2013 Although Watson continue to appear best suited for lefty-on-lefty work, the Pirates allowed him to face more right-handers than lefties last season. The results weren’t horrible. Watson uses a low-90 fastball, a mid-80s slider, and a mid-80s changeup, along with moxie and wits, to retire batters. The combination seems to be enough to fake it against the occasional right-hander, though his closed landing and to-the-side release point still make him appear to be a lefty thrasher waiting to happen.
2012 Watson’s pitching attitude is described as tough—like a bulldog—yet cunning—like a fox. The bullfox made his way to the majors in 2011 and looked like a future lefty specialist. He throws with a side-armed delivery and five of the six home runs he allowed came against righties, suggesting perhaps they get a better look at the ball. Watson also posted a better strikeout-to-walk ratio when facing same-handed batters. He goes after adversaries with a low-90s fastball, slider, and changeup.
2011 Tony Watson has both started and relieved in his professional career, but his dominance of left-handed hitters throughout his career suggests that his ultimate major-league role will be as a LOOGY.
2010 Tony Watson's season ended after five brutal starts because of a sprained elbow ligament, but his solid showing in the Arizona Fall League provides hope for a bounce back in 2010.
2009 Tony Watson is a gutsy soft tosser with a good idea of how to pitch, but weak stuff means that he'll need to prove himself over and over before getting a shot.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-04-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)6x6 Dynasty, pitching cats are: QS, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB. Which one of these relievers do you like the best (just trying to prop up ratios): Tony Watson Chris Withrow AJ Ramos Alex Torres Nick Vincent
(Tommy C from Illinois)
I really want to say Alex Torres here because I love him, but his BB will likely kill you in the ratio stat. Tony Watson would be my primary target here. (Mauricio Rubio)
