| 2011-05-26 13:00:00 | I am trippin out right now about the Buster Posey situation. Are the Giants in serious trouble? Should Buster be converted to another position? He was a shortstop as a freshman at FSU I believe. Why limit him to first base where Aubrey Huff is holding it down. I think because Buster is more athletic than the prototypical cathcer he just goes to hard behind the plate. (Aceball from Reno) | Posey is more athletic than a lot of catchers and yes he did play some shortstop for the Seminoles--he also appeared at every other position during one game. Should they move him away from catching? That's hard for me to say. They knew the risks associated with catching--not just the play at the plate aspect either--and figured he was best served there, so should an incident like this change their outlook? I don't know. Maybe. (R.J. Anderson) |
| 2011-05-26 13:00:00 | With Buster Posey being out for the year, is there a sleeper at catcher that is worth getting? Also, gerrout. (Toppah from Some reference that no one gets) | Depends on who is available in your league, but if you aren't opposed to trying to ride a hot hand, perhaps grab Saltalamacchia and see if his last few weeks are legitimate. He has an OPS near 900 in May. (R.J. Anderson) |
| 2011-05-26 13:00:00 | Yes, Buster Posey has been taking hard foul balls off the mask as well. They should put Sandoval behind the plate when he gets back. He came up as a catcher. Is that possible, to go back to catching on the fly? (Aceball from Reno) | If they felt comfortable with Sandoval behind the plate, I can't imagine they would have moved him away from catching to begin with. (R.J. Anderson) |
| 2010-09-13 13:00:00 | Who is your NL ROY? (Greg27 from Atlanta) | Buster Posey. Heyward's injuries have held him back, and Posey's arrival turned the Giants into a legitimate contender in addition to his stellar play. The Giants are 15 wins above .500 when he's in the lineup, and 18 above .500 overall. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-08-04 13:00:00 | Does Buster Posey have a shot at NL ROY? He hasn't played as much as Garcia, but he's having a fantastic season at the plate, and pretty solid for a rook behind it. (Gregjitsu from California) | Yes, I would think he does if he keeps it up. By the end of the year, the truncated playing time won't be as obvious. Man, if the Giants had just started the year with him instead of procrastinating over arb eligibility or whatever, they might be looking down at the Padres instead of up. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-05-24 14:00:00 | Christina, with the A's sweep of the Giants, where does this leave both teams? Certainly, the Giants pitched well enough to win two of the three, but obviously, when you can only muster a single run over three games, it makes their laughable offense seem all the more hilarious. (TLivingston from Tampa Bay) | The problem with the Giants is Brian Sabean's ongoing disconnect between the quality of the performances and the reputation of the performers. He's signed all these former All-Stars! Runs will ensue! Surely they must! That's a lot of money, so surely they surely must, surely! Ooops. I wonder if there isn't something in the water. Aubrey Huff offering to play left so that Buster Posey can play... first base? It's like having how an offense scores runs explained by creationists. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-05-25 13:00:00 | Which of the following prospects will "miraculously" be deemed ready for the majors in a week or so: Carlos Santana, Pedro Alvarez, Stephen Strasburg, Buster Posey, Desmond Jennings? (tommybones from brooklyn) | Stephen Strasburg, for sure. (John Perrotto) |
| 2010-04-16 13:00:00 | Who hangs up first?
Ianetta for Bowden & Lars Anderson? Ethier for Ellsbury, Bowden & Lars? Posey for Ellsbury? Mejia & FMart for Bowden & Lars? thanks for answering (mo from las vegas) | I think Brian Sabean gives you the quick hang-up on that one. He ain't trading Buster Posey. (Bradford Doolittle) |
| 2010-03-18 14:00:00 | What the heck are the Giants doing with Buster Posey?! Any idea what the plan is? Do they even have one? (tommybones from brooklyn) | I have no idea in the world why they would consider playing him at different positions. He has a chance to be a perenial All-Star catcher. If they feel he needs more time at Class AAA, that' sfine. If they think he should switch positions, that's poor thinking. (John Perrotto) |
| 2010-03-17 14:00:00 | Do you think Houston's Ed Wade is slowly crafting together another championship team in Houston like he did in Philly? I see he drafted his catcher and shortstop of the future in Castro and Meier. It's like when he was in Philly and Rolen and Rollins were drafted. Then Mr. Wade added parts over the years until he reached the top. Thoughts? (Rube from Philly) | It was briefly fashionable in sabermetric circles to deride the acquisition of Michael Bourn, but I don't mind at all the suggestion that Wade's accumulating up-the-middle talent, and nobody's laughing quite so hard now that Bourn seems to have come into his own. The question is, having bought himself time and credibility by giving it a go with what he inherited (to little point, predictably, but he tried), will the talent he's adding arrive in time to help the core he inherited? The answer to that should be a clear 'no,' not with Roy Oswalt talking about two more years, Lance Berkman showing signs of wear, and Carlos Lee heading into his age-34 season. Instead, the challenge is going to be whether Castro and Mier are the centerpieces of the next good Astros team... which good as they might be as prospects, isn't the same as saying they've got Tulo and Buster Posey. