BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Eppley, whom the Yankees plucked off waivers from the Rangers on Opening Day, was the right-handed half of the team’s league of extraordinary side-arming specialists. He faced 3.3 batters per outing, the fewest of any right-handed AL reliever with at least 30 total innings, and like lefty counterpart Clay Rapada, dominated same-handed hitters but got his comeuppance against opposite-siders. Also like Rapada, Eppley throws a sinker that gets grounders approximately 70 percent of the time it’s put in play, but Eppley throws his about twice as often—on roughly four out of every five pitches. That means fewer strikeouts, but the highest groundball rate of any AL reliever not named Jim Johnson.
2012 At the major league level, deception specialists like Cody Eppley have a small margin of error and a short shelf-life in general, so maximizing their window of opportunity is paramount. Drafted in the 43rd round of the 2008 draft, this side-arming reliever already defied all the odds to reach the bigs in 2011, and he will have to continue to defy those odds in order to find sustainable success at that level in 2012. With long arms, a highly deceptive release, and a good feel for command, Eppley can function as a right-righty specialist, using his upper-80s fastball and sweeping slider to tie-up hitters and coerce weak contact.
2011 The 1,293rd overall pick in the 2008 draft, side-arming righty Cody Eppley made stops at three levels in 2010 and positioned himself as a situational righty in the mold of Darren O'Day.

2011-04-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Neftali Feliz hurt and the Rangers' bullpen in supposed shambles, would it be a good time to take a flier on Cody Eppley?
(jhardman from Apex - The Peak of Good Living)
I get the sense Texas will deal with Arthur Rhodes in the role in the short-term, but keeping an eye on Eppley is probably in your best interests in AL-only leagues. (Marc Normandin)
