2013 Pestano is the rare sidearmer whose pitch movement charts don’t look like they obviously belong to a guy who throws from that arm angle. Once essentially a submariner, Pestano enjoyed success when he raised his arm up a bit (and he raised it slightly again this year). He generates tons of strikeouts using a 93-mph heater (which he can also sink and cut) and a hard curve. He’s below-average in terms of groundballs—rare for a side-armer—but with all the whiffs he generates, he’s more than capable of late-inning work. The one issue is an extreme platoon split, though the Indians will occasionally pull him when a lefty is up with runners on to prevent damage. He was their top choice to close had Perez missed time to start 2012, but it seems unlikely he’d succeed in such a role long-term.
2012 It's rare to see a pitcher with such an unconventional side-arm delivery rack up so many strikeouts—these types usually get by on their deception and ground balls. Pestano used to be that type of pitcher when his arm slot was lower, but when he raised it and added a four-seamer in 2010, his stuff improved and the results were tremendous. Now throwing a 93-mph fastball that's even more effective given his still-deceptive delivery, the 2011 breakout can also cut the pitch and mix in a terrific sinker and a hard, slurvy breaking ball. Pestano will be a high-leverage reliever for years to come, but don't expect him to transition into closing since his arm slot and repertoire limit his effectiveness against lefties.
2011 Righty reliever Vinny Pestano has above-average velocity and command, and he could get back to the big leagues in 2011.

2011-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)One last question and I know it may be early for this one... Any hitters or pitchers you like a breakout candidates next year?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Hm, I like the look of Jerome Williams in a small sample this year. I think Fister and McCarthy may be the real deal, though they're not exactly breakout candidates any more. I like Brian Duensing coming into this season, and still do.

Dave Robertson and Kenley Jansen are two names that will surprise no one, but they could end up in bigger roles. In that vein, Greg Holland for the Royals, Vinnie Pestano for the Indians. And in the this-guys-stuff-intrigues-me-but-his-wildness-scares-me category, plus he has a cool name: Fautino de los Santos. (Mike Fast)
