YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Itís rare that a 22-year-old with less than a full season in the majors could be thought of as a team leader, but thatís exactly how the Royals view Perez. Pitchers love the game-calling skills of this stalwart defensive catcher, while runners fear his lethal arm. A torn meniscus in spring training sidelined him until the All-Star break, but he still managed to lead the majors in runners picked off. He also threw out 42 percent of all would-be thieves, tops among catchers with at least 1,000 stolen-base opportunities against. For the second consecutive season he has also shown surprising ability with the bat. Another in a long line of free-swinging Royals hitters, he seldom misses his pitch and flashes progressive power. The Royals are fortunate to have one of the best young catchers in the game signed to an extremely club-friendly extension with options through 2019.
2012 Perez entered the 2011 season as one of the top defensive catching prospects in the game. He only enhanced that reputation in his major league debut when he picked a runner off first, another off third, and very nearly gunned down another off second. By the end of the season, he had caught base-stealers only 21 percent of the time. The low success rate is more a product of him learning the Royals pitching staff and their inability to keep runners close than his throwing ability. His catch and release mechanics, footwork, and arm strength are outstanding: his caught stealing rate will only increase. While his defensive reputation rightly preceded him, there were questions about how his bat would hold up at the big league level. Perez answered that emphatically with an 89 percent contact rate and gap to gap power. The Royals have struggled to fill the backstop position for years, employing the likes of Brent Mayne, Jason Kendall, and Miguel Olivo. That problem has been solved.
2011 One of the better sleepers in the system, catcher Salvador Perez is a defensive stalwart who started to show some signs of life with the bat in 2010.

2014-10-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)The Royals come to you and say "bruh, this walk-up music we're using sucks. You like music, don't you? Choose the walk-up music for this whole lineup..." Nine players, nine songs. GO!
(Bruh from Club)
I did this in a mailbag bag in August. Forgive the jumbled up lineup:

1. Nori Aoki: "The Downfall of Us All" by A Day To Remember. This would just be an amusing way to start the first inning.

2. Omar Infante: "Mojo So Dope" by Kid Cudi. Omar is a laid-back fellow.

3. Salvador Perez: "Simon Says" by Pharoah Monche. The Godzilla introduction would be excellent.

4. Billy Butler: "Some Guys Have All The Luck" by Rod Stewart. A classic for the perpetually put-upon DH.

5. Alex Gordon: "Put On" by Young Jeezy. Either this, or "My Hero" by Foo Fighters. Or "The Best" by Tina Turner. I doubt Gordon would like the latter choices.

6. Josh Willingham: "Top Notch" by Manchester Orchestra. Non-descript rock music.

7. Lorenzo Cain: "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake. Smoother than LoCain flagging down a line drive in center.

8. Mike Moustakas: "You Wanted More" by Tonic. What? It's a good guitar riff.

9. Alcides Escobar: "Bowtie" by Outkast. I don't know. Feels like it fits. (Andy McCullough)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any reason Francisco Pena wouldn't be the Royals back-up catcher this year?
(hotstatrat from another world)
Brett Hayes exists? Not sure it matters much. Salvador Perez is going to catch a LOT of games. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Salvador Perez finish in the Top 5 at C this season? His second half was strong. An uptick in power seems inevitable going forward.
(Tim Bennett from Dunn Field)
I don't think so. I'm not sure more power is guaranteed and Joe Mauer still rates as a catcher for this season. I have Perez behind Posey, Molina, Mauer, Santana and McCann at least. Possibly Lucroy and a couple others. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Z, thanks for the chat. From what players are you expecting nice breakouts in 2013?
(Jon KK from Elkhart, IN)
I picked Salvador Perez in our Lineup Card on breakout players, but this list should give you a pretty good idea of some of the candidates.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=19600

I also like Matt Harvey very much unless you count last year as a breakout or think top prospects can't "break out." (Zachary Levine)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of numbers can we expect from Salvador Perez this season? How about at his peak?
(Tony from Lunch)
He just keeps showing us more, huh? First it was the AVG then the HR last year. 14 HR - .290 AVG this year. Looks like he can be a 20+/.310 rake at his peak, but at 23 that may be some time away. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your take on Salvador Perez and why did seemingly the entire scouting community miss on him?
(Username from Location)
People missed on him; no doubt. But some hit on him, like BP's own Joe Hamrahi, who scouted him at the complex level after he signed. I'm a big fan of the player, and I hope he can stay healthy because he could be a very important player for the Royals in their pursuit of major league success. (Jason Parks)
2013-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mr.Levine,can you put thes guys in order??Jose Fernandez...Salvador Perez...Albert Almora..Jorge Solar...Kyle Zimmer...Noah Syndergaaud...Allen Webster...Alen Hanson...Gregory Palanco..Aaron Sanchez...Andrew Heaney...Kevin Gausman..Addison Russell....Kyle Crick...Sean Manaea...Clint Frazier...Ryne Stanek... Thanks John
(John from Boston)
I sort of feel like this is a riddle to see if I can figure out what this list even is. What is this list? I'll go with Salvador (Sal(vy)) Perez and then the rest just for the present. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Dan,can you put these guys in order.....Jose Fernandez,Albert Almora,Solar,Zimmer,Syndergaard,Hedges,Andrew Heaney,Salvador Perez,Allen Webster,Aaron Sanchez and Dan Straily....thanks
(John from Boston)
Hey, John.

