesn't want to give him away. But given his iffy defense at shortstop, and the other options at 2B and 3B, unless teams get desperate (and I don't think the Cardinals are), that demand is unlikely to be met. (Daniel Rathman)

2012-11-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)There seems to be a lack of upcoming 1B superstars. If I have a dynasty league team that's looking at 2016 to breakout, who would be a good 1B to target? I can only think of Rizzo, Goldschmidt, Hosmer and maybe Singleton?
(Tong Po from VanDammistan)
Those are going to be some of your best bets. You could definitely see some players who fail at other positions move over to first. Miguel Sano might be a good one of those to consider. Could also think about Matt Adams in St. Louis, who's already playing first. (Derek Carty)
2012-08-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Matt Adams ever make it as a big-league first baseman?
(Bill from New Mexico)
I think so. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is July 1 a solid ETA for d'Arnaud? Hes on fire.
(Warren from Buffalo)
Where you putting him? I say this all of the time, and it needs to be said again. Players don't have timetables like this and nobody knows when a guy is coming up. Even the best prospects usually get their chance because of the failures or injuries of others. Look at Trout or Harper or Matt Adams yesterday. They're up because of big league situations more than their own play. When will Player X be up is just not a reasonable question to answer. I understand and appreciate the excitement that prospects create, but deep breaths. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-06-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Crap, meant to add this to my question, rather have Arenado or Matt Adams as a keeper?
(kddean from Loop)
For positional purposes, I'd probably go with Arenado. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do we see Matt Adams up this year? Is he the everyday 1st baseman next year?
(Mark from Omaha)
I'm convinced he'll hit enough to warrant a promotion, but as long as Berkman is healthy(ish), Adams is better off getting regular at-bats in Memphis. Historically, at least during the TLR regime, St. Louis has been willing to let youngsters earn starting jobs, even unheralded guys like Freese, Greene, and Jay. If he hits, I think Adams will play. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Matt Adams have a shot at becoming Cards' 1B? If so, how does he perform?
(Cards fan in SF from in SF)
Yes; his bat is legit. His body is very big, but it doesn't prevent his bat from working very well. Could be the full-time guy at the position by 2013. (Jason Parks)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Matt Adams comp favorably to Prince Fielder (bat, power, body)?
(Donovan from St. Pete's)
No. He has a good bat with some pop. He doesn't have Fielder power; he isn't going to hit 50 bombs at the major league level. He's just a guy with some power who might hit enough to be a major league regular. Fielder is one of the best power bats in baseball. (Jason Parks)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)With no real defensive value and questions about his plate discipline, what makes you bullish on Matt Adams?
(Peter7899 from Coeur d'Alene)
Plus-plus power and excellent contact ability for a player with plus-plus power. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Think Matt Adams will make the Cards opening day roster?
(Corey from Topeka, KS)
There's no position for him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Matt Adams skill set, both at the plate and in the field, will be sufficient to be a big-league regular?
(Jerry from St. Louis)
I do. Guys with power and his kind of contact rate tend to succeed. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Mat Gamel or Matt Adams?
(Mario66 from Milwaukee)
Adams. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt Adams - do you believe he can stick as the STL 1B of the future?
(Xavier from Texas)
I think he can become a second-division type, but I don't think he's a player that you pencil in your lineup for the next ten years and forget about it. (Jason Parks)
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)So, Matt Adams is going to be playing some OF this year. One of the best, or the best positional changes in the minors for the upcoming season in terms of "must-watchness?"
(Jake from New Trier)
I'd like to see Matt Adams track a ball in the outfield. That should be entertaining (Jason Parks)