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-02-17 16:00:00 | What prospect are you aiming to take in your fantasy drafts this year? (MarinerDan from SF) | For non-keeper leagues, I like Neftali Feliz, Jason Heyward, Buster Posey, Wade Davis, and Brian Matusz. Almost all of those guys will get good playing time. One deep sleeper I like okay is Mark Hamilton of the Cardinals. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-02-26 13:00:00 | Do you think Jason Heyward will have a full time big league job by July? (Steve from NJ) | Will? Not sure. Should? If he is as good as the reports say he is, yes. I'm of the opinion that elite prospects shouldn't be held back as long as many are. Buster Posey comes to mind as I type. Maybe even that right-hander in DC. (David Laurila) |
| 2010-02-26 13:00:00 | What do you think Pedro Alvarez ceiling is? (Will from WV) | Kevin Goldstein has him rated ahead of Desmond Jennings, Carlos Santana and Buster Posey. I think that is as good of an answer as is needed. (David Laurila) |
| 2010-02-05 13:00:00 | I loathe the Molina signing. Is Buster Posey the everyday catcher in San Fran by the all-star break? (Greg27 from San Fran) | I try not to get into the head of Brian Sabean, but I should hope that this is the case. They handled the Molina thing well, all things considered. I'm not sure what else Posey needs to do in order to get himself the gig... (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-19 15:30:00 | Bengie Molina re-signs with the Giants for 1 year. This seems like a disaster all around. Who's a worse GM, Sabean or Minaya? (Rob from Alaska) | I think the Mets got saved from their own stupidity. Any time a team spends half its offseason chasing a guy with a .300 OBP, you really have to ask what the heck they're thinking. As for the Giants, they get a familiar face who is lame but allows them not to force Buster Posey's schedule. That's the best face I can put on the Giants' end of it, anyway. We ask some hard questions about Sabean in the Giants chapter of the annual. I'd rather have Sabean rather than Minaya, not because I think he has any great insights, but because I think Minaya not only lacks them, he's shown an astounding lack of character, particularly during the Tony Bernazard imbroglio. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-01-26 14:00:00 | Who will be the top 5 NL players who will make their major league debut in 2010? (chaneyhey from stlouis) | Hmm, that's a toughie because it involves two variables that discount a player's expected value: likelihood of getting to the majors and expected production. We'll go with Heyward, Austin Jackson, Buster Posey, Jason Castro, and Madison Bumgarner. But that's basically an educated guess. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2009-11-24 13:00:00 | Assuming the Giants could even absorb the extra payroll, would Posey & Bumgarner be too much to give up for Cabrera? (Rob from Oakland) | Yes, especially given the cost, the surrendering of a top-tier catching prospect, and Cabrera's track record of, well, staying out of shape. It would seem to be more in their wheelhouse to revisit those Cain-Fielder discussions and see what comes from that. Given Posey's potential, the question becomes, would you rather have Bengie Molina and Miguel Cabrera or Buster Posey and either Nick Johnson or Russell Branyan? I'd spring for the latter. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-11-19 13:00:00 | Who would say no to Carl Crawford for Buster Posey straight up? (brian from Brooklyn NY) | The Giants. One year versus six. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-13 14:00:00 | Best chat session ever, thanks Christina! If you are the Giants what are you looking to do this off-season? Also, presuming Molina's gone, where do you slot in Buster Posey into the offense? (Parker from San Fran) | Fiddle, there's nary a mention of Ataturk or the invention of the stirrup's role at the Battle of Hastings, let alone any talk about the redemptive value of heavy metal. Now that'd be something, but I'll settle for baseball. ;)
They really should be in the market for a bat, because Ryan Garko's just a placeholder at first base--assuming they tender him. Perhaps they get in on Adrian Beltre or Chone Figgins, and move Sandoval to first; Figgins might be game for a move back to second, though, which would beat placing faith in Eugenio Velez. Posey and no more screwing around with not just leaving Fred Lewis be gives them enough runs and an improved defense. Spending high on the first basemen on the market isn't very attractive (Adam LaRoche) or comes with risk (Nick Johnson), so I guess I'd rather find ways to get Sandoval off of third base. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-10-09 13:30:00 | Any thoughts on the fact that almost every highly touted catching prospect from the last few years has been a disappointment? The Texas trio, to Clement, Towles, Anderson, Walker, etc.
