BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 The strike zone belongs to the pitcher when Paredes digs in the batter's box. He struck out nearly six times for every walk last season, with a 28.9-percent K rate that would have ranked second in the American League (behind Chris Davis) if Paredes had merited enough plate appearances to qualify. He managed hits in 26 of his first 29 games and on May 23rd was hitting .352/.383/.590 in 128 plate appearances, but he wilted to .237/.273/.328 with a strikeout for every three plate appearances after that. There's some emerging pop here—10 home runs effectively tripled his career total—but his defense isn't good enough to support a superutility rep.
2015 Oft-waived utilityman Jimmy Paredes was claimed by three different teams last offseason, then repurchased by Baltimore; he strung a good month together and played in the postseason. He hasn't spent the majority of a season in the majors because the good months don't outweigh the lean ones.
2014 Jimmy Paredes earned five call-ups to Houston in 2013 because he's a switch-hitter who can play multiple positions, but even the worst team in baseball can't permanently carry a guy with his lack of stick. What that says about the Marlins, who claimed him in November, is up to you.
2013 Without diminishing the hard, humbling work Paredes has done to improve himself, his story is the sort in which a player-development staff can take great pride. He's always going to be a bit of a hack-and-slash hitternever drawing a ton of walks and striking out more than you'd wantbut his second-half Triple-A stats showed across-the-board improvements, with 20 extra-base hits and nine walks in 170 at-bats, with only 32 strikeouts. The biggest change, though, was his move from second base to center field. While this raises the bar for offense, he wasn't making it at second. The development staff is convinced he'll become a very good defensive center fielder. He's probably already as good as many utility players, and could end up starter-quality if the hard work and coaching pay off again.
2012 Paredes entered 2011 as a more highly regarded prospect than Jose Altuve at the same position. But with Altuve's Tour De Force and Chris Johnson's struggles, Paredes was moved to third base. He made a rash of errors initially at the new position (in Double-A), but mastered it well enough that the team thought his career would be best enhanced by exposure to the major leagues. Miraculouslyone such miracle being a .383 BABIPhe held his own in Houston after posting just a .300 OBP in Corpus Christi. He's still very young, and has time to take the expected retrenchment before figuring everything out and taking strides toward becoming a decent third baseman. While stardom is far from expected, his great tools hint at some upside, and he could turn those strides forward into a running start if he remains healthy and coachable.

2015-04-29 20:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Jimmy Paredes? Rather own him or Adam Lind in a shallow re-draft? Thanks!
(Kolten from Seattle)
