YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Owens doesn't throw hard at his best, but last year he reclaimed most of the velocity he'd lost in 2011, and his mechanics also recovered, and with them his sub-2.0 walks-per-nine-innings ratio. That rebound corroborates the story told before he was included in the Wandy Rodriguez trade, that 2011 was the result of pitching in pain. However, in Oklahoma City, everything went bad again. The current story is that the downturn was just shell shock from the better hitting environment. Houston is hoping for a strong showing in spring training and that Owens will need only a short Triple-A refresher before being ready to be yet another back-of-the-rotation starter for the big club.
2012 Owens is an undercover strikethrower, and not much has changed in his relationship with prospect hounds over the last few years. They used to ignore him over his performance. Now they ignore him because the Pirates have sexier entrees and his stuff does not hold up in comparison. For many, that limits his upside to a back-of-the-rotation starter. Owens did little to erase that projection by struggling in his first try at Triple-A, then being shut down with shoulder soreness. If Owens can pitch as he did when he won back-to-back organizational Pitcher of the Year awards in 2009 and 2010, he could make his major-league debut in 2012.
2011 Owens has gone from an obscure 28th-round draft pick who was seemingly headed toward his release from short-season ball in 2008 to the organization's minor-league pitcher of the year for two seasons running. His turnaround came when he began taking the advice of his coaches to pitch off his fastball, which is usually in the 90-92 range but he commands with the precision of a surgeon, instead of his curveball, which can be erratic. The lefty has also honed his changeup to the point that it now qualifies as a plus pitch. The word throwback can be overused in sports, but it's fitting when applied to Owens, who has been known to have his hair permed, eliciting memories of such big-haired pitchers of the 1970s as Randy Jones, Mark Fidrych, and Ross Grimsley. He will start this season at Triple-A but could reach the big leagues sometime in the second half.
2010 Rudy Owens came out of nowhere to win the Pirates' minor-league pitcher of the year award, along with the Sally League's most outstanding pitcher prize.