Is there anything to learn from this, except maybe that catching is ridiculously difficult, and that there's a multi-year learning curve in the majors, regardless of minor league prowess? (fjm(anuel) from ny) | Buster Posey says hi. Seriously, though. It's like that with most up the middle positions, even more so for catching -- it's really is both a unique, and incredibly difficult position. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-10-08 14:00:00 | Roto question (sorry): keeper league, just dealt Rasmus/Andy LaRoche/Carlos Ruiz for Buster Posey/Gallado/Looper. Thoughts? (Silv from NY, NY) | Stop playing with the local Girl Scout Troop. Ruiz and Looper cancel, and you're way ahead on the rest of it.
Don't ask me three questions at once. Thanks. (Not you, Silv.) (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-09-24 14:00:00 | Free Buster Posey! Viva la revolucion! (Beau from San Francisco) | No, he likes living in Vermont. It's not a prison sentence. He's from...
Oh, wait. My mistake. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-09-24 14:00:00 | Do you think Buster Posey will be the Giants opening day catcher next season? If so do you think he and the Panda could be Morneau/Maur lite? (brianpekrul from San Francisco) | That's not a bad upside comp, although it may be a little underselling just what Joe Mauer is, how far above Posey he is. If Posey isn't the Giants' catcher next year, starting 120 times, it's a pretty big mistake. Bring back Bengie Molina if you have to, but in Jose's role. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-09-02 13:00:00 | Buster Posey was just called up. What, if any impact, does he play on the Wild Card race? Is it too much to expect him to be an improvement over a banged up Molina? (Brandon from SF) | I can certainly seeing him have an impact if he posts an EqA above, say, .270. The Giants are just an awful offensive team to the point that 2009 Geovany Soto might actually improve them, let alone a top-tier prospect everyone raves about. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2009-08-21 14:00:00 | Hi KG ... thanks for the chat ...
Buster Posey will begin 2010 playing (position) in (city). (dianagramr from NYC) | C, SF. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-06-24 13:00:00 | How good will The giants be in 2012 Thanks Steve
(Trevor from San fran) | All I can think of is references to an early Rush album, and not my favorite. Do I even have a favorite Rush album? Would I admit to it if I did? I guess I can admit to "Moving Pictures," with honorable mentions to "Permanent Waves" and "Signals," and a friendly wave to the first side of "Power Windows." There's no accounting for taste. Anyway, 2012 is a long way off, and the Giants could be good enough to make the postseason right now with a few tweaks. They presently lead the NL wild card race, but will probably require another bat to hold the spot. I don't know if they have the trading chips to get that bat... It seems like we talk about every team needing to pry Adam Dunn away from the Nats, but were the Giants to get him and stick him at first base or left field, we'd probably see them in October. What happens three years from now is hard to forecast given just how few of the current Jints are going to be important parts of that team - Sandoval, Lincecum, maybe Cain (his contract is up after 2011), and I guess we can assume Buster Posey will be there. I'm not sure about anyone else. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-05-21 14:00:00 | Is Stephen Strasburg the #1 prospect for 2010? (Jim from D.C.) | Yes. I'm not Kevin, but I figure Jason Heyward, Neftali Feliz, Buster Posey and Justin Smoak are all in the mix. I'm almost certainly forgetting someone. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-05-04 14:00:00 | Looking ahead to 2010, who are the prospects to watch? (assume strasberg is coming up this year) (joyrider2001 from NYC) | Justin Smoak, Desmond Jennings, Adrian Cardenas, Brian Matusz, Buster Posey. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-04-08 15:00:00 | Is Tony Sanchez this year's Buster Posey? (Sully Superfan from The Cape) | The Boston College catcher is generating buzz, but no, he's not in Posey's league. (Kevin Goldstein) |

| 2010-04-05 09:30:00 | Season Opener Roundtable | Jquinton82 (NY): Heres a few topics: 1) Madison Bumgarner's missing velocity 2) First top 25 prospect to get called up, who & when? 3) The next Jimmy Rollins is...? 4) Word association - Yogi Berra ...discuss amongst yourselves 1) Either he's hurt, or he left it in his other pants. Like lost car keys, missing velocity is always in the last place you look. 2) Well, with Jason Heyward, Neftali Feliz, Brian Matusz and Alcides Escobar breaking camp, this doesn't seem like that big a deal, but I'll go with Buster Posey, May 9, after Bengie Molina sprains some fat. 3) ...taller than Rollins and hopefully blessed with a better OBP. 4) Provider of great book titles by cool people, including our own It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over and friend Emma Span's 90% of The Game Is Half Mental, which is one of this spring's funniest baseball books. Speaking of Yogi, I read a quote the other day that was attributed to him: "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is." Alas, that quote has also been attributed to one Johannes "Jan" L. A. van de Snepscheut, a Dutch computer scientist who taught at Caltech before bludgeoning his wife to death with an axe in 1994.