Sheesh, that's a lot of names. From a fantasy standpoint, and based on what I've read, I'd probably want to own Fernandez and Sanchez. I'm probably not qualified to put the others in order, so I'd suggest asking a member of our prospect team. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Ryan Howard has the worst contract in baseball, does that mean Salvador Perez may end up as the best contract in baseball?
(igoinsane67 from my office)
Maybe! That's an excellent contract. Ask Sam Miller about it sometime. Sometimes he stops people on the street to tell them how much money Sal Perez is making. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Fantasy purposes, who do you prefer for next year, Hosmer or Salvador Perez? Pedroia or J. Bruce? Thanks.
(stewbies from Rochester, NY)
Perez, Pedroia (Sam Miller)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)plus hitter with plus defense behind the plate...Salvador Perez potentially?
(lewish from WA)
Yes. Perez is awesome. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)More on Salvador Perez...I remember you saying a couple of chats ago that every time you see him he shows you something you didn't think he could do. Why do you think that absolutely nobody thought he could be this, or anything close to this? He was in no way a hyped prospect. The Royals were clearly quite high on him, but to the prospect-y guys that was only so much team hype for it's own guy.
(Chris from between the keyboard and the chair)
Some guys you just need to spend more time watching in order to get it. Some players dont do it day after day, game after game, so you only catch flashes and sometimes [we] write those flashes off as just flashes, rather than previews of fire. Orgs know their talent, and it was clear that the Royals were aware of what they had in Perez early on. (Jason Parks)
2012-08-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you impressed with the seasons of Salvador Perez and Dayan Viciedo thus far? Is there a chance Salvador Perez keeps slugging over .500 in the future? Could Dayan Viciedo's average creep up into the 270s or 280s range in seasons to come? Who do you like more?
(Mike from CT)
I like Perez more. He's a guy that continues to prove me wrong. His bat is better than I thought it would be, and every time I think I have his offensive potential pegged, he shows me another aspect that I had previously discounted. Hell of a player. (Jason Parks)
2012-06-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of production do you see Salvador Perez making? Is he a future all star?
(BlueJaysFan from Toronto)
I don't think All-Star, no. (Sam Miller)
2012-03-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on the A. Escobar extension? Probably not much risk involved but seems unnecessary. Are they really going to save much on this opposed to going the arbitration route?
(Nick from NJ)
It's an okay move. The sum isn't large enough to prevent the Royals from doing other things. Is this false hustle or a sign of confidence in his development? Hard to say. That second part is the big question. It's nice to lock guys like Escobar and Salvador Perez up, but how much are defensive-first backstops and shortstops going to make going the usual route?

Also, is Escobar ever going to hit? I'm not so sure. I'll express more thoughts in a TA to be written later. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Follow-up please on Salvador Perez: If you really believe he can be that good - and yeah, that's one hell of a player for a catcher - why did nobody ever rate him highly as a prospect? Isn't a C prospect that good a top 100 guy?
(Chris from KC)
Well, the big step in offense came in 2011, and now he's not a prospect anymore, so it's more of a timing thing than anything else. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better as a long term C - Wilin Rosario or Salvador Perez?
(Chad from Fantasyland)
In fantasyland, I'll take Rosario. (Derek Carty)
2012-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Ramon Hernandez or Salvador Perez this seaon
(Matt S. from NYC)
Hernandez. Power upside is greater, can still hit for some average too. (Derek Carty)
2012-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is keeping Salvador Perez for $5 at C worth pluging Carlos Santana in at 1B?
(jaymoff from Salem, OR)
Same as Kendrick -- you're best dealing one of them. If you only have one catcher spot, then keep Santana and let Perez go. (Derek Carty)
2011-06-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Loved your piece on catching prospects in the minors. Who does Salvador Perez compare closest to out of those profiled? Would you liken him to Bethancourt in that he is young for his league, great defensive potential, free swinger, etc? Or does Bethancourt's power potential put him in a different class?
(Matt from Fayetteville)
Thanks. Perez has potential, but his bat doesn't look so hot right now. He can stick behind the plate, as his glove/arm are solid. He's not really like Bethancourt. Perez can be a good defender. Bethancourt could be an elite defender. (Jason Parks)
